These were his words this morning.

We live abroad in a place where a lot of people are coming to live, escaping the uk and America.
He says with everything on the news, the way it's going and what the people coming to where we are tell him, that we'd be mad to return.
Is he being realistic? I want to return to be with family desperately and have a strange feeling that I need to do it soon

Would we be mad to return at this time? If yes, then when!

He's not wrong. Im in my 50s. I cannot believe how much the UK has gone downhill in the last 10-15 years.

I have just come back from a Scandinavian country and I can't believe how much cleaner it felt. And quieter. And safer. If I could leave the UK like you have, I would. It's going to get far worse before it gets better because there are zero initiatives in place to halt or turn round the decline.

Maybe this is it, you don't realise what it's like until you live in/see more of some other countries?

It’s really all personal preference. I returned back to the UK after years overseas and love being home and love being in the UK. I think it’s a great place. I know others with very different views.

Basically crime etc

Maybe deal in facts and not biased reporting from certain ‘news’ outlets?

He's right. We now jave a country that has sold all ots assets to foreign investors and manufactures next to nothing.
The public nurse has fucking great hole in it that's getting bigger.
Anyone with anything and by that i mean even if you dont have very much will be taxed like fuck soon to try and catch the horse that bolted long ago.
The light at the end of this tunnel wont be seen for a couple of generations, if at all. Certainly not in my lifetime.
Anyone who thinks different must have thier head in the clouds.
Its bleak at best.

I dont know where you are and every country has its cons but seriously the UK is up shit creek without a paddle.

A lot of that is true for most of Europe and the US, decline of the big democracies. I really don't know where you would go that would be so great. I wouldn't want to be anywhere non-English speaking, too old and lazy to learn a language properly now. Most places are too hot or too cold or too unstable or wouldn't let me in. Wish I knew where we are talking about...

We're white,

Immigration, safety, cost of living, quality of life...everything basically!

Ok you may be right comparatively if it’s NZ or Aus, although they have CoL issues too I think

But you miss your family? It’s a tricky one

Another factor is jobs and if you have dc who will need one soon. That’s pretty bad here

DeftGoldHedgehog · Yesterday 15:36

It's one of the safest and most free countries in the world. There are countries with a higher standard of living but each have their own problems. Also we won't be fucked over by climate change quite so quickly as other places either.

Pedant61 · Yesterday 15:37

The UK is a wealthy, liberal democracy - I don't see his problem.
All countries have some aspects of good and bad, but I'm pretty sure there are a lot worse places.

ranchdressing · Yesterday 15:37

I'm guessing Spain. Honestly, life is great here for rich expats. Your kids will struggle though, just like all the other Spanish kids growing up here being priced out of their own neighbourhoods.

Nice to hear this x

I'd agree.

If you choose the right place to live in the UK it is safe and presumably you'd have the finances to choose a safer area.

You could always go to Ireland if your DH doesn't want to come back to the UK. But I am not sure it's that much better other than being in the EU.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 15:37

Kopfkino · Yesterday 15:35

I used to be an expat, 4 countries and 18 years overseas.

My DH was adamant that we would stay in the UK forever now but a few days ago he said the same thing, that the UK is f*cked and we should think about leaving when the DC are all past Uni. The biggest thing for him is the tax.

Tax in this country is lower than many other developed countries and Europe though. Where are you going to go?

Mycatmax · Yesterday 15:37

Your problem is that if you are in Spain or Portugal, you can’t move back to UK with your child unless your DH agrees. Will he?

Did you consider that before you moved?

I hope it all works out for you.

RumPidgeon · Yesterday 15:38

My guess is Canada and if so then I’d stay where you are. Visit when necessary and enjoy your life abroad.

Chippednailtoepolish · Yesterday 15:38

smallglassbottle · Yesterday 15:28

Are you joking? You think we're all going to end up in a circle singing kumbaya in a few years? Of course the country is fucked. We're on a one way journey to being run out. I've told the dcs to leave if they can. This is happening throughout Europe, Canada, the US and Australia/NZ though, so?

This is what many say-but where to go?

Ireland? Oh god the DH will want to return back to current country within a week of the rain

Greenlawnbrownlawn · Yesterday 15:38

Overpopulated.
The country's going to be concreted over to satisfy the need for housing.
The NHS is failing more and more year on year.
Lawlessness is prevalent, especially among the young.
Many people seem to think that education is pointless.
There is a real fear of going out alone after dark (and this isn't an inner city)

Maybe it's the same everywhere, but that's my take on Britain today. Not totally fucked but getting there fast.

In England?! All we see on the news and everywhere, it's shocking

It’s the same thing that British media does with the US. Take a news story and run with it,
blow it out of proportion, turn it into propaganda to suit a narrative. Then if you move from England to the US (like I did) you’re like “Oh wait that was all nonsense, it’s lovely here.”

I’m sure whatever country you’re in is doing the same thing with their news about the UK.

It's not ignorance of other countries or some kind of sheltered stupidity OP, but you can feel that way if it soothes you.

YorksMa · Yesterday 15:38

My guess is that he's getting his news from dodgy right-wing, conspiracy sources and from those who have left the UK for their own reasons, which will obviously be biased against coming back here. We are no more 'fucked' than we were in the 70s (strikes, 3 day week, power cuts), the 80s (Thatcherism, poll tax) or the 90s (Black Wednesday, sleaze, the death throws of the IRA) etc etc etc. Every generation thinks it's living through end times. Yes, there are people suffering and we're all feeling the COL pinch, but such has it ever been in one way or another. If your husband has fallen down a racism rathole, that's a whole other question, but rest assured most people are living peacefully beside their neighbours - as always. Get him to turn off Fox News and plug his brain back in.

UnpopularOpinionsIWouldUsuallyKeepToMyself · Yesterday 15:38

Well, if he’s only being exposed to the opinions of people who have left the UK for the secret magical place you now all live, he’s not really getting a rounded view of reality is he?
Also, you’re straight and white, educated and with decent careers and property owners - you’re going to be insulated from the worst outcomes in pretty much any place you choose to eventually settle no matter what.

MathiasBroucek · Yesterday 15:39

The UK is fine. Sure, some things have got worse but it's better than most alternatives

Sunnibee · Yesterday 15:39

Chippednailtoepolish · Yesterday 15:19

Crime? That's definitely not the issue. Cost of living yes, crime no.

Chippednailtoepolish · Yesterday 15:39

SilenceInside · Yesterday 15:28

@Chippednailtoepolish if what your DH says is like what that poster has written then it's not at all about "crime etc" is it? It's about politics and policy, tax and the economy.

I think just everything really as Ive said in another post, a whole combination of factors, but safety for Dc is paramount
