Husband has ruined dinner

I’m been upstairs packing for a holiday so asked husband to cook dinner, all of the ingredients for a shepards pie are in the fridge/cupboard.
Came down and thought.. That smells nothing like shepards pie. He has poured an entire jar of Passata and half a jar of parsley into the meat.
Im going to beans on toast. My AIBU is this..
YABU.. Sounds fine to me.
YANBU.. He has made bolognese with mash potatoes and gravy.

Yes…though tbf no one sensible bothers with dried parsley.

Why don’t you knock up a quick roast for your family, OP or maybe a nice homemade fish pie or something? Show him how it’s done 😀

We have a drawer full of jars/tubs of spices, then boxes of bagged spices bought in bulk, because the jars are a bit small if you cook lots. But it has honestly never occurred to me to look for or buy dried parsley. It comes in big fresh bunches.

As for the display in supermarkets, I normally know which one I'm after, so don't pay attention to the others, unless arranged to spell an amusing word.

I'm sorry @OnAJetPlane26, et al, because I seem to be fixated on the 'jar of parsley' conundrum, so I would be very grateful if you would be kind enough to answer a question about it for me OP: 🫠

When you referred to a jar of parsley in your Opening Paragraph, were you referring to parsley that was already made into a sauce, or something similar, that comes in a largish jar, ready to add to a recipe?

Or did you, perhaps, mean those little glass jars of dried herbs and spices, that are sold in most British supermarkets? I hope that my question is reasonably understandable OP, and that you know which small glass jars, or plastic pots, containing a multitude of dried herbs and spices, that I am talking about?

Anyway, after all of that @OnAJetPlane26, I don't think that I would like, or even want to try, the strange concoction that your husbsnd ended up cooking, so I hope you enjoyed your beans! 💐

The instructions were "make a shepherds pie", it's not as if he was given a recipe to follow.

The ingredients he used are ones that are used in a shepherds pie, but he has seemingly used too much of two of them (certainly for OP's tastes).

Agree. Of all the dried herbs, its the one that you can get away with using a large quantity.

I've got some in my kitchen right now but I still didn't get the "parsley in a jar" thing. I just think if it as dried parsley. I don't see the spice containers as jars. To me a jar is for pickles or pesto or whatever. I'm pretty sure the other commenters must be thinking similar.

He's just made a different dish with the ingredients you showed him, and added his own as well. This isn't an episode of Chopped, so he's not going to get dinged for using too many pantry ingredients rather than focusing on the basket. You are perfectly within your rights to refuse the food and have something else if you are sure you won't like it, but unreasonable to assume it is objectively bad or to grump about it when you haven't even tasted it.

I made something similar years ago for a group of Americans staying at our church. Called it Italian Shepherds Pie. They loved it. But no parsley.

Have I missed a post where the OP showed him the ingredients? I thought she just said that they had the ingredients in the cupboards/fridge, and left him to it?

And none of the ingredients are atypical for a shepherds pie, though the amounts might be.

I seem to have confused a lot of people with the wording Jar of parsley. I’ve posted a picture of what I mean, would most people not describe this as a jar?

I did try some of my husband’s so I know I didn’t like it. Bit harsh to call me a brat, I didn’t throw my plate on the floor and demand a new dinner. I simply said.. Babe why have you made Shepards pie taste like spaghetti bolognaise, I’ll have beans on toast instead. Is that really that bad in your eyes?!?

I quite like Jamaican shepherd’s pie that uses either sweet potato or yam for the topping and coconut milk and jerk seasoning for the filling.

Wotzits and mayo sandwiches sound great to me.

It contained some sweet stuff as well: not so great having pudding in a mostly savory offering!

I don’t eat lamb but that sounds pretty good!

Because your dh made the effort to cook dinner. It might not be what you thought it would be but you wouldn’t have appreciated if your dh made a similar comment to you and you were tge one cooking.
