AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling?

bagpuss90 · 10/09/2026 08:52

I get that we have been advised to stock up on essentials, though I think it will encourage panic buying. I will probably get a few days worth of stuff at some point . My friend however has, at least in my opinion gone ott about it. She’s stocking up a six month supply of food. She’s bought head torches, a camping gas stove and various other stuff. She thinks I’m being naive …Am I missing something here ?

Is she going camping or something?! What are you stockpiling for?

Really? 400plus posts? Newspapers? Radio? TV? Social media? Other threads?
Tell me where you live - on the moon?
You have no knowledge of why people are discussing prepping?
Are you real? 😂

The reasons discussed extensively in this thread.

I read page 1 without more information being given and could not be bothered with the other 15.

Why should anyone do your labour for you?

Stop being lazy if you want to know the answer

After page 1 gave nothing away I gave up. I rarely watch the news, no TV licence so nothing live on the TV and haven't heard anything on radio 4 news. My social media feed hasn't picked up the reasons either. But thanks for your reply. 🙄

Well your choice to make the effort to inform yourself. Or not.
Incidentally you're not the first to ask this question on the thread and it's been answered a number of times. Maybe people patiently giving the same answers over and over again are, I dunno, a tad fed up with people who just can't be bothered to inform themselves?

FindingMeno · 13/09/2026 09:37

@Happyasapiginmuck1very briefly it's govt advice to stock for a few days to prepare for power cuts, water being cut off, supply issues, floods etc in case they happen. Its to increase the UK's resilience with factors such as el nino, conflicts, and problems with supply routes.
No big deal, just a few days tinned food, water etc.

Much easier having someone else do the job for you. Lazy.

FindingMeno · 13/09/2026 10:06

I understand some people don't follow the news, because it's so doom laden and anxiety provoking.
However, I find knowing what is going on, at least to a superficial level, is empowering.
I don't trust any government or their motivations and hidden agendas, so knowing the most likely scenarios you can insure against gives peace of mind.
I'm also under no illusions that there is little point preparing for a catastrophic event ( nukes, bio war etc) unless you are extremely well placed, rich, and physically fit.

This is a catch up campaign, we are WAY behind our European counterparts in being prepared for an emergency, whatever that emergency may be. And of course emergencies happen. Not a new thing!

Our government quite rightly is trying to catch up. I’ve followed the advice for at least 72 hours supplies for many years. It’s just sensible.

Got to wonder why the media are trying to scare us all the time. It’s becoming tedious.

Just go to gov.uk the guidance is there.

Actually the opposite is true. There’s been very little about the Houthis having effectively cut off the Saudi oil lines. It’s disastrous. The oil and fertilisers that were filtering through are no longer coming through. The upshot is likely to be serious food shortages and a shortage of power in Europe/uk in particular.

Nowhere in the UK is rural enough that you are unreachable. You will be outnumbered enormously.

Didn’t say I was unreachable did I? But the numerous towns and city’s in between would be hit hardest first. And yes there are very very rural places in the uk.

Saudi Arabia will run out of oil reserves for export in 5 to 7 days if operations at the key East-West Pipeline do not resume. Source Reuters

Thats up to 4% of global supply. Or 8% of US crude oil supplies.

The refinery on the red sea has now been hit.

Serious question
Do you really think theres enough wildlife in the U.K. that we could live from hunting?

The U.K. hasn’t been independent food wise since the mid 19th century.
There’s no way we could all just go hunting.
Actually I suspect we’d struggle even if a minority was.
i think you’d get more chance with having hens tbh. (For the eggs btw)

We wouldn’t all just go hunting because the people who lack preps and skills to stay alive would die first. Then the next to go would be people who have gotten poorly and there aren’t any hospitals or supplies to keep them alive.

Hmmm

Sources within Saudi Arabia are now telling us that the damages to the East-West pipeline will take more than a month to repair due to a lack of spare parts and deeply impacted supply chains

Minor damages to the pipe itself have already been repaired, but catastrophic damage to pumping infrastructure will unfortunately take longer to resolve

Sources say that some points where repairs occurred were then hit again, depleting spares

Oh.

Btw.
It's really, really bad news if you are in Ireland given how much it imports and how so many properties still are oil fuelled.

For those at the back still not paying attention:
https://x.com/capitolhunters/status/2099310894828126563

Anyone thinking, what's the big deal about the 4% cut in global oil production next week: that's the scale of the 1973 OPEC crisis and 1979 Iran war oil crisis. Each followed by a major recession. Prices & supply are global. Global oil stocks are already gone. It's a calamity. 1/

People seem bizarrely blase about this. Did we forget bad things can happen to us? 4% production loss is a global recession-producing event. Spiking prices will benefit Russia. Trump will use it to demand Ukraine surrender. What am I missing here? 2/

"This is one of the most severe energy supply situations in modern history." None of us will be untouched by this. 3/

Oil & gas folks are claiming Saudi Arabia is working 24-7 and no-expense-spared and can maybe get oil flowing again in a week. But the Saudis seem to have no defense against the drone attacks that took the pipeline out. This all seems very, very dark. 4/

As I have been saying on several threads now, this isn't a drill. There is due cause to be concerned and events mean it is sensible to follow the government advice.

I have been watching all weekend and think our chances of fuel rationing and potentially rolling blackouts this winter are probably fairly likely.

The impact on farming - inability to get fertiliser - also means food prices are going to go up, perhaps significantly. In some places in the world famine is likely. That's not the UK, but it is going to get difficult.

Each day the news gets worse. I will be watching the markets today - with the AI news combined with the oil news over the weekend, I'm expecting some significant tanking to go on. That's pensions being flushed down the drain. Interest rates are unlikely to stay out - they are going to go up. Possibly significantly.

Start taking this seriously. It's going to be a tough winter. This has been crystallising over the weekend into a situation which is tangible rather than merely theoretical. It looks likely to be hard to avoid this. It's fucking terrifying tbh. I have seen comments ranging from significant recession bigger than 2008 to 1929 style crash triggering a depression. That seems to be where we are headed.

Burnham has a perfect storm on his hands. He will just be trying to keep the lights on and make sure everyone gets basic food at this rate. Beyond that no promises. A lot of people are going to be in a lot of financial difficulty if this shapes up the way it's looking.

I really really hope I'm wrong.

I can see there being a problem incoming with the oil taking this route soon.
