To regret the colour of my bedroom

We're moving into a new house and I spend a lot of time deliberating over which colour to paint my bedroom. Green is my favourite colour and a lot of things I own are green - clothes, my phone, my car, my old car and much more. I considered other colours but thought I should go with green as it's my favourite... what could go wrong?

Well the shade of green I've chosen is proving tricky to work with and I now see a lot of inspiration pictures on instagram making me regret my choice. You will see from the photo it's not horrible but the problem is I also want green lampshades, curtains, accessories etc. Which is too much bloody green. If I'd gone with a more neutral colour I could've had green as the accent! I'd repaint it right now but it's a big room and the paint was quite expensive, I got it from Valspar at B&Q and they gave me heavy duty instead of normal so it was a bit dear.

What do I do, repaint the room or just deal with it. I think I want cream carpet but don't really want cream curtains, it's a bit plain. I actually want deep blood red curtains but most people in my life are telling me they will look awful!

YABU - it's fine (give me ideas for which other colours I could incorporate)

I love it. Who says it’s too much green? Is that what you think or is someone else complaining? If you have other accessories cream or white or green or tartan or hot pink then that’s your shout. Personally I’d go nuts with red curtains and whatever else if you fancy it, why not? Life’s too short for boring colours. However I’ve been told my house looks like balamory so I’m not a neutrals person and maybe not the best judge 😂

It literally says in the OP that she knows she can repaint but she’d rather not due to cost so is looking for ways to make it work.

I love it. I’d put cream bedding and carpet - I think it would look great.

That chest of drawers is going to look gorgeous against the green. Just saying.

How about painting just one wall cream so you can have more green accessories against that without it being too green on green or costing as much as painting the whole room?

If you think you're going to want to paint over in the end, I'd bite the bullet and paint now before you move stuff in. Delay buying some fo the accessories for a while if you need to.

I colour-drenched our guest bedroom in Farrow & Ball Yeabridge Green which is quite a similar colour @minicooperpooperscooper. We'd actually intended to use it in the hall of our 200 year old seaside cottage (so pleased we didn't as I think it would've been too much!), but I thought it would look interesting paired with some curtain fabric I had planned for the bedroom instead.

Imo, the mix of green, turquoise and red works, but, as you'll see from the pics, we have an eccentric aesthetic 😉

I think I'd work with it if I were you - adding in pattern and texture will layer the look, but I'm not sure I'd add too much more green.

Edited to add...love the idea of that pretty chest of drawers with the green walls! We have an antique Art Nouveau oak-framed mirror behind the door and I agree with other posters that natural woods really work well with the green.

I love green, I painted a teenage bedroom a similar colour to yours many years ago, my mum said it made her feel seasick 😂

colours with furniture and accessories will easily make it more liveable

Add oak toned furniture. Oak trimmer mirror. Try navy/dark/royal blue as a contrasting colour. Even charcoal grey.

Have a look at Sophie Robinson's website for inspiration - she is fantastic with colours. I agree that pink (probably quite a strong pink) could go.

I think I'd have biscuit colour accessories.

sorry and I am a green fan too but I'd have to repaint that. what would you think to a "finish" rather than a total repaint? It would be faster and cheaper but I know its very passe.

I think you need to put some curtains and pictures up and think again. Obviously it looks stark at the moment because there's nothing to relieve the green. My DD uses ChatGPT (I don't know how it works) to show rooms and gardens in her new house and how they would look with different colours schemes. You could have a go at that. Personally I think creams and beiges would suit very well. It's a pretty green, you can make it work.

OP, at the moment, it just looks like a green room. Once you’ve got in curtains (I would second William Morris if the colour’s right) and furniture and bed cover and lampshade (definitely not green - try pale to match the carpet) and pictures, it will be much muted and you might well go back to being pleased with it. You liked the colour which is why you chose it: it’s a bit daunting when there’s nothing to offset it, but once your room is “dressed” it will look quite different.

I absolutely love it. A pp above said adding pale pink in? I would definitely think of gorgeous thick pale pink curtains with hints of green patterns of some sort? Some art on the walls with pinks and a darker green? The cream carpet and then match in the bedding/throws/cushions.

It is very intense, but once you have furniture, pictures etc. in there it will break the colour up a bit and hopefully make it a more restful space.
Good on you for picking such a bold choice! I love my house, but I almost always play it safe with the big spaces and just add colour to shelving, banisters etc. I love your "go for it!" attitude!

I think warm, natural tones will suit the space. Wooden shelving and wooden frames for pictures maybe?

It will be great when it has furniture and things hanging on the walls, mirrors, pictures, bathrobes etc. Some of them can be green but you need other colours too.
I would avoid cream with this shade of green, but have plain white shutters (ideally) or plain white venetian blinds/curtains, and a dark coloured carpet, even dark red if you like.

Just keep all accessories light and neutral, or it will feel really gloomy. I think dark red curtains would be a mistake, how about cream or white with a dark red pattern, or plain curtains with dark red borders/tiebacks?

Definitely needs some accent colour there to break it up and agree that white/cream are not the answer. More than one accent can also work. I'd be looking at a dark navy and/or pale pink along with either dark or oak furniture. Or perhaps a mustard/rust pairing. It really depends a lot on the exact shade. If you can find a duvet or curtains which contain the accent colours in a pattern you like then the rest can work around it.

I love it and our guest room (currently our room) is a similar colour. We're still mid decorating but have a light pink velvet bed and headboard and are going for lots of natural wood and tones in the rest of the room, so wicker type shade on the main light, light beige/cream carpet that was there when we moved in and natural tone blind. Add some colourful paintings coherent with the colour scheme and I wouldn't have green as the main colour on anything else in the room.

I know she says she’d rather not repaint due “cost,” I’m just struggling to understand why we’re treating a couple of cans of paint like a major financial event. 😭 Once again, if she really ends up hating it then she can repaint it and if she decides still likes the green, furnish it and stop catastrophizing ... it's just paint, nothing serious.

One thing I've learnt as someone with bold taste is to ignore everyone else's opinions. Is their home decorated to your taste? Probably not, I bet it's grey and beige, and navy is too wild for them.

Your shade of green is a great art deco/nouveau 1910-1930 colour - get your ideas there.

You could have a look at Charlotte Gaisford on Instagram. She's a fabric and wallpaper designer and has lots of photos and videos of her own (rather gorgeous) farmhouse in Northumbria that she's decorated herself. She uses a very similar shade of green in many of her interior schemes so this might provide some colour scheme or decor inspiration.

She’s just asked for ideas as to how to make it work, so she doesn’t have to repaint. Standard thing to ask a chat forum. It’s not that deep,
