AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

Yanbu tbh

Theres this tiktokker who i love and think is amazing, but she refuses to have a toilet brush! I'm like, what if someone (usually a man) has no choice but to poop in your toilet and finds he cant clean it?! 😩😩😩

Im with her, toilet brushes are grim. I use one of toilet duck flushable things

IMO air freshener is only needed in dirty houses. In a clean house if someone does an unusually smelly poo all that is needed is an extra flush or two to clear the air.

People who think air fresheners deal with the smell are delusional. As many others have pointed out, their use creates a synthetic floral/shit smell which is worse than just a shit smell.

Here’s the thing about opening the window- if you know you’re going to have a shit, you open the window first. I find this incredibly efficient- the smell doesn’t get a chance to permeate the room in the first place- it’s straight out of the window. By the time I’ve flushed, and then washed and dried my hands, any smell has gone.

You are somewhat wrong. Febreze - unlike other air fresheners- can actually bind the molecules and reduce the actual odour. They had to add fragrances to their sprays because of marketing (as people didn’t feel the need to use pure odour eliminator).

CeciliaMars · Today 17:23

We always have one! It’s mortifying when you make a smell and have nothing to mask it with!

Notellinganyone · Today 17:33

I hate artificial air fresheners. I do t mind a really natural diffuser but I think this is a weird expectation.

Carry a box of matches with you. Brilliant for neutralising any nasty nifs.

I came here to say this!
Cheaper, more environmentally friendly and it really works.

I used to think that after a bad one that if I turned on the light in the toilet there would be an explosion

Elsvieta · Today 18:12

No, it's never occurred to me to have one of those gross-smelling things in my house for the sake of guests, any more than it would occur to me to decorate the bathroom in a style I don't like for the sake of guests. If others want weird synthetic chemical smells in their houses that's up to them, but it's not for me. Guests are entitled to a bathroom door that locks, a loo that flushes, hand soap, loo roll and a towel; that's all.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. I won’t be buying it either way though. Opening the window doesn’t cost anything and is environmentally friendly.

Viviennemary · Today 18:14

No I wouldn't expect one. But a bathroom fan is a good idea for anybody thinking of a new bathroom.

Bluedenimdoglover · Today 18:15

Far worse things to worry about. If you're that worried, take your own

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

Well 94% have voted against you so yeah YABU.

RotatingPenguin · Today 18:24

What an odd thing to expect. We used to keep a box of matches on the bathroom windowsill in our old house. We don't have a windowsill in this house but there is an opening window which we use when necessary.

Elsvieta · Today 19:07

Off topic, but do people often shit in other people's loos? If so, I envy you. I have shy bowels. I physically cannot poo anywhere but my own loo; even if I really need to go, it just refuses to come out. It makes for some very uncomfortable workdays if I don't manage my morning poo.

How do you cope on holiday?

EmeraldsAndPearls · Today 19:24

I keep PooPourri, VIPoo or the supermarket alternative sprays on the back of each toilet for guests - or for people who live in the house when guests are round.

Matches work as someone else said but I wouldn't like to wave one about in someone else's bathroom, imagine setting fire to their shower curtain and having to explain that 😂

Wickedwhiskers · Today 19:26

But then the place still smells of poo 💩 along with some horrible synthetic florals

Catpuss66 · Today 19:58

No nasty synthetic smells. The thing that bugs me are rim cleaners in florescent colours, why can they not make plain white ones with nice smell. I do have poo drops that smell of rose not too synthetic.

How do you cope on holiday?

Badly and painfully usually, at least for the first couple of days, then the toilet starts feeling like mine, and I can use it (either that or the Senna I start munching on on day one takes control of the situation).

Thegirlwhowent · Today 04:43

How do you clean the loo without a brush?

I put loo cleaner in it and leave it for four hours.

Gqqkkq · Today 20:23

Spray air freshener is absolute filth. I hate it, it gives me a headache. It’s literally poison. If there is a smell of shit, open the window. The end.

BooBooDoodle · Today 21:22

This is weird. I don’t have an air freshener in our bathroom. The windows are almost constantly open anyway. Nothing worse than air freshener and shit smells combined. It’s rank. You can still tell someone has been in for a shit even when you spray to mask it. Just have a shit, if there’s a toilet in there you’re going to be doing one or both of the two options you’d use a toilet for. Own the fact you’ve had a dump or do them in the comfort of your own home so you can have fun afterwards with your spray. Everyone shits, don’t know why there is so much fuss surrounding it. Your shit smells just as much as everyone else’s.
