AIBU to stay in a religious workplace where my views differ?

I feel disingenuous. My workplace is a religious organisation, where you are expected to believe and live out the faith.

I do have faith, but let’s just say that my faith is a much much less conservative and less rule-bound version than theirs.

I struggle with attitudes in the workplace sometimes, because I do not share my colleagues views on the rainbow community etc.

I work in admin, so there is not much direct need to discuss or expose my different beliefs, but I still am immersed in the environment.

i would look for another job, but the job market is so difficult right now, that it is very hard to find admin roles.

As long as your comfy going along with and being respectful of the beliefs of the workplace then carry on. If you don’t feel you can then look to move

I think it's fine to stay if you want to. You're presumably performing the role adequately.

I just find the whole religious atmosphere suffocating sometimes because it permeates everything and I don’t agree with all of it.

I work for a Christian charity and would say that I’m a Christian but don’t agree with everything they believe and don’t currently go to church. No one has ever said anything or made me feel uncomfortable for not sharing their views.

I stay because I believe in what they do in our community and because they do it out of pure love rather than evangelism.

For me it would depend on what they are doing but if you aren’t comfortable there I would look for another role.

I wouldn't be at all happy but then again I wouldn't have even applied for a job with a religious workplace.

I was going to say that you're fine because you understand where they're coming from and are sympathetic to most of their views, but if you find it claustrophobic then I'd start looking elsewhere. So I don't think you're wrong to stay there because you don't fully share their views.

I would quietly fix up your CV and look around. Only apply for jobs that realky interest you.

A mix of wondering if I’ll be “found out” and frustration that I don’t agree with everything that the organisation does and stands for. At a high level I do, but not all the finer points of doctrine, if you know what I mean.

Keep your head down, do your work, go home again. Avoid conversations about controversial issues. If you’re really bothered by it, find alternative employment, but don’t leave until you do.

Agree. You evidently meet the requirements both to be given and to keep being employed in the role, so it's not disingenuous. It's a matter of preference, whether you think this is better than whatever you'd be doing instead.

Meh, you're not going for an leadership role so it wont particularly affect your actual employment. By all means look for a different job but in the meantime, it's just what keeps a roof over your head and the food on your table.
