Would I be unreasonable for feeling guilty for losing my friend’s late husband’s sandwich box?

My friend messaged me asking if I had a Tupperware box she gave me about a year ago with some cake in. I honestly don't know. I can't find it anywhere. I couldn't even remember it.

She then messaged saying it was battered but it's her late husband's sandwich box or she wouldn't be bothered. So now I'm thinking I thought it was one of mine that's past it's sellby date and I threw it out.

I feel dreadful. What should I say to her?

You say truthfully that you have checked and you don't have it, is she sure it was you she gave it to?

And then silently you wonder why would she use it to hand out bits of cake if it meant that much to her in the first place?

It can’t have ment that much to her if she’s waited a year to ask for it.

all you can do is fess up and apologise.

It’s a delicate situation, but as you had no idea it had such major sentimental value, it’s hardly surprising that you didn’t know that a battered old Tupperware your friend gave you cake in any way needed to be carefully preserved.

Well yes!

You have to just tell her that you've looked, can't find it, and don't even remember for certain if you ever had it (so she can check with other people). Nothing else you can do, really. It's a shame, but she shouldn't have been handing it out to other people if it was important to her—or at least she should have asked for it back sooner than a year later.

Be honest. It was a long time ago you could t be sure but yes you may have chucked it out as you had no idea it was of sentimental value and you are very sorry.
