To wonder when boobs went out and bums came in?

Just come back from a beach holiday in Italy and both Dsis and I commented on lack of topless women. In 11 days I didn't see one! (Tbf, I wasn't scouring the sun loungers on the beach but not noticing even one seems odd). In the 80s and 90s when I was a teen/ young woman there were loads of topless women on European beaches. However, I did notice a huge number of thong bikinis, or the ones that really go up your bum and show off bum cheeks (even very young girls - preteens). Almost everyone wore one.

What's caused this change? Just fashion changes? Why has it changed? Sis thought maybe greater US influence on Europe?

I'm not surprised. Why anyone would have surgery to make their backside look so comically massive is beyond me.

In the 80’s I remember thong bikinis being a thing in Brazil. Not one of my friends or me would have ever worn one in the 90’s when I was a teen. Grew up by the beach so was there a lot and had a lot of bikinis between us. Now they are everywhere and also on much younger girls. I think it’s just the further pornification of society. I’m not saying people who wear them watch porn - just that stuff that used to be quite niche is now accepted as perfectly normal. It has evolved to be acceptable in the mainstream society.

To be honest, after my last holiday, I’d get a thong bikini bottom for next time. I don’t want such a big white line and no one seems to care.

It can evolve all it likes, although I agree with you. I think those thing bikinis are bloody awful. It's up to each woman what they wear though.

I’ve just come back from holiday and was quite shocked by the bare arses on show. In my day (the 90’s), I owned a cardigan that I referred to as my ‘bum jumper’. It’s purpose was to be tied around my waist (on top of my mini skirt) to cover my enormous bottom (I had a tiny behind).

I'm equally perplexed by the lips that look like inflamed bum holes.

There have been medical concerns over silicon leakages from breast implants requiring reversals and deterring that type of cosmetic surgery.
While bum lifts and implants are another minefield of surgical safety, being the body's largest muscle, there is more chance of enhancing it naturally with weight based exercise which at least much healthier.

I'm sticking with my bum whether it's trendy or not.

I really could do without standing behind a thong bikini bottom on steep steps at a water park. That was far too much information a foot away from my face! It also must surely have rubbed on the water slides that don't use floats.

Oh, I think it’s laughable. And I doubt very many people over 25 are paying much attention to it. I just thought it was funny in an eye rolling way.

I agree with pornification of women and intimate waxing on increase affecting the 'bums on show' trend. Most thong bikinis are very skimpy at the front too. I think even if we go back to theskinny look, the bums will still be on show.

I think I felt more comfortable with topless as men go topless too so it felt more equal somehow, rather than sexual. All boobs were on show as a way to avoid tan lines. I didn't see one male in thong bottoms (though PP did refer seeing it in Spain). There were a lot of young men showing the waist band of their designer underpants they were wearing under their swimshorts - which I thought must be very uncomfortable. Pants take ages to dry, unlike swimshorts and this was a double layer so they must be constantly damp. Ughhh!

My DD is 17 and would never wear a thong bikini so it isn't everyone young but I do wonder where trends will go next. It's very interesting.

That is pretty hideous. I mean, not like some sights you see on the beach but horrible that someone had that much added to their natural bottom, and that was the effect. I'd rather have my little natural 50 year old bum any day.

This kind of body shape is common in many parts of the world eg J Lo. Latin women tend to be like this. Many black women are built like this and it is a desired look. As others have said it used to be all about the wanting a no hip, no bum look as pushed in the fashion and TV world - now it's different. The Kardashians added to this with their exposure but also look at all the rap videos featuring women's backsides. Love Island type programmmes also add to this type of swimwear. As for the body positivity movement it seems anyone and everyone can show it all.

Sorry @BibbityBoppityTwo but I don't think it's funny that a lot of people are stupid enough to hang on every word of random people on the internet who have cottoned on to the fact they can make a living off manipulating and exploiting them.

The fact that people are actually doing dangerous and ridiculous things, using unsafe products and undertaking unsafe procedures because they are in thrall to these influencers is not a joke.

It's been a while now. It was boobs and bum for a good while, but now Gen Z fashion trends rarely show off cleavage or wear push up bras etc like was the fashion in the 00s. This generation prefer to minimise their boobs in clothes but emphasise the bum. I'm sure at some point it will come back round.

These big fake out of proportion bums make me laugh. They remind me of something you would see in the Hall of Mirrors at a fairground.

I blame Sir Mix-A-Lot. We can date the turning point very precisely to May 1992, with the release of "Baby Got Back." Rapping "I like big butts," while standing on top of a giant gold arse, was a bold move at the time, but the sentiment has now gone completely mainstream.

Perhaps. But she's a complete prude even with her same age, same sex cousin! (Shocked cousin walked round the hotel room NAKED). Just the way DD is and that's ok. She does wear a bikini but a 'normal' one.

It was sometime around 2010, these things go very much in cycles somit will.probably flip in another 10 years or so

I read it is an hour glass shape, a primal and child bearing hips thing 🙄 Honestly alot wear thongs on beaches who really shouldn't, all of while men completely covered up with shorts. Bring back normal bikini bottoms!

Yeah I don't call her a prude to her face. She has some quirks. I'm not allowed to see her in a bra but a bikini is OK 🤷🏼‍♀️. She has the most enviable hourglass shape so I'm glad she's growing up now and not in my day when her bum would have been considered big. She has the boobs to balance it all out and seems to like her body so I'm not worried. Bit of a digression, sorry...!
