To wonder why it takes my mum so long to type?

If I text my mum on WhatsApp, it’ll tell me that she’s typing a response. Five minutes later, she’s still typing the response. Then the message comes through and it’s “Yes”.

AIBU to wonder why it takes so long to type a single word text? Is she unique in this respect?

Does she type with just one finger or both thumbs? I find people over 60 usually use one index finger only.

Ha. I'm 57 and DS tells me I can pass for much younger until I get out my phone, put my readers on and peck away at it with one finger, then it's game over. Have tried to master the two thumb technique in vain. I'm very fast though.

I use my index finger too. My teen sons mock me for it! They can multitask and text one-handed using their thumb, they didn’t believe I couldn’t do that until I showed them my hand is physically too small 😆

I touch type easily but my fingers are too fat & I struggle to hit any correct keys on a phone keyboard, lol. Makes typing even a simple text a 'mare. Alternative is whatsApp web (desktop) which is SO MUCH easier to use if U touchtype.

If you start replying on WA, but stop to do something else it will show as still typing if the thread is still open. Your mum might just faff with something else mid message.....like I sometimes do 🙈

I'm not over 60 and I use one finger but i type really quickly. I don't understand how people type with two hands and not make mistakes!

Edited for a mistake!

I can't stand texting , I start off trying to write a normal reply then get fed up scrub it and make it as short as possible. My phone isn't a smartphone either no predictive text and sometimes it takes a minute or so to send

Same

You know when you were a baby and your mum thought about your future - excited for your first steps, your first day at school, your wedding day etc?

And then she thought about all the possible worries - late nights/wrong crowd/drugs.

And all the ways she might screw things up - too hard on you/make you eat your greens/tell you to turn your music down.

Never ever did she imagine the bouncy dots on a Whatsapp message (a what now?!!l) would be the thing to grind your gears! Give her some time.

My BF sometimes seems to be typing for a long time. I think it's because he starts and gets distracted.

E.g. if he's written something but not hit send, it still shows as typing?

CrushingOnRubies · 22/09/2026 14:07

My dm does this too. The grey typing dots lasting 5 mins for a simple message. But also she needs full concentration to type you can’t talk to her whilst she’s sending a message to someone. However her punctuation and grammar on messages is perfect

That's me.

There’s an old saying, “I’m all thumbs” (meaning you’re clumsy) but it now applies to an entire generation.
