Why are people so sanctimonious about people watching TV on holiday

Why is it wrong if, on my holiday, I want to watch TV?

I see it all the time- if some posts (here, Facebook, other SM) that they are disappointed that the TV doesn't work- then there are posts after posts saying 'you can watch TV at home' 'how can you watch TV in insert beautiful location

I am currently on a UK break and the TV doesn't work- the host has said there is loads to do elsewhere.

But it is my holiday, I don't see why people accept it is ok to lie on a Sunday lounger for a week, but don't think I should have my own escape.

I don't want to read, I just want to catch up on some series in peace and quiet, is that too much to ask?

I don't tend to watch TV on holiday, but that's because we watch quite a bit at home (no kids so not the same loads of chores to do after work). It's more of a novelty for us to go out in the evenings or sit on a balcony nattering. At home we come home from work, catch up on each other's day, then after making tea, cooking and washing up, TV goes on and that's us for the night.
On holiday, we haven't worked, we haven't had to get up at dodgy o'clock so we have got a bit more energy in the evenings.
I totally get why people who don't get chance to watch much at home do it on holiday. It's your novelty.

Forget what other people like to do, what is the owner/manager going to do about the broken TV?

The host needs to buy a new one and compensate you. You like TV, you've rented a place with a TV, you should expect a working TV.

Social Media is full of fake bullshit, I wouldn't even listen to what people say about others, it is more of a measure of their narrow way of thinking and their judgmental personality IMO. I wouldn't like to sit around a pool all day, but I wouldn't make that comment to others like I'm some authority on what a holiday should be. The words "each to their own" couldn't be more applicable here.

Is the host going to replace the TV?

Different forms of relaxation don't bewilder me. I personally love a lazy day with a box set. I've actually got a weekend of just that coming up after a very long couple of months doing a renovation and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to Friday evening when I clock off.

What bewilders me is spending lots of money to do that in a different location when I could do it at home for free.

I couldn't, for example, climb mountains or go to beaches etc at home for free.

We have just had a UK break and just read in the evenings after eating. I did watch Black Sands on my Kindle in the evenings, but the TV in the room wasn't switched on.

Once we have eaten all DH wants to do is sit and read, play solitaire or watch TV. His health issues mean that he can't really walk a lot after eating. Neither of us like to continue drinking once we have eaten.

I don't understand why some people get so morally superior about watching TV. It is something I enjoy. I love a good thriller or crime drama. I also read and do other activities but also have time to watch programmes I enjoy.

You should be allowed to partake in any activity you deem pleasurable on your holiday OP, ignore the naysayers!

I love watching tv on holiday.
I spent 3 months at our place in Spain in spring.
Once I had walked the dog, back to the flat for breakfast etc.
I pretty much finished watching The Resident. It was pure shite but I don't regret it.
I also viewed a lot of Spanish telly.
The soaps are simple, but relationships are bewildering

Of course. I’m not going to stare at the wall. I always download a few shows before I go. I never sleep well on holidays. I love sitting on the balcony early in the morning with my headphones when the family are sleeping.

Probably because you can watch TV at home so why pay to watch TV elsewhere?

a) You can also read a book or play cards or drink a glass of wine or go swimming or eat an ice cream at home, but nobody has a problem with people doing those things on holiday.

b) People clearly aren't spending every minute of their holiday just sitting indoors watching telly. They're watching it while they relax before/after dinner in the evening, or while they're sitting on the balcony with a drink for a couple of hours, or on their phone/tablet while they chill by the pool, or after they've put the kids to bed and have a bit of time to fill by themselves. Just like they might read a book on the beach, or do a crossword puzzle while they drink their morning coffee on the balcony.

They're not 'paying to watch TV elsewhere'. They're paying for a holiday and watching a bit of TV in their downtime, that's all.

Go out. Night markets, live music, restaurants. Or if in accomodation then read or sort photos etc

We watch movies in the evening on holiday with a fun dinner whilst the kids sleep and the kids watch tv in the morning when they get up ungodly early and I don’t want to get out of bed yet lol

OP, I’d be pissed off too! And I’d be even more pissed off at the hosts blase attitude about it. I’d insist they fix it or give you a discount as one of the facilities isn’t working.

I actually probably watch more TV when on holiday because I often travel solo, so don't fancy going out and sitting in bars alone all night. Whereas at home I'm doing stuff with friends/dp etc.

I always find it really stupid when people seem to think that just because you mention watching tv on holiday they somehow interpret it as ALL you do on holiday. Most people don't want to/can't spend every waking minute sightseeing, there's nothing wrong with taking an hour to chill at lunchtime or in the evening.

I agree. There is always so much hyperbole about TV watching, and so many posters post about never watching TV in a morally superior way. I bet they watch stuff on other screens though.

I choose to watch specific programmes that I enjoy rather than general TV. I don't usually watch it on holiday, but that isn't me being sanctimonious. I do lot more reading on holiday. I do read at home as well.

I love watching a bit of telly on holiday lying in bed in the evenings. I don't have live TV at home and I don't have any screens in my bedroom so it's all a bit of a novelty for me when I'm away.

I really hate it when hotels lock down the TV so much that you can't turn on the subtitles - I get all excited about my little treat only to find I can't use it at all.

I do find it a bit frustrating that you can’t say, factually, ‘I don’t watch TV’ without being accused of thinking you’re ’morally superior’. My lack of TV watching has nothing to do with my morals 😂, it’s just never been something I’ve been particularly bothered about. I do occasionally watch something, for example if we’re staying with the in laws, but even as a child I wasn’t really fussed by it. Trust me I don’t think I’m superior to anyone, morally or otherwise!

Same SlugJam. I just don’t like the sound of TV. Last show I watched was Friends, back then… I’ve never owned a telly. Other people I’ve lived with, including DH, have one. I’ve never had a conversation about a TV programme but that’s not me being better. I read plenty of trashy novels & magazines!

We sometimes do it a bit in the evening or first thing in the morning sometimes too. Don’t see an issue with it whatsoever.

I think the issue is you could take the week off and sit and watch tv on your sofa, it would be cheaper. Howver if doing it in a different venue is worth fhe money, then fair enough,

Exactly. During the day on holiday I'm usually doing mountainy/outdoorsy stuff. So once I've done that, sorted the kit out afterwards, maybe sorted stuff out for the next day, got dinner made etc, too bloody right I want to veg on the sofa and watch a bit of telly and I'd be very pissed off if the host didn't give a monkey's that it didn't work. Doubtless there are MNers who would instead go back out for four solid hours of heavy culture or would get stuck into a bit of Proust or Tolstoy, but they're better than me.
