AIBU to question Reform's plan to prioritise married couples for social housing?

Reform have proposed to prioritise social housing for various groups : 'Rules would be changed to reserve at least half of all social homes in England for British-born workers aged under 35, with prioritisation also given to married couples, veterans, victims of domestic violence and care leavers.'

I agree with DV victims, those with children, care leavers : veterans are also at high risk of homelessness. But why prioritise married couples over single people? I'm not convinced that's fair. I assume it's to encourage marriage which is a good aim but I'm not convinced if this is the right decision.

It's both a way to demonise single mums, perhaps popular with the Daily Mail/GB News crowd, and a way to make women stay in marriages irrespective of how they are treated. Which fits in with their rolling back of maternity rights etc. plans too.

I agree with you and don't think married couples should have priority either. I feel sorry for boys/men. Women rightly get priority if they have children; men-nothing.

Well, they want to leave the ECHR. And the ECHR makes it illegal to fire women for being pregnant. Given the fact that Pregnant Then Screwed are still very much in business, anything that increases the risk of discrimination against pregnant women is not desirable.

I don't think you understand how council/social housing works since you've described it as subsidised and at the expense of the council.

I think they should scrap social housing fullstop. Everyone has to provide for themselves, no handouts. In other countries family's help each other out more. It's not down to taxpayers to subsidise poor choices and caring responsiblities should come down to the family. Here old people get chucked in a care home, kids have kids to get council houses and refugees come in and sponge off the state. It's a joke. I'd stop the whole lot.

I don’t know details. We moved from the south east to a much less well off part of the Midlands and I’m just really surprised how many of the kids are brought up by mum (generally a superstar) and dad not in the picture. This was far less common where we were before. Not saying it didn’t happen there but was like two people out of two classes worth of kids. Not a good proportion of my kids’ friends like here.

Take a look at the elderly parents board. Loads of women, mostly, straining their health, mental & physical, to care for elderly parents. People are not as callous to elderly as you are painting them.

I see, thank you. I think prioritising married couples for housing could help this but there needs to be wider work on these issues. Council housing priority could give men extra incentive to marry but the motivation needs to be intrinsic too (plus issues of jobs etc being so unstable)

Sadly for you, social housing is not subsidised. Well, not by landlords. Tenants' rent pays for it to be built/bought and maintained so perhaps they are doing the subsidising?

Yes I agree - it feels as if it could be abused. I’d really like to know if this is a properly researched proposal with any evidence to suggest what problem exactly it might solve and how, or just someone’s sudden inspiration with nothing behind it.
