Friends promised a BBQ and delivered an Iceland beige buffet!

As above really, myself, DH and 3 DC went to our friends’ house yesterday on the promise of some drinks in the garden and a BBQ.

They said they were having issues with their BBQ so would do an ‘indoor BBQ’. This consisted of beige food from Iceland!!

AIBU to find this a woeful alternative?

I probably won’t rush to go round their house again - kind as they were.

I think it substantially changes the invitation. If I had invited people for a BBQ and then discovered that I had no BBQ and could not borrow one, I'd probably call them - on Friday night in this case, after discovering the BBQ was unavailable and before going shopping - and say they were still welcome but it's going to be Iceland buffet.

If money's not an issue, then my guess re why frozen party food is the logical fall back would because they can't cook apart from outdoor grilling, so it's either BBQ or pre-prepared. I'd have been disappointed too if there wasn't at least a good salad or some fresh vegetables, fruit, etc.

I think I’d consider my life was going pretty well, if this is what could constitute disappointment!

It might not be to your taste, but it was one evening, surely you can deal with that? Even if you were disappointed, were you really that upset that you'd take to MN to spout off about it in the hopes everyone would flag off your 'friends'.

You sound ungracious.

This. I would have been happy and grateful to have been invited somewhere. I would certainly not take someone up on their kind invite, and then come onto Mumsnet to berate and bash them.

Unpleasant behaviour @Bbqdisaster Hopefully they see this and never ask you again.

You are ridiculous. Hope that helps!

I'd be disappointed too, Icelands mozzarella sticks used to be like crack, now they're simply meh.

Christ you sound awful.

We were very much thankful when leaving yesterday and ensured they were aware we appreciated them hosting.

We did bring a load of drink, and one of DH’s posher bottle of wines was left behind unopened (I don’t drink the stuff, but I expect it cost a multiple of the food!). We also had a range crisps and snacks for the kids.

It's rare that people appear so stingy and ungrateful. How generous you didn't retrieve the wine.

You can be a host extraordinaire but not have basic decency and good manners.

I bet people roll their eyes when they get a dinner invite.

"I hope we don't all have to applaud when he brings out the trifle this time"

Katey83 · Yesterday 21:08

You sound ungrateful. If you go to someone's home and they host you, it is discourteous to whinge about it online. Not everyone has the same food preferences and if you are that picky, you shouldn't accept invitations.

GardenCovent · Yesterday 21:09

You are wanting to come across as you are superior to your “friends” due to their choice of food being beneath you where all you are doing as coming across as having no class whatsoever

mybeautifulemeraldparure · Yesterday 21:10

Can someone help me out? What is an "Iceland Beige Buffet"?

I don’t care about food, it’s about the company. I get it that most people would care about the food though. The idea of serving cheap buffet food is anathema to my husband who has a bit of a reputation as a host extraordinaire.

We have friends that invite us for dinner and serve food that’s barely edible. It’s become a bit of a private joke and my colleagues get excited if I tell them we’re seeing these friends at their house because they love to hear what food we were served. 😬

You sound like an utter cunt ... Laughing about your friends behind their backs and slagging them off to.colleagues.

Why do you even go if you hate them and their food so much.

DarkchocolateAndtea · Yesterday 21:11

😂 to the trifle, that created quite the picture, and lots of little "surprises" of "Oh it's just something prepped earlier", with domed metal lids.

MasterBeth · Yesterday 21:11

DarkchocolateAndtea · Yesterday 20:43

Yes I know. My comment was meant as in if she knew it was "beige" she wouldn't have gone, as clearly wasn't there for the company.

Again, read what the OP says. She makes no comment on the quality of the company. That's all in your head.

I think she means frozen party food such as cocktail sausages, sausage rolls, chicken strips, spring rolls, potato wedges, crisps etc.

Something like

Sausage rolls
Scotch eggs
Sandwiches
Cheese and pineapple
Charcuterie board
Chutneys
Baguettes
Crackers

-ish.

Exactly the same as a M+S picky bits afternoon but with cockney accents and fake tan.

likeafishneedsabike · Yesterday 21:14

Whatever you do, don’t invite them back. With friends like you, who needs enemies?

Scout2016 · Yesterday 21:14

I'm sure you would have found their BBQ food substandard if they'd done it, so at least you were saved that dissapointment.

Do them a favour - leave them alone and stick with fellow farm shop customers. You sound like the sort of person who will tell you they "sourced" things, instead of just bought them like the plebs do.
