To think that the downfall of the Royal Mail is due to staff incompetence?

Sat listening to a programme about Royal Mail staff on BBC radio with my son and I can’t believe the incompetence of a particular staff member they are highlighting.

This staff member is only given one package to deliver in his local village school. Due to utter idiocy he loses said package then wastes his day tracking it down, including deploying both a helicopter and motorbike. By the time he finally tracks it down, he delivers it to the school, its turns out it’s just a teddy bear. The schoolchildren and staff then celebrate this delivery despite the fact that it was him who lost it in the first place!
The whole charade must have cost the Royal Mail thousands and from what I can gather, this isn’t a one off and happens on a weekly basis.

I also have an issue with security because it seems that they are now tracking packages, so when the package goes missing, they can see where it is at all times. Isn’t this a GDPR issue?

It’s no surprise that the RM is in dire straights when one man, apparently employed in the Greendale division, is costing the company tens of thousands . Apparently this has been going on for 45 years, why hasn’t he been brought before a tribunal?

Your opening paragraph is complaining because they lost a package. Your next paragraph is a complaint that they're doing too much to try to prevent losing packages! I suspect no matter what they do you'd complain.

Yes, I have a cat allergy and I would be very concerned about hair all over my letters.

You have got way too much time on your hands and/or you have a major beef with Royal Mail.

Full disclosure: I worked for Royal Mail for a year and the most incompetence I saw was in Management.

EveningSpread · 26/08/2026 21:17

I have a family member who’s a postie.

I can confirm that RM is failing because, like every organisation it seems, they’re bloated with useless middle managers and constantly trying to make posties do 2, 3, or 4 times the work historically assigned to 1 person.

The managers find ways to fiddle the stats to get their bonuses. Since the job is now quite demanding (walking 14 miles a day rain or shine, anyone?) they have a high turnover of staff. And they are alway reorganising things to try to make fewer people magically able to post more stuff.

Same old really: declining working conditions and fewer employees = declining standards.

Omg is this actually a postman pat episode 😂😂

ThunderThunderThunderThunderCats · 26/08/2026 21:20

Sounds like my favourite postman when I was kid. He was lovely, and he had a gorgeous wee cat too. He’s still working hard, probably the same guy I think.

I think the joke has gone over a few people’s heads. 😂

Royal Mail was privatised a few years ago and surprise, surprise it’s failing.

He’s recently got married and had a child too, Julian. I have questions around this also as his wife doesn’t seem to work, he’s supporting a family in a very comfortable lifestyle with only his postman’s wage, in a cost of living crisis? I think he could be the reason so many letters never get to their destination.

Don’t get me started on the fire service, in a place called Pontypridd apparently there are fires regularly started due to the behaviour of a young boy called Norman Price. His mother seems to be useless and his father absent. Why he hasn’t ended up in juvenile detention and his mother on parenting courses I don’t know. Honestly, we are failing in all areas of this country.

He doesn't work for Royal Mail.

hardshoulderr · 26/08/2026 22:08

My husband worked for them briefly over a lockdown and he could tell you that the problem with the Royal mail is the unions

hardshoulderr · 26/08/2026 22:09

Oh
