To wonder when boobs went out and bums came in?

Just come back from a beach holiday in Italy and both Dsis and I commented on lack of topless women. In 11 days I didn't see one! (Tbf, I wasn't scouring the sun loungers on the beach but not noticing even one seems odd). In the 80s and 90s when I was a teen/ young woman there were loads of topless women on European beaches. However, I did notice a huge number of thong bikinis, or the ones that really go up your bum and show off bum cheeks (even very young girls - preteens). Almost everyone wore one.

What's caused this change? Just fashion changes? Why has it changed? Sis thought maybe greater US influence on Europe?

I don’t like seeing someone’s bare backside. I’m old enough to remember when small bums were desirable.

Palomiino · 24/08/2026 05:33

Kardashian effect. Which is good because it has meant that the look popular in the 00s (stick thin with stuck on boobs) is out of favour. We live in an era of everyone wanting an athletic shape and going to the gym.

Topless sunbathing is extremely passé.

Tamtim · 24/08/2026 04:23

I don’t understand why people wear them, they are unflattering even on the perkiest bum.

Have to agree with this though! Luckily I’ve not come across it.

abracadabra1980 · 24/08/2026 05:34

Agree with others re the Kardashians.

twinklystar23 · 24/08/2026 06:23

Rise in porn/anal sex.

Heard some influencer the other day refer to your standard bikini bottoms as “giant nanna pants”! Apparently the ones that expose the butt cheeks are the only acceptable ones now.

Only acceptable to who?

How did we get to the position of ignorant people on social media dictating to others what they should and shouldn't do and what they should and shouldn't think?

Why does anyone actually watch these influencers or give a damn what they say?
It would be laughable if it weren't so sinister.

Gawd knows..Maybe it's got something to do with all.the anal sex that's so common .

is it really. First I've heard

Yello24 · 24/08/2026 06:41

Agree this has happened in my lifetime. Maybe also related to the resistance to only one type of body being seen as desirable in the media. Thin white women with big boobs. Other cultures celebrate the bum more! It might be quite healthy- all sorts of shapes being appreciated.

friedaklein · 23/08/2026 22:45

With the Kardashians?

Yes this. It used to be a major faux pas to have a “big bum”- I distinctly recall the “does my bum look big in this” shite of the 90/00s. The Kardashians made it fashionable and lots of women are having injections to make it bigger which is pretty nuts really.

I think it’s going out again now though and very skinny is back in thanks to ozempic.

Housewife2010 · 24/08/2026 06:47

Maybe due to the popularity in intimate waxing too.

Toodoloo · 24/08/2026 06:49

Maybe topless is not popular on the beach but I see far more young women wearing revealing tops without bras these days which also seems to be a trend.

PetiteParakeet · 24/08/2026 06:55

But for a lot of us a naked arse is still equivalent to getting your tits out - it’s hard to change your hardwiring from what was seen as normal vs too sexual for public display when you grew up. So I can’t help thinking “oh FFS put it away, no one wants to see that” when women wander around in thong bikinis among the kids at the pool (different from lying on a sun lounger in a thong or topless).

Although obviously it’s not true that ‘no one’ wants to see it, I expect a lot of blokes are quite happy.

summater · 24/08/2026 07:08

I have a big bum even though I quite thin unfortunately this is all much to late for me.

Girlintheframe · 24/08/2026 07:08

Bums have been in for a while now, that’s why everyone is at the gym. Think it was the kardasians tbh. Every young women I know practically is going to the gym to try to get a similar physique

I don't think topless bathing has ever really been popular in Italy- maybe more Spain and France?

Certainly spain and also eastern europe when ive been on holiday in recent years

Rainyatlast · 24/08/2026 07:10

It’s probably that fashions change. Like in the 1920s slim, straight up and down was the fashion then in the 1950s it was big pointy boobs and a small waist and in the 1960s breasts were out and legs were in with mini skirts.

I agree that with the weight loss jabs it might change again to super thin. I notice all the celebrities are slim these days even those who were not overweight eg Demi Moore.
The Kardashian look doesn’t fit in with that.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/08/2026 07:14

I cant understand the big bum thing. Ive spent my whole life trying to get rid of my large bottom which I hated. Ive finally done it and got the small bottom of my dreams and everyone is walking around with massive arses. Whats with that.
Ive also list my large chest (mounjaro) but thats another story.

Not sure why stick thin with stuck on bum is better than stick thin with stuck on boobs tbh. And the Kardashians have got stuck on boobs and bums anyway. To me an athletic shape is someone shaped like a tennis player or a sprinter, not a Kardashian

The ones I don’t really understand are the tanga ones that you gather into your bum. It just looks like an unflattering wedgie to me.

Having said that, Next sells them so perhaps I am hugely out of date!

The kardashians made big bums popular, even though their’s are fake !

She didn't like it when those photos were released!

utahsainthood · 24/08/2026 07:52

I think the thong bikinis look awful. I wouldn’t have worn them even when I was young with an amazing figure and my DD16 would never wear them either. She looks lovely in all styles of bikini. I hate the leggings people wear to the gym as well that are designed to make your bum stick out.

hardshoulderr · 24/08/2026 07:53

Yes, back in the 80s an early 90s small bums were good and large bums kinda accurately -were just fat

hardshoulderr · 24/08/2026 07:53

Hence the expression. - Does my bum look in this?

Me too - mine sticks out. I always hated it as a teen but now I would be adored, shame I am knocking on 50 now 😂

hahabahbag · 24/08/2026 07:58

No idea, the thong ones just are so inappropriate unless you are still because you get an eyeful of what they are supposed to be covering as women (or men, yes men’s thongs in Spain) as they walk past your lounger - i suspecting cheap mass produced and poorly fitted. Lying still not the issue as I say. I’m sticking to full coverage as no one wants to see mine ( though I do swim naked in appropriate places, that looks better than ill fitted bottoms
