OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

Temptree · Yesterday 12:16

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

To pp: Regardless of why she asked about his parents skin colour (age, dementia etc) it isn’t ok. The description of her comment about his skin and follow up comment about ‘inclusion’ and all being welcome is outrageous.
Apparently she was warned on her earpiece and ended the interview asking if she offended anyone. She said told no.

You think a guest on a show has an earpiece with the gallery speaking to them? They don’t.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Today 10:38

SALaw · Today 10:34

This story makes zero sense. She was issued with an on air warning “via Andi’s earpiece”? She wouldn’t hear such a warning? Surely if anything was said via Andi’s earpiece it was to Andi and it was up to him to issue the warning to her? It doesn’t sound like he did, or that he said something about the gallery getting nervous but not really stepping in and warning her.

But it obviously shouldn't have been up to him to issue the warning!

Perhaps the producers fucked up and issued the warning via Andi's earpiece when they meant to warn Miriam directly. It certainly wasn't Andi's job to warn her!

SALaw · Today 10:39

EasternStandard · Today 10:36

He does though, in an amenable way, close it down.

I agree he moved the conversation on but that’s not the same as issuing a warning which is what the article claimed happened.

How would they go about warning her directly on a live tv broadcast? March on the set and talk to her? It’s for the presenters to deal with what arises.

wheretoyougonow · Today 10:41

I am absolutely cringing at some of the replies on here. I was going to write a lengthy response but if it has to be explained I despair.
I will say that I have never ever asked the skin colour of anyone’s parents. If you don’t understand how inappropriate that was, especially on live TV, I think it would be good to reflect on that.

Why would they have someone so uncontrollable on live tv?

Remember the backlash and fallout about the alleged comments made by Susan Hussey to Ngozi Fulani at a Buckingham Palace reception?

The only witnesses were the two involved, and yet Hussey was effectively forced into stepping back and retirement based on one person’s version of events - that may or may not have been as interpreted correctly by the the recipient - only the two of them know the real facts and what was actually meant and said.

The humiliation and obviously racist inappropriate comments made to Andi Peters were witnessed by millions on TV, but still there are many making excuses for MM and suggesting it’s just part of her edgy and “endearing” personality.

Even a spokesperson for William said the comments were unacceptable ant the time and supported Lady Susan Hussey stepping down from her role. Perhaps someone might do us all a favour and suggest MM does the same?

It’s always via the presenters isn’t it? They have to control the show.

Broud · Today 10:45

I just don’t get why people like her. Anyone can say outrageous things and force out flatulence for attention. I like women who are strong and don’t give a damn. But she’s just a massive attention seeker. Many comments could be made about her appearance but most people have the grace not to go there.

It’s just so unnecessary to draw attention to Andi’s race. He's just a man. It’s actually quite othering. Her preoccupation with race is bizarre.

Yes, that's right. They were telling him to wrap up.

KittyCatPuss · Today 10:47

JuRoo · Today 09:15

She asked if he was mixed race in a pleasant, curious manner, he said he wasn’t & she said they call his colour tone ‘high yella’ in America. He laughed & seemed interested to hear that. A normal conversation, nothing rude said, just a question. She’s just herself, genuine, likeable.

Why did ITV feel the need to zap it then, for the ITV+1 airing of the show?

There's always a "right" sort of racist for white liberals, and it's always people who share their political beliefs. That's why Justin Trudeau got away with his history of black face.

I agree but I also believer there is a type of black commentator, who can be racist and incandescent with rage if you pull them up on it.

Was Peters a presenter or another guest? For some reason, I assumed he was a guest but I don't watch the programme so perhaps he was a presenter. And yes, his responsibilities would obviously be a bit different in that scenario.

I didn’t know before but yes he’s the presenter. He’s probably taken aback personally but deals with the situation very well.

She’s like a toddler or a naughty dog. They undoubtedly asked her not to do her usual filth talk about bodily functions and sex so she thought she could find a sneaky way around it .
she’s offensive and she wants to be offensive. She’s no different to creepy men who find anyway to turn the conversation back to sex even when they know it might be intimidating or scary for the recipient of said conversation

2021x · Today 11:09

She is a pain in the arse and possibly slightly unhinged and definitely indulged in the past. Fine for GN, as he can handle her, but maybe not for This Morning any more.

Broud · Today 11:14

She was also weird with Will.I.am on the Graham Norton show by drawing attention to his race. Never does it with white people. She
hides behind this faux naive/curious act. Says it all….

its 2026. How about we treat people as individuals first. I’m half Indian. Day to day my race really doesn’t come into play. I’ve been in group settings where my background was the only one inquired about. It’s very othering and makes you feel different. If some people can’t see the issue then that’s good for them. But some od us do not appreciate this kind of behaviour. I’m happy to talk about my background but only if it’s coming from a genuine place.

Dandeliontea123 · Today 11:20

suburberphobe · Today 00:21

Haha, she always makes me laugh, as does Graham Norton.

I think it's quite o.k. to ask people if they are mixed race, I myself have one and many women and friends I know do too. They come in all shades.
You would never guess that a high-blonde with a very dark-skinned adult son were in anyway related.
Where I live there's all kinds of mixed race (adult) kids, asian, african, south american.

Mumsnetters getting their knickers in a twist.....

What the hell is a ‘high-blonde’? You sound as if you are describing lampshades not people. Reading this thread I am starting to feel that some posters would like to go back in time to 1830s New Orleans.

And MM as a Jewish person and a lesbian should be ashamed of herself for choosing to use outdated slurs to describe and question others.

Bit of a parallel with Polanski. Both Jewish and homosexual but they behave very strangely around these issues.

The little gargoyle is racist! Colour me stunned 🙄.
Mumsnetters are making excuses for her behaviour... Again, colour me stunned 😞.

Tbf your description of her rules you out as a person taking the high ground. Your description of her is far worse than how she spoke to andI P. What’s your excuse for cruel personal remarks?

I agree, some of the stuff very questionable.
