AIBU to want spending cuts rather than more tax rises?

The foundations are being laid for more tax rises in the October Budget.

AIBU to ask for savings in spending to help balance the budget rather than more taxes.

With welfare spending at nearly £1bn each day, when is enough, enough?

What IS disrespectful is treating the NHS like a sacred cow that can't be criticised.

My DH has had cancer for 8 years. His "treatment" has been utterly woeful, with repeated foul ups, incompetency, etc. He's just had to spend 2 weeks in hospital after a major operation to pin his leg after some of his cancer "treatment" has wrecked his bones - he should have been on it for 2 years but was actually on it for 8 sodding years! His haematologist well and truly screwed up. We've since googled it and 2 years is the maximum. The orthopaedic surgeon couldn't believe he'd been on it 8 years and wasn't surprised his bones are screwed. He needs to go in again for another 2 weeks for another major operation on his other leg. That's a lot of wasted NHS resources for an entirely unnecessary cock up. In the months leading up to his operation, it was cock up after cock up re the admin and management of preparing for the surgery, - even in the same hospital, different depts won't talk to eachother meaning wasted appointments, duplicated tests etc. In the ward itself, it was a fiasco, the physios spent more time telling him how they had no time to show him exercises etc than it would have taken to just do it. When it came to discharge, another foul up. Doctor said 3/4 days time once he could get himself out of bed with a zimmer. Then, literally less than an hour later, the "discharge manager" came to tell him he was being discharged - nothing had been put in place, no drugs prescribed, not enough physio, no transport, etc - ended up 48 hours spent in a discharge lounge on a hard chair whilst we had to chase everyone up to get things in place. No I tell a lie, not 48 hours in the discharge lounge because it closed at 8pm so he was moved over to sit in A&E overnight as there was no one else for him (and others stuck in the discharge lounge) to wait. Then they wonder why A&E is always full - it's because it's dumped on by other depts of the NHS!

If he hasn't been on the medication what would the likely prognosis for his cancer have been? Many people are on many medications longer than is safe because it's that or the original disease runs rampant and they die.

30 something and living in Islington, or equivalent, by any chance?

What a bizarre assumption @Pluto46why would you think that?

The rich pay enough. Large businesses pay enough. Most of the tax gap is illegal avoidance and it's done by mostly small self employed traders and SMEs

Is it though?...would love to know the true difference between illegal evasion and benefit fraud/questionable claims

Do they not get the chance to work or get benefits? It shouldn't be a competition who has it worse. Some pensioners struggled when young, we did it's not all been as easy as young people think.

You seem confused. Younger generations are having to live on less. Thats a fact. It’s not a generational competition & it doesn’t mean all pensioners are rich.

lazyarse123 · Today 15:40

Goota · Today 14:39

I mean surely that's on you for not saving up privately for retirement?

I think people should get something for what they "contributed" via NI. But we need to move on to people saving up for their own retirement.

Shall I go back in time and tell my dh not to get ill and unable to claim benefits so that I had to get 4 part time jobs with 3 teens to pay for? Where exactly was i getting the money to save?
This is what I mean when everyone is generalising. Sometimes shit happens and we deal with it the best way we can. We've never lived on benefits so at least I can't be blamed for that.

PinkFruitbat · Today 15:41

Manhattanman · Today 14:07

I think the problem is that we could all pay much more tax but have no faith that this would translate into improved services instead of disappearing into the massive black hole of debt interest repayment and welfare spending, so anyone fortunate/daft enough to be a nett contributor to the exchequer would be worse off but would see no tangible benefit whatsoever - not only for themselves but for anybody they know. We could double the tax rates and eliminate the tax free allowance but does anyone really think that would equate to A & E waiting times drastically falling, GP appointments being abundant, spotless streets and that everyone who needed it had adequate social care? Not a chance, and that is why there is understandable resistance to tax rises from those that pay them.

By 28/29 over 60% of all households will be net receivers. The reality is that high earners keep the show on the road. Not very ‘fair’ is it?

Slash the quangos! They currently cost the taxpayer over £300 billion a year !!!

You can pretty much only move forward. Ik Labour have used blame everyone else for two years but Starmer was ousted over it.

The next party will probably have to stop relying on tax rises and borrowing hikes.

Tax rises are inevitable regardless of who it power. What are people missing?

Whammyammy · Today 15:42

Taxes taxes taxes...then give the money away. Thanks labour

’What are people missing?’

That taxes are already high and there’s damaging effects from more on top.

lippylip · Today 15:44

@PinkFruitbat but when a country has an older population it’s inevitably that the amount of net receiver households increase. Most people are only net contributors for a small part of their lives.

Need to expand it to the severely obese too who are also a massive drain on the NHS and wider country. I've been visiting my DH in hospital daily for a couple of weeks and appalled at all the severely obese people - it's a rarity to see a normal sized person.

Blaming individuals is not a good way to go. Schools sold off playing fields. Schools do not do enough swimming for long enough. Fast food outlets have exploded in number from since I was a child. School dinners have deteriorated.
Cook chill offerings that are mainstream are full of fat, sugar and salt.
People have been given differing dietary advice over the decades. Nobody knows what to believe. Fat is bad. Fill up on carbs. No, carbs are sinful. No, sugar is the problem. Eat butter again.
And then there are the organisations that should know better. James Martin tried to get a hospital to cook from scratch. Nutritionally better. It was cheaper too. In a hospital. The patients preferred it.
No sooner had he left they went back to paying more for heat up food that was not cooked on the premises. Disgraceful.
It is not always the individuals fault. How many times do you read on medicines ‘may gain weight’. My consultant got miffed when I pointed out that a new medication I was on had put two stone on me. Apparently I should be grateful it was not five ! With that outlook a less assertive individual would have I suspect remained on the tablets and indeed put on five stone.

OP lost me pages back whining about paying tax which goes on lazy workshy. Clearly she knows every single one of these and knows their circumstances…..or could she just be so thick that she can only generalise. Stupid 🙄. Still….in good company with the rubbish she reads in the right wing press. …and is daft enough to believe.

lippylip · Today 15:46

@EasternStandard what about my posts makes you think I don’t understand the impact of tax hikes. I already said we are in a doom loop….

You are just blithering on about labour and can’t even acknowledge that the Tories raised taxes, pointless 😆

SulkingInTheCatio · Today 15:47

We need spending cuts in the right places. so not decimating the nhs, underfunding education, etc. but welfare cuts. Absolutely. Hopefully by looking at intelligent ways of saving money such as a previous poster mentioned building more council, houses will save on UC payments.

Fizzink38 · Today 15:48

PinkFruitbat · Today 15:14

yes there are plenty who game the system. Time to hack it right back.

There are plenty of jobs you can do if you are deaf BTW.

Thank you for your care and concern.
Possibly you missed the bit about the brain tumour.
But hey, why worry about empathy and compassion, right?
'Are there no prisons, are there no workhouses?'
So long as you can impoverish people you think are beneath you; the vulnerable, the sick, the mentally ill, the refugees, the elderly - what an interesting society you want to live in. Reminds me of something...

Would that be the same daftness from Guardian readers believing left wing utopia exists? They also love to generalise about people they don't agree with. Do YOU know every single one of those right wingers you criticise?

All those other cuts combined wouldn't fund the pip in person reviews you want

Do you care about the number of children you're plunging into poverty with this plan?

Do you care about the adults you're plunging into poverty and the vulnerable people you're leaving to die?

Yes in person PIP reviews would cost money to administer. But will likely recover a good portion weeding out all the fakers who claim it.

There is no child poverty in the UK.

If you are fit and able to work, but choose not to and milk benefits; then yes you need a kick up the arse into work. Community service, care for the elderly, British Army. Plenty of work out there….

If you want to pay less tax OP, you can how about put more into your pension? Or donate some to charity. You sound like a deeply unpleasant person tbh. The comment to the poster with a brain tumour was vile.

I simply replied to your post asking what taxes the Tories cut & have said that both parties have contributed to where we are now.

If you think that is blithering on about the Tories & the past then I suggest you work on your comprehension. Good luck! 😆

Sure. So what’s the issue? The next party will have to cut instead.

The problem you have seems to be that you are entirely uneducated yourself. I'd spend time arguing with you but it would be like arguing with a block of metal. Not a lot would go in. Your complete lack of understanding of economics, the people around you and the costs versus return of policing PIP in this way mena your opinion is thankfully a worthless nonsense anyway
