AIBU to confiscate DS17s minoxidil

DS17 ordered a pack of minoxidil foam from amazon to trigger "beard growth for a goatee". AIBU to confiscate his minoxidil as I believe it is unnatural and unnecessary when his beard will naturally fill out. I'm very disappointed that he's wasting his money.

Yabvu. He's old enough to make his own choices, you can disagree but you can't control.

He's virtually an adult now. He's able to make his own decisions and will not appreciate you shoving your beak in.

He's hardly using hard drugs.

It's his money and his decision, you can't control all he does.

Let your teen make his own decisions about his appearance. You must make your's - without other adults controlling it.

Minoxidil is not harmful, so you really have not reason to behave this way. Are you generally this contrilling?

Don’t be stupid. Unless you think it’s an actual safety hazard or illegal substance you can’t confiscate things from a 17 year old like he’s 7. The money is spent either way, it’s up to him to decide if it was a waste and that’s how he’ll learn.

Is it safe ? Seems to have a few side effects that would put me off. Also it appears to be very poisonous to cats even from it getting on pillows etc. So if you have a cat I think you would be justified in saying he can't use it.
But as a general principle I don't think you can confiscate something a 17 year old has bought, you can only voice your concerns and let him make up his own mind. (with the exception of the cat situation where I think you can say no to it's use)

Well he’s already spent the money, it’s gone, so why stop him using it? It would be a far bigger waste if he spent the money then didn’t even get to try it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yanbu. I have a son a year younger and I’d be doing the same. Just have to be patient for puberty and time to do its thing.

I think it is a good idea to take it off him at least for now and do some research.

I've been following some hair loss/transformation stuff and started using minoxidil for female pattern thinning.

On some men's threads the comments are asking if their bits are still in working order when using the drugs. I don't know about the side effects of minoxidil specifically or the side effrcts for a youngster but I would talk to your teen to discuss - it's not worth any risk of hormonal disfunction /effect on his sexual development as a young person to get a fuller beard quicker.

I'd have safety concerns about a 17 year old using minoxodil off label personally, and even bigger ones about him having obtained it from Amazon, where it could be anything - so would certainly be communicating that as a matter of urgency and letting him know the potential side effects - hair growth in unwanted areas, or his hands if he doesn't clean them properly afterwards, dry skin and irritation, acne, potential cardiovascular effects.

Facial hair is still developing at 17, this isn't something he needs to be using. If he or you suspect there is a genuine medical issue with lack of testosterone affecting his development then he should just see the GP.

Of course YANBU, and whilst you’re at it, make him sit on the naughty step for 20 mins!

I've not heard of that particular brand but an old neighbour of ours (not now but back on the farm) , husband bought something similar without telling a soul. Well anyway she thought it was salt and sprinkled some over her porridge for 2 months and to cut a long story short went on to be the UK's first Bearded Women (1965) and travelled around in the circus for the next 10 years and made a fortune. The point I am making is that there ARE substances out there which will promote hair growth regardless of gender and you must be careful

Is it any different from girls spending money on wax strips, nail varnish, false eyelashes, a whole load of slap that looks ridiculous? Or older ladies from dying their hair, getting their nails done? Spending money on creams and lotions and potions? Not really.

If there was reasonable potential that the product could cause hormonal disruption and affect their sexual development then I suggest you should.

Why on earth would you confiscate it? It’s not particularly harmful if used correctly (which is sounds like he intends to) and he’d basically and adult at this point! He may have sparse hair as some men do.

Was this before or after you had a tasteful menu smeared with food so you could get the idea of texture etc presented to you in a restaurant but it was okay because it had a layer of clear plastic over it? 🤣
