Podcasters and youtubers need to stop doing this 🙄

You click on a video or podcast because the subject looks interesting and within about 5 seconds they’re saying:

“If you’re new here, make sure you subscribe…”

Yes, I’m new here. You haven’t actually given me any reason to subscribe yet! I’ve seen your little intro and heard about 10 seconds of you talking. I don’t even know if I’m going to like you or your stuff.

Just get on with the content. If it’s good and I enjoy listening to you, I’ll subscribe.

It’s especially irritating with long-form stuff. I’ve deliberately put on a 45-minute video/podcast because I want to listen to something interesting and then the first few minutes are “subscribe, like, comment, follow me on Instagram…buy my book, join the patreon” ...

And before you know it, the “30 minute deep dive into X” that I put on specifically to listen to while walking the dog has actually contained about 15 minutes of X.

I don’t need a trailer for the thing I have already clicked on. I am here for The Thing.

I don’t mind a brief intro, but when there’s a subscription plea, sponsor message, selling of course/book etc, personal waffle, “what we’re going to cover today”, recap of the last episode and THEN we finally get to the subject… I'm irritated.

I just press on the 30 second forward things a couple of times to skip the ads

Agree! I absolutely hate watching Tiktoks where they have a good hook but the second sentence is utterly wasted on introducing themselves by name, telling you what they do and telling you to "subscribe for more" before getting to the topic they promised in the hook. Just wasted 10 seconds of my time with your fucking elevator pitch so I always scroll away immediately.

@TheGoldenOwl are you new to sm? It's been around 20 years now and has evolved.

I remember a home show many years ago may have been Location cant remember but I gave up watching it as I remember it went for 30 mins and most of the time was ''coming up we will show'' ''recap this happened'' hardly any of it was actual show

DeftGoldHedgehog · 25/08/2026 05:17

Websites need to stop doing that as well. I need to read articles and see your stuff before I subscribe to anything.

Hokkuspokkus · 25/08/2026 05:32

Recipe websites are worse than tiktok for this!

Best ever lasagne recipe.

Once upon a time, I, Angela, was born to two human beings who themselves were born more than 3 decades earlier in a small village. After being born into this small village I was raised...

And then when I turned 5 I realised I love cooking and the thanks for that goes to my grandmother, herself once born into the world...

Not new, no. I don't have social media but I do listen to podcasts and long form youtube content.

I suppose you could say after many years of this my patience is wearing thin.

I also think it has got worse in this way the past few years.

I get the irritation but Calls to actions like subscribe, generally really help subs go up, so no one’s going to stop doing it, likewise the pushing of the other stuff as they often pay for the making of the video/podcast.

wherearemypeople · 25/08/2026 07:58

I don't find that too irritating as most YouTubes I watch just say it quickly. But I do find shopping websites really frustrating. I follow a link to something that looks a bit interesting, start to browse and immediately get popups offering a first order discount and do I want the app etc. No, give me 2 minutes of browsing time, if i'm still here then i'm probably interested.

AbacusCat · 25/08/2026 08:05

I don't mind a brief 'subscription call' - it's how they make a living. But things I watch (YouTube, I don't use TikTok) tend to have it at the end "If you enjoyed this, don't forget to subscribe ..." and a promo of the channel which is absolutely reasonable.

I get more annoyed by excessive adverts on YouTube. I don't mind a few adverts - again, I accept people need to make money - but sometimes they're every couple of minutes, and even more annoyingly, you get the same advert again and again. If wasn't in the market for an energy drink at 19:31 hrs, I'm not going to have changed my mind by 19:34 hrs!

Makebelieveanotherlife · 25/08/2026 09:17

I can’t stand the comment whatever for the link. Annoys me to no end. Especially if the product is in another country and it tries changes all your settings.

I just screenshot the item and google search it.

Thecatspantaloons · 25/08/2026 13:30

I think they need to because statistically loads of people will watch the creators videos over and over and not subscribe and it's free after all and helps the creator ...😏 I'm so chronically online.

Sometimes I do this, because although I may like some of their content, I may not like them as people i may strongly disagree with their morals, politically and I don't want to help them financially 😳 I know how petty this sounds.
