To think Dolly Parton was some sort of prophet or philosopher

There have been loads of clips of Dolly Parton interviews around and articles with quotes and the more I watch and read, the more I think she was some kind of font of wisdom. An oracle. A prophet.

Her approach to life, everything, she was like Yoda in rhinestones. Just the perfect attitude, and a long, productive, inspirational life.

”Legend” is thrown around liberally but in her case it is fully deserved.

Coming from grinding poverty sure is one way to get your priorities straight in life. I don’t think that sense of being grateful for her lucky break/phenomenal talent ever left her, and she wanted to share her good fortune.

She was a 'poet'. Her lyrics were incredible.

She appealed to both men and women, which is highly unusual.

She was a very smart cookie and made a lot of money, but she used a lot of that money for good causes and just seemed to radiate joy.

I saw her a couple of years ago in Nashville, she was being interviewed and I was lucky enough to be in the audience.

She was very funny, and very candid about her life and plans and was also a mix of being self-depreciating and modest, but at the same time she readily acknowledged she was always looking for ways to promote the brand and make money to fund all the things she wanted to do.

We need more Dolly in the world. 💐

I think what people want to do with their bodies and faces is their business. What I don’t like is women who deny surgery. I admired the fact that she fully acknowledged wearing wigs, having surgery etc. I would welcome more honesty from the likes of the Kardashians, Nicole Kidman etc. It is very damaging to deny it.

Yes, I completely agree. I heard someone make the point today that she could easily have been a billionaire but chose to be a philanthropist. I had no idea until today that she donated huge amounts to the research for a Covid jab.

But my favourite quote remains “I don’t mind if people call me a dumb blonde. I know I’m not dumb and I’m definitely not blonde!”

I would save your sadness for someone that needs it. Dolly was as happy as Larry, had the best life anyone could think of quite frankly.

I think religion was more important to her than she widely let on. She lived by those principles.

Do we thing people would have recognised her as Dolly, without the wigs and the makeup?
Do we think some of those boobs were, effectively a stuffed bra that could be removed? Making her less obvious in the street

She was never papped without the wigs or just doing her own thing with her husband.

She was a good woman, quick witted and funny with some great songs.

I knew about her books and other stuff. The world is a sadder place without Dolly.

One of the few people on the side of alleviating poverty, encouraging literacy and supporting the vulnerable whom Trump had nothing bad to say about.

I’ve surprised myself with quite how genuinely upset I am at her death.

She was a truly beautiful person, inside and out, and just seemed to unfailingly do and say the right thing - always so kind, generous and smart. And truly funny (DH was laughing this morning at a list of her aphorisms).

A few more people in the world following her lead and aspiring to her values could only be a good thing, especially if they’re doing in false lashes and rhinestone flares.

She truly was a legend. My friend just shared a video of the kings guard at the palace doing a rendition of 9to5 which had me smiling. RIP Dolly; you were a treasure.

Another little known Dolly fact was that she was also an uncredited executive producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer - her production company Sandollar backed the original film and kept their belief by backing the TV show. For the first few years she’d send personalised gifts to all the cast at Christmas but she was never credited for her involvement, which is what she wanted. The only nod was that Buffy’s birthday was the same as Dolly’s - 19 January.

She’d probably be touched by your concern but tell you to save it - she was always absolutely up front, very funny and merry as hell about all her various procedures!

She actually told an interviewer once that she could easily go out and about unrecognised because the ‘Dolly’ persona was all about the wigs and outfits and make up. Without them she could pass unnoticed and just go about her business. She was way ahead of her time in understanding how to be a global celebrity without allowing it to consume and define her.

That still doesn’t make it in any sense an ok message. I mean, I like her, think she was a brilliant singer-songwriter, and a warm, likeable personality, and someone who did impressive amounts of good, but some kind of sage? No.
