AIBU to think the new sixth form outfit looks like something from "The Handmaid'sTale"

I am surprised the school did not add a cloak and a "chastity bonnet"

It’s giving Lady Mary on her horse vibes.

HelenaWilson · 03/09/2026 16:55

It’s a polyester black skirt what don’t you understand?

Why is someone wearing a polyester black skirt more likely to smell than someone wearing polyester black trousers?

I'd have thought the skirt would be cooler.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/09/2026 18:03

Meh. Wool blend skirt, optional item, fine for anybody who wants to wear a skirt rather than trousers - something that isn't reserved purely for particular faiths, we always get uniform threads where parents state that their daughter can't possibly wear trousers because she's so tall/short/slim/leggy/curvy/has such a tiny waist /doesn't like wearing trousers/has sensitivity to fabric close against her legs /etc. Can wear long shorts underneath in summer if legs get hot, cooler than close fitting trousers, can wear leggings underneath in winter, unlikely to be grown out of and available up to size 18 and in two lengths before it's taken up for any petite girls who wish to wear it rather than trousers.

It meets all needs and wishes (except for brightening the day of men who fantasise about naughty school girls).

Uniform looks alot like Marlborough College girls sixth form. The hem gets wet and muddy in bad weather. Not a fan.

Why are they even wearing uniforms in 6th form?

Lots of private schools have uniform in 6th form - it’s very normal.

Error404FucksNotFound · 03/09/2026 18:45

I think it looks lovely. Very stylish.

The actual uniform is ‘trouser suits’. These can be bought from anywhere.
The skirt in the OP is just an alternative option for anyone who doesn’t want to wear a trouser suit.

Why not just let them wear jeans? My sons’ school is pretty strict on uniform but sixth form get treated more like adults and can wear their own clothes. It’s not like they’ll be wearing trouser suits at university and even most office dress codes are less strict nowadays!

Lots of state schools do too!

I see some of the girls from Marlbourgh College walking around the town with skirts that length.

The teachers aren't even wearing suits and they are doing an actual job!

No idea, I don’t make the rules.

I agree. We visit Marlborough often and the girls from the college look lovely in their long skirts.

Looks like a wrap over too, a bit of a breeze and she'll show her knickers and then take off.
It's rather Mary Poppins isn't it?

Mary Poppins was my first thought...

Bluedenimdoglover · 03/09/2026 20:01

As if a long skirt ever stopped a hormonal teenager from chasing boys.....

True - I had a step through bike.
Doesn't alter the fact that you can't cycle at all in a short skirt.

I can cycle in a short skirt, but it isn't in any way modest and you should wear decent big pants or thick tights 😅 wouldn't do it in a leather skirt, would definitely stretch the leather.

(obvs irrelevant to school uniform)

WutheringTights · 03/09/2026 20:37

Jesus Christ, I’ve worked in senior positions in the City for the past 10 years and I’ve never seen anyone dressed like that. What workplace do they think they’re preparing students for?

prh47bridge · 03/09/2026 21:34

For the benefit of new posters, OP identified the school in a post that has since been deleted. Her claim that this is the only sixth form uniform and that there is no trouser option is false. A trouser suit is the school's preferred option. This is the alternative uniform for those who don't want to wear trousers.

The school shop does not provide trouser suits - students are expected to purchase those elsewhere. So this is the only option available from the school shop, but it is not the only option available to students. I suspect OP has tried to purchase uniform from the school shop and has not properly digested the uniform rules.

Girasoli · 03/09/2026 21:44

When I was in secondary school it was fashionable to wear soft long black skirts (instead of knee length ones), I think we thought it made us look like tortured artists/vaguely mysterious.

I think I'd still choose the long skirt over a trouser suit if I was in that 6th form. It's the better of two bad options!

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/09/2026 22:06

This is the uniform (only worn on specific dates) to give you Handmaid's Tale vibes. The traditional uniform of The Red Maids' High School which was worn by boarders.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 03/09/2026 22:14

@WutheringTights They almost certainly don’t see it as that. They offer trouser suits. I’m not convinced 6th form should replicate office work as there are a vast number of careers that have a varied clothes policy !

Bananacrepewithnuts · 03/09/2026 22:20

Never seen anything like this before. Omg.

Looks like something from Harry Potter!

@BananacrepewithnutsThe blue jackets and long skirts are Rugby school. 6th form. The “pilot” uniforms are formal dress at Arts et Metier Grand Ecole France. That’s a university.

Most unusual. The kids look happy enough in the pics though.
