Why are people so sanctimonious about people watching TV on holiday

Why is it wrong if, on my holiday, I want to watch TV?

I see it all the time- if some posts (here, Facebook, other SM) that they are disappointed that the TV doesn't work- then there are posts after posts saying 'you can watch TV at home' 'how can you watch TV in insert beautiful location

I am currently on a UK break and the TV doesn't work- the host has said there is loads to do elsewhere.

But it is my holiday, I don't see why people accept it is ok to lie on a Sunday lounger for a week, but don't think I should have my own escape.

I don't want to read, I just want to catch up on some series in peace and quiet, is that too much to ask?

How weird, I go on holiday, spend thousands, go scuba diving and exploring, swimming, sunbathing, beaches. we go out for dinner every night

when we get back we’ll have a glass of wine (cos we can’t drink and drive back from the restaurant) then watch a bit of telly. We also sometimes play card games and read.

But they've probably been out for 8 hours enjoying their environment. Maybe they were up and out well before you and wondered if you were wasting your morning having a lie in.

I would be mentioning the fact it doesn’t work and the owner’s response in my feedback.

You can sleep in a bed at home too, are you against paying to do that elsewhere? Or are you just pretending not to understand people can do more than one activity in a day?

My last holiday we did 30k+ steps every day, and still found time to curl up in front of a film.

Why do you need others to approve of your choices?

People never say 'Why spend your holiday reading? You can read at home!'
Or 'drinking cocktails on the beach? Why bother, you can get a spicy marg in a can from home bargains for 99p!'

On the scale of intellectual superiority, watching a good documentary is actually probably more intellectually stimulating than reading chick lit. Not that anyone needs to justify their entertainment choices, of course!

For most people, variety is the spice of life, and it's perfectly possible to enjoy both holidays spent trekking across the alps in the company of local shepherds feeding you hand crafted cheese milked from their own goats AND chilling on the beach with a drink in hand and trying to make sense out of a spanish soap opera during siesta time back at the hotel. Besides which, who cares, if someone else's idea of a great holiday doesn't match yours, you don't have to go on it!

We run around like headless chickens all day and then crash in front of a purposefully chosen crappy film so we can laugh at it together and if chat happens (we have teens) we're not missing anything epic. We're almost never all home together for long enough in the evenings to do that otherwise. Do you OP.

I edit and sort photos on my laptop when I get home, using a bit of Photoshop as and when required.

Yep, a Greek soap opera, a packet of Oregano Lays and a wee bottle of Mythos. Living the dream.

Yes I always see this when people ask about WiFi. Same thing with the kids don't need to be on screens on holiday.
We often have busy days so by the evening we want to stay in. If we know the WiFi is good we will take the fire stick with us.
On a caravan holiday my kids don't want to watch the entertainment these days so unless we spend a fortune in the arcades then we want to be in the caravan relaxing.

It's not all or nothing though is it? You can spend the day doing all sorts of things when you're on holiday and then watch a film or whatever in the evening.

Do what you want on your own holiday but if you're going to go on holiday to a beautiful area in the u k and watch t v you could have done that at home. It's a lot of money to pay to do exactly what you could do in your own home

I don't really understand why so many people don't get that watching TV for a small part of your day or evening on holiday doesn't equate to doing exactly what you'd do at home.

I like busy days on holiday, and then quiet evenings. After dinner, my ideal is to wind down watching a film or something in bed. I don't actually watch films in bed at home as I don't have a TV in the bedroom.

I love to have a couple of box sets downloaded onto my tablet and am perfectly happy to have some downtime relaxing on my balcony or on my bed to a couple of episodes. That's usually after a full day having done 'holiday things' so unwinding can be really nice.

Has it not occurred to you that people might spend all day exploring beautiful places then might want to chill in front of the TV after their evening meal? It gets dark much earlier now. What beautiful places are there to see at 7.30 at this time of year when it is getting dark?

Why would you assume that they would spend all day watching TV. What a daft assumption to make.

Plenty of people can find something else to do with their evenings other than watch TV. Even in the dark and even at home.

It's your holiday and your break from the norm, how you spend it is entirely up to you and I hope you enjoy every minute. Its just me and husband mostly now, so we usually get up early and go for a loooooooong hike or visit an attraction, have a big late lunch then go home and crash in front of TV with a cup of tea and local goodies to undo all the healthy walking. When the kids were younger and we had grans and grandads in attendance we did board games, puzzles etc but those "holidays" weren't really holidays for any of the grown ups!

I have watched an hour of "worthy" TV tonight. I have also done other things, but you make it sound like it is a crime to enjoy watching TV. I am now going to log off and read my book.

Why does it bother you that other people like to watch TV?

I would be asking host to replace tv (if you are in rented holiday let) and not a friends

But thats for a few hours a day on holiday. Should I drive or fly back for the evening to watch the telly when on holiday

What about reading on holiday, I could do that at home

Or sort photos if Im so inclined?

We went to London a few weeks back, 4 nights and zoned out on the bed watching TV each night, we were shattered from all the walking and seeing attractions each day. So after dinner it was pj's and TV till we fell asleep (not long)
Were in Spain next month and it'll be the same, we are up early and are out and about and on the go all day, I'll take a book but I know there will be TV involved at night.
Do whatever you want to relax and ignore any judgey pants thinking they are better than you because they read and don't do TV, or manage to be out and about till all hours.

If a tv is included in the hotel listing of amenities I would except it to be working.
