Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments.

Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room.

Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

Gross holiday in Marbella full of them and barking and eating off plates ! Ewwwwww

I know. I was a good dog owner too when I had one!

But the issue is too many dogs and too many bad owners. The general standard of behaviour in the public isn't great these days so it's not surprising there are issues.

Dog friendly establishments still maintain hygiene ratings.
Dogs are not allowed in food preparation areas, but then nether are customers.

Ok, so you are agreeing with me? My beloved dog comes in every pub and cafe with me.

The point is that guide dogs being allowed everywhere is very different to pets allowed everywhere. 5 dogs in a shop is worse than one dog was here last week. So by saying that there's no point in making anywhere dog-free because they're always going to allow guide dogs is a strawman. In an ideal world dh wouldn't be allergic but best case scenario where we can all get on is guide dogs are allowed but pets aren't. This means that deaf or blind people are able to go about their lives but the small number of guide dogs in public places means the allergen is spread out far enough that dh can be in public without too much issue.
If you let the 40% of people with dogs bring them everywhere he is constantly around an allergen meaning his immune system is constantly on overdrive and he is more likely to have a severe reaction.

I agree I have seen some.really irresponsible owners and entitled myself and it is annoying I get it but posts like these everyone is tarring us all with the same brush !!! And it's not fair 😭

I agree. On here, just having a dog means you are irresponsible and socially inept.

I really don’t understand people in the other camp to me. I won’t say which I’m in. But I honestly don’t get the other people!!

That’s not what I see.
When there’s a post about an irresponsible dog owner (off lead and out of control, jumping up, incessant barking, bothering others) I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dog owner on here hold their hands up and say “yup it’s me, you’re right”, instead most of the dog owners jump in to defend themselves and their dog.
None of the irresponsible owners are on MN.

As a baby, ds1 did once bring out a finger-full of poo from his nappy in the middle of a pancake restaurant, @menopausalmare. I’d suggest that might have been more unpleasant for the other patrons than a dog licking their bottom.

Dh whipped him out of the restaurant at warp speed, while I paid the bill and gathered our stuff, and hopefully we didn’t cause too much disgust.

Do you know how many dogs got stolen from being tied up outside? There is no way I'm leaving my dog unattended outside.

The dog owners who don’t take their dogs with them are more likely the irresponsible ones if they leave them at home alone for more than four hours.

Its quite hard to stay away from dogs where i live, 4 pubs all of which say yes to dogs, 6 bars/restaurants all of which say yes to dogs, 1 turkish restaurant which I think is a no, 5/6 cafes all of which are yes….

garden centre 20 minutes walk is a yes to dogs but not in the indoor part of the cafe or on the sofas in the covered outside bit…which gets completely ignored cos reasons

friend of mine has done dog psychology and she says that loads of dogs are showing stress signs in cafes etc and no….before anyone comments she absolutely says its not all dogs, just most

don’t know why people take their dogs shopping either

some stupid people allow their dogs to lie all over the walkway in restaurants/cafes, saw a waitress stepping over one the other day (dog very well behaved, the owners not so much 😀)

dogs shouldn’t be in restaurants, cafes or shops. Unless they are assistance dogs. They are animals.

children can be awful too but they are human and the establishments are designed for humans.

humans are paid for - they order food/drink (unless babies). Dogs don’t pay.

unfortunately there’s not many places anymore that don’t allow dogs. maybe there should be a dog charge. Charge per dog to be in the setting? Might at least get some decent work behaved dogs then!

I agree that it’s actually really hard to find dog free eateries now. Google is no help as if you ask for a list of dog free restaurants, you just get a list of dog friendly ones.

Your dogs must live a strange life! We have always taken ours on holiday (UK of course) and they enjoy the wonderful walks in other areas. Really bizarre attitude to dog ownership! Ours have always been part of our lives and have enriched our holidays and day to day outings to coffee shops and pubs after walks…they are happier and better tempered for it too! Perhaps you live in a busy town??? Our rural community welcomes and caters for dogs.

An establishment that welcomes dogs is designed for dogs too.
I went to a restaurant with my mum and her dog today. She bought our food, so I didn't pay. She also bought her dog food too. If her dog was not with us, she would have spent less. So what is the logic in charging someone just for having a dog there?
