This trend (on Insta etc) for referring to inanimate objects as "she"........it is infuriating - handbags, holiday homes, bronzer......make it stop! I'm a 50 year old women and largely follow women of a similar age. It's infantile and ridiculous. AiBU?

I could hardly read that nonsense. First the author liked calling inanimate things she, then she didn't because it annoyed her once in a shop. Make your bloody mind up, dear...

Also if we were Spanish, French, Italian etc, inanimate objects still have a gender so nobody would get wound up about it - table is feminine, car is masculine, etc.

The only good thing about these gruesome SM affectations is that they generally not a case of language moving on, but a fad that will die before too long.

I don’t think I’ve heard anyone gushing about so-and-so being their spirit animal in years. Thankfully.

I was buying a hairpiece online from a small retailer. In her catalogue every hairpiece was referred to as she or her: "She's a mid-length wavy blah blah blah" "Her style will fit right in with yours". Then when I ordered my email follow ups were "She's on her way." "Not long until you can see her for yourself". I was a bit baffled by all this, then gradually began to see it everywhere, like bloody "iconic". Stop saying every single thing under the sun is 'Iconic'!

Oh I'm a Wiltshire girl but also lived in Bristol, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. My parents were from Bristol, Grandparents from Bristol and Somerset. I live in Cumbria now and I've never heard anyone do anything similar. I find dialects fascinating.

I even saw someone upholster a footstool on IG recently, and she proudly said ‘isn’t she gorgeous?’ at the end. 😡

Never heard a car, bus etc being referred to as a she, only a ship and tgere is a long history to that. In short, a ship was regarded as protecting sailors like a mother would her children. Who on earth refers to a handbag as a she!
