To keep my three nephews up all night?

I am having my three nephews over for a sleepover. They’re six, just turned two and five months. The eldest has slept over a few times but not the younger two.

Instead of wrestling them into bed I am planning to let them stay up as late as they like. I’ve always done this with the eldest and he loves it and usually falls asleep at about 10:30pm. I’ll obvious have the baby in his crib but I’ve got a huge corner sofa so I’m going to bring the duvets down and we can just have a slumber party downstairs.

I told my friend who has two sons and she thinks that this will impact their whole week and their schooling and routine and probably exam results and future careers.

I’m not going mad am I? This is fine for one fun evening?

I agree. My 19yo, 16yo and 11yo can all cope with late nights. Not my 9yo. Nope.

Why can't your 9yo handle a singular late night? That's odd I think.

When you have done this with him before… what tike have you dropped him back the next day?

Many, many times since he was a baby. He gets picked up late morning.

i think this thread is proof of how disjointed families are. no family connections at all and parents are rigid with routines so they can grab some free times in the evening. However, in normal loving families, its the best childhood memories hanging out with family, cousins, late nights eating sweets, watching films etc.

Yep, that's basically it. Got to be very rigid with routines so that I get guaranteed free time in the evenings. I need that for my sanity.

Ah so you have no idea how the day unfolds
makes sense

Babysitters don't need to know how the next day unfolds. That isn't their responsibility.

Of course he goes home to his parents. He isn’t coming to live with me permanently.

Sweet Jesus

you said that he has never ever shown signs of being overtired the next day.

You see him until late morning the following day. So you can’t say that definitively at all

Whereas my 7 year old can cope with a late night, and always has been able to. He just sleeps later the next morning. Funny how they’re all so different, isn’t it?

Literally doesn't matter though. If parents aren't happy they can choose not to ask again. Not all kids lose their minds after a late bedtime anyway - my 3 are always fine.
Parents of 3 little boys can't afford to be picky with babysitting.

Whenisitsummer · 27/09/2026 15:40

Sounds like fun.
When they fall asleep, you can carry them to bed.
Thats what I used to do with mine on movie nights etc.
Rigid routines were for nursery/ school nights, not weekends, sleepovers and holidays.

You are missing my point

The Op is dogmatic that no impact whatsoever

my point is… she’s only with the child until 11am the following day so she can’t possibly say that definitively

OP never said there is categorically "no impact whatsoever". She said he has never been overtired from what she has seen. Which is entirely believable. It's one late night, she isn't waterboarding him.

She could ask her sister? Sounds like they have a nice, close relationship, so I imagine her sister would tell her if anything she was doing was causing her huge trouble the next day.

I thought my friend was insane and that no one else could think the same way. But lo and behold!

You have since admitted though that you exaggerated and your friend didn’t way what you made out in the OP

Which implies, correctly, that there was never anything to recover from. Again, it is one late bedtime. She's not chopping his legs off.

Goodness you ate one for hyperbole 😆

no one is talking about chopping anyone’s leg off

but my point is - the Op really can’t be confident that the child doesn’t spiral as the day goes on if she waves him off at 11am the next day 🤷‍♀️

Roosthename · 27/09/2026 15:59

6, 2 and four months. I look after them often.

how often? Unusual for parents to hand over a new born plus toddler and 6 year old on a regular basis

If someone has looked after my three very young children overnight so I could go out no WAY am I making them feel like shite by telling them the afternoon was awful with overtired tantrumns
