To not want to pay for meningitis B

Prettycolorfulflowers · 26/08/2026 12:29

DD took a gap year and starting uni in September; as she was born before September 2007 she can’t get the vaccine for free. We can not afford the £320.

I think this is very unfair. We spoke to pharmacy and GP.

You have two choices i am afraid. You either think that or is really important and pay or don't.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 26/08/2026 12:30

Is she moving into university halls?

Will the university do it? Not everyone got £320 spare lying around

Oh my image is under review for now. But basically the NHS website says she is eligible if born after 2001 and starting university for the first time

We spoke to the pharmacy. They said we have to pay

Why not try a different pharmacy and show them the relevant info on the NHS website?.

You need to try different pharmacies - on the NHS website there is a link to pharmacies where your DD will be eligible.

Or book online through NHS and get it for free but can’t do it unless you are born before after September 2007

She should be able to get it as she’s starting uni for the first time - see screenshot someone posted upthread. Have you actually tried booking it online?

Sorry if this sounds pointed, but what did DD do on her gap year?

is it the case that all students need the vaccine but if born in the right year it will be given for free? Or is it something to do with travelling to another part of the world? If she had a job during her gap year could she use some of the money she has saved for uni?

This really. My youngest son is entitled to it on the NHS as he’s just left school. My eldest is going into 2nd year at Uni so not entitled on the NHS. I’m going to pay for it anyway for him. I’m lucky I suppose that I can easily afford it.

OneTicklishPoster · 26/08/2026 12:36

Just go to a different pharmacy that is taking part in the free campaign.

She is entitled if she meets the other criteria - by age she is eligible.
My daughter just had hers - same situation, year out, age 19, starting uni in September 26.

Yes, you need to be born after September 2007 to book online as she took a gap year, she can’t book online. Crazy

This is something I would happily go into debt for
Get a 0% credit card and pay off what you can each month if you have no other options
It's not worth the risk of not having it

She doesn’t need to use any money, she’s eligible for the vaccine.

Have you even shopped around or just tried one pharmacy?

As has been mentioned several times, this isn’t necessary, the daughter is eligible for the free vaccine
