To hate the trend of places piling plates with food?

Just been for Sunday dinner and it was lovely but the portions are just ridiculous. Yorkshire puddings plonked on top of a mound of meat. I hate it, it means you can’t cut the yorkshires up properly and can’t get to the veg and you’re battling with everything not spilling off the plate.

Same as ordering a burger and getting it so thick you can’t get your mouth round it. I just want one burger in a bun with maybe cheese and tomato/onion/lettuce, and be able to pick it up and bite it without everything sliding out or having to dismantle it first.

If anything I find that portion sizes are getting smaller so plates are not piled as high.

What annoys me is the use of long narrow plates rather than a normal round one. A few places around here use them and it is impossible to balance Your knife and fork on them or else found is served in wide bowls.

I would happily eat somewhere where they’re making the portions smaller at the moment. Maybe all the pubs round here are competing to get as much food as possible piled on a plate. Although at least they’re using plates and the trend for serving food on slates/boards/shovels seems to be over.

I could make my peace with the bowl. I hate it when the plates have no lip.

Our local pub prides itself on everyone taking a huge doggy bag home with them

The bins out of sight of the pub are regularly full to overflowing with them

WhatEvenIsMyPassword · Today 14:22

Possibly because I have no shame, I see it as s takeout second portion - I always bring my tupperware.

Lmnop22 · Today 14:22

I hate this too, especially with burgers which have about four different boujie sauces on which just makes them wet and slippery. They do not taste as good with a knife and fork and wet bread

WhatEvenIsMyPassword · Today 14:23

oh that is depressing @SamphiretheTervosaur

I have also experienced ordering a roast and it arriving assembled into a tower with the Yorkies balanced on top. When this has happened to me, I felt I got the same amount of food, just assembled into a much less appetising and more difficult to eat format.

I assume this is a social media thing. If they do something weird with the food, people might be more likely to take a photo and post it somewhere.

I just want a normal roast.

SquirrelFan · Today 14:38

I agree with @purplecorkheart , portions at the pubs near me are sadly smaller than they used to be - two thin slivers of meat, two roast potatoes, two slender carrots, and some cabbage, topped with a Yorkshire pudding so large as to disguise the vast expanse of empty plate.

likelysuspect · Today 15:05

We find portion sizes huge, just massive. And frequently see plates left around us by other diners with food on, so its not just us.

I think ultimately, while it appears not to make business sense, pubs and restaurants load plates with cheap carby bits of the meal (chips, yorkies, bread etc) so it looks a lot of food, so you're inclined to think its good value for money, but its not really because meals are now like 20 quid for a basic fish and chips or 25 quid for a roast.

We order a starter each and find thats enough now.

I do take my tupperware also, like someone else said. Took home much of a quiche yesterday.

Greenmouldycheese · Today 19:51

I cant stand it when they only give 4 potatoes, a few peas and carrots. Ergh, so stingy. No I want it piled on. I dont want to see the white of my plate.

A cafe near me are making these gigantic cookie burgers now! I have quite a hearty appetite, but I have no idea how anyone could eat this.

I'm finding it less and less appealing to out for food tbh. I agree about the piled plates but also not options if you want just a normal sized lunch that isn't 2000kcal.

AbacusCat · Today 20:09

They're compensating for the food being of indifferent quality by trying to wow customers with enormous portions. They've clearly never heard the maxim "always stop while they're asking for more".

ThatJadeLion · Today 20:12

Nope not near me. Portions are smaller than they've ever been.

Somersetbaker · Today 20:14

I'd rather have less but better quality, and no I don't want your gravy which looks like self-leveling floor compound.

I'd give that a crack, is probably feel sick halfway through and have to stop, but I'd give it a go

Yes - I was looking at the menu for a nearby pub restaurant - due to go with family - nothing less than 1200 calories for a main - that's almost my whole TDEE in one meal and nothing remotely worth wasting all that on - crappy burgers etc.. Ended up having a 500 calorie dessert on its own 😆

YourWatermelonship · Today 20:27

Over here all portions seem to be for starving rugby players. I am 5ft 8 and enjoy eating but I can't remember the last time I finished a meal when eating out. I am beginning to find it off-putting to be honest.

Hiredgun · Today 21:04

I tend to find shrinkflation in restaurants these days or the price has gone up a lot.

Even in the US, the portions ain’t what they used to be.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 21:10

Just ask for an extra plate to sort your dinner out on.

Personally I don't mind a pile of food and love a Scooby burger - it's a challenge! And you don't have to eat it all. Though in the US it can be rather a ridiculous waste when they give you a month's supply of pastrami for a family of four in one sandwich.

I ate three courses today in a restaurant but it was a nicely balanced set menu. Couldn't do that in a pub.

mdinbc · Today 21:10

I appreciate a little room on my plate to shuffle things around! Some restaurants have notoriously large servings, and I have no shame in asking for a take out container at the end of a dinner.

At home I tend to eat veg, carb, then protein in that order, and don't like them touching. Always have, and don't really consider myself ocd.

Santasbigredbobblehat · Today 21:19

I can’t stand it when the burger is way bigger than the bun it’s in and it starts to disintegrate halfway through.
