I was walking down the street with my DSes this afternoon.

A woman approached me and asked if I was from this neighborhood.

I said yes, I am, and asked her what she was looking for, assuming it was directions she was after.

She said 'Oh, I just thought you should know, there's a sex offender in the neighborhhood'.

We live in London. It's a busy neighborhood. WTF?

crazy - was he hiding behind a lamp post?

there are sex offenders everywhere!

Ambi · 28/06/2008 17:31

Jesus, that's nice. I bet she thought she was doing you a favour.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/06/2008 17:34

Well, I'm sure there are dodgy people around, we're in a busy city. But unless the sex offender is in my family or circle of friends, why would I care?

And of course DS1 had lots of questions about this convo.

Living in the neighbourhood? Passing through? On bus going through town? Hiding in the sewer and coming up through your toilet at night?

I am quite sure there are many sex offenders in your neighbourhood. In every neighbourhood. What did she expect you to do with that info? Secure your kids to you with duct tape?

If only people understood that the real risk to kids is normally in their own home, not some old man in a dirty mac hiding behind a tree and trying to entice small children with a bag of toffees.

wonderstuff · 28/06/2008 17:38

How strange, was she a bit special?

NotQuiteCockney · 28/06/2008 17:38

Well, quite.

I mean, my kids were biking ahead of me on the pavement, maybe she felt they were at risk?

The thing is, if you're going to pass weirdo rumours like this, wouldn't you expect them to have some more content, like who this person was, or where he or she lives? It was all just so

She didn't seem particularly special. She had a kid with her, it wasn't the usual 'mad bored old lady' experience.

dear god

NotQuiteCockney · 28/06/2008 17:44

Oh, hello Frances, how is the 'getting bigger and bigger and not yet popping' thing going?

We should be able to visit you sometime in early Aug, if you're around. Well, as long as there are no sex offenders in your neighbourhood ... ask some random women in the street, they'll tell you ...

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 28/06/2008 18:04

oh yes please! no, no sex offenders here
I've checked everyone out personally, you know

the getting bigger and bigger thing is kind of losing its shine a bit
everybody you meet has some hilarious remark
bless em

NotQuiteCockney · 28/06/2008 18:04

Oh god, everyone always thought I had twins. Even people in the hospital.

It got old, fast. (I think I seemed huge partly because I'm not norkish, so there was nothing overshadowing the bump.)
