Friends promised a BBQ and delivered an Iceland beige buffet!

As above really, myself, DH and 3 DC went to our friends’ house yesterday on the promise of some drinks in the garden and a BBQ.

They said they were having issues with their BBQ so would do an ‘indoor BBQ’. This consisted of beige food from Iceland!!

AIBU to find this a woeful alternative?

I would have been disappointed but not shown it or said anything
We had a BBQ planned a few weeks ago and the weather let us down but still cooked same things using grill and both ovens
Managed flavoured chicken breast flatties, burgers, sausages and pork chops with home made warm potato salad, coleslaw and crudités

Sounds lovely! I’m sure you impressed as a hostess with that line up.

I just wouldn't eat that. I don't consider that food and would tell them that. They have done 0 effort. But again, I come from a country with foodie culture. I was very surprised that it's normal here to come to a party to Tesco UPPFs and everybody considers that normal and nobody minds! It was a real cultural shock. Most of my friends are Europeans from the continent and Asians - they always cook (almost) everything fresh.

Apart from them not doing it.

I have met quite a few with a foreign background like yours not fancy cooking ordering pizza or take away for the guests.

Can someone help me out? What is an "Iceland Beige Buffet"?

UPPFs that are only considered 'food' in the UK.

BatchCookBabe · Yesterday 21:33

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 21:14

Something like

Sausage rolls
Scotch eggs
Sandwiches
Cheese and pineapple
Charcuterie board
Chutneys
Baguettes
Crackers

-ish.

Sounds fine to me.

I would have been OK if someone had put this buffet on.

Maybe I am easily pleased. Blush

It’s bizarre for sure how ‘normal’ it is here. The links between UPF’s and early onset dementia are also incredibly worrying.

It’s pretty sad. I have people in the office comment on my ‘weird healthy lunches’. Like it’s some sort of anomaly. While loads of them munch their way through their UPF garbage. Think how big the propaganda machine was to make them believe that I’m the weird one because I want to eat food I made from whole food ingredients and they are the ‘normal’ ones buying all the shite of the day.

What an unpleasant person. Mrs Bucket🙄

When I host, I cook everything from scratch and plan my menu for weeks. But I don’t expect everyone else to do that and one Iceland beige buffet with good company isn’t going to do me any harm.

How shallow and snobbish OP sounds! I certainly wouldn’t want to be a friend of yours if that is your attitude!

If you go around telling people that "you don't consider that food" I imagine you don't get many repeat invitations.

Most people are yes. It's not like most BBQ food is made from scratch and only consists of wholesome biodynamic ingredients.

Superhansrantowindsor · Yesterday 21:37

Wouldn’t bother me at all. If you really can’t bring yourself to eat Iceland beige buffet it’s probably best to tell the hosts beforehand and /or bring a dish. You don’t need to make a big deal of it - “hey thanks for the invite. Really looking forward to seeing you at the weekend. I was just wondering what you would be serving food wise as I do have certain dietary requirements”

you then follow up with “ will be so much fun to see you. I’ll bring some x and y to go with what you are doing as I really prefer x and can’t really eat ….”
Most hosts do check dietary requirements but equally YABU to poke fun at a so called friend over their faux pas.

Thank god for 'continentals and Asians' and their high tone 'foodie culture', puts everyone else right in their place with their Iceland crap eh?

There’s an element of truth in fairness. I went to the far east on a post Covid business trip. One thing that stood out to me was just how slender everyone was. I’ve no doubt that’s down to the quality of their food. Just have a walk down your local high street in the UK and it’s a sobering sight.

Fortunately we had some emergency meals stocked from our local farm shop (think along the lines of Charlie Bigham meals you can get in some of the supermarkets).

I think that poster was taking the mick out of you OP but of course you didn’t get that… 🤣

Same here. Despite being neither a 'continental or Asian' (whatever they are), Im a complete 'foodie' and an excellent cook. I cook all my own food from scratch. What i dont do, is turn up my nose at other's choices and certainly not when someone is hosting me. Pure bad manners to do anything other.

I also dont think an afternoon in someones garden eating sausage rolls is going to bring on early onset dementia.

You are right. But if I was to have the choice what to indulge in, it would be the BBQ every time. I say that as a woman who is peri and has to watch the scales these days!

LOL this. ^ The hilarious snobbery on here is farcical. Some people do think they're superior don't they? 😆

Then say a polite "No thank you" to anything else than BBQs. Quite easy. Case closed.

Don’t think one meal will kill you though!

There’s often a lot of processed and red meat on a bbq anyway. The buns etc are UPF and likely the sauces etc.

Would you honestly turn up to friends and tell them you’re not eating their food?

Tahlbias · Yesterday 21:45

Aren't BBQs still banned though?

Don't be mean. You should have been there on the promise of company and hospitality, not some conditional idea of the right food to serve.

This☝️☝️Surely the company/fun / catch up is the main reason why we spend time with friends 🤷‍♀️

I know, horrible fatty British lumps. I so yearn to be foreign.
