Help with laptop and system

I need a new laptop. I occasionally work remotely, do I need windows on my new laptop in order to access the windows at work? At work we use office but I personally use Google.

Short answer…. It depends how you access your work systems.

If you’re using VDI like Citrix workspaces (this runs a “viewer” on you local computer which connects to a virtual machine at work) then it will work on anything modern (windows laptop, iPad, Chromebook, etc).

If you’re simply logging into your work Office 365 account, this will work on most things, but on a Chromebook it will be via a browser rather than installed applications. For install apps, it would have to be windows or apple.

If you are connecting directly via a VPN, then your personal computer would have to meet your IT security requirements and there’s no easy answer. Though this is unlikely an option as it is the highest risk to the employer from a cyber security perspective.

This is all very general, because your work IT can impose lots of restrictions to manage access/security. If you have a work need, best thing is to ask IT or dig out any policies/instructions.

I log in via VM something

You absolutely need to speak to your IT people at work. Noone here works for your company so can't tell you what you need. If you have any proprietary systems, you might not be able to log into them remotely.

I use windows 11 however its got alot of the Microsoft app telemetry removed. They use it to gather information about you and system etc

Google github windows 11 debloater and install in couple if mins. The system will work better with less of MS intrusive apps.

You need to retrain as a tree surgeon.

Your best bet is to phone your IT support department at work and ask them exactly what you need, then take that specification to a computer shop. If you are working remotely, I'm surprised they don't supply the laptop.

I work in public sector and was always provided with a laptop. Public sector systems require very specific security protocols, I am surprised you are allowed to access them via your personal laptop.
Having said that we do have something called "remote desktop" and I can access it via my Mac. But this is meant to be a temporary option for new starters until proper equipment is issued.
Talk to your manager and your IT department. You should absolutely be provided with equipment to do your job public sector or not.

I know my company policy & I am allowed to remote desktop via my own laptop. It’s something I do occasionally. I also have access to work emails on my personal phone 😱

Public sector is also fairly large 😆

You were the one to use it as an excuse for not getting the equipment...
If it is remote desktop you are using them yes, you can access it from a system other than windows. Anything else, your IT should be able to help you out tomorrow morning.
