AIBU - to ask you for your worst girl and boy names

Asking on behalf of DD who is expecting. What are in your view the worst girl and boy names. for me they are the made up ones like Nevaeh and Jayden

Names that are just sounds like Isla or Ava.

Double barrelled names especially where the second name is May or Mae

Anything that rhymes with Jayden

Callum, Collin, Liam

Any boys name that is common such as James, George, Tom, Ben

I love these threads but I like to give a disclaimer that if your name/your child’s name is on here it’s not personal, I’m sure it suits, it’s just my preference.

Names with a unique/alternate spelling (feels obvious)-
Khloe, Mickayla, Alyse, Kayden.

Short names-
Amy, Kai, Mia, Eve etc.

Overused or ‘dull’ (to me personally!) names-
James, Jack, Luke, Ryan etc.
Emma, Emily, Lily, Rose, Olivia etc.

Masculine names on girls-
Charlie, Billie, James etc.

American outdoorsy boys names-
Hunter, Gunner, Guage, Boone.

Misc-
Angel, Pixie, Posy, Daisy, Lola, Coco.
Wayne, Roy, Edmund, Sawyer.

I have quite a feminine naming preference I like longer and more ‘frilly’ names with a vintage or literary feel. I am also very picky.

Ellie-May is a character in a book by Erskine Caldwell, written in the 30’s I think. (Don’t quote me on that 🤣)
The book is called Tobacco Road and it’s about the Depression in America.
Ellie-May has a hair lip and her father despairs of ever marrying her off.

I do agree with you, though. I am really not keen on Evie-Grace, Lilly-May etc.

I encountered a Tarzan in Chiswick Waitrose a few years ago.

I'm sure most of the children with names people don't like are lovely, but i just feel sorry for girls lumbered with that name...obviously just my opinion as i know there have been plenty named this in the past decade. I can't tell you exactly why i don't like it, it just seems an abrupt, harsh name and the connotations with oily round balls probably doesn't help.

I hate the word chav but I know a woman who was a big stereotype of the early 00s chav culture and had a daughter when she was 16 and called her Chardonnay. People were horrified by the name.
She brought her up really well and everyone assumed it wouldn’t be too bad as it could be shortened to maybe Char or maybe she’d grow up and change it to Charlotte.
Anyway Chardonnay is now in her 20s, has never shortened her name, she is fiercely intelligent, a model so she absolutely stunning, adores her mum and appreciates the youth and opportunities she sacrificed for her daughter and therefore wears her name as a badge of honour as she feels it represents the story, has a bit of a vintage rockstar kind of look going for her so absolutely owns the name!

The American trend of giving girls really ugly names, like Winslow and Collins or Scottie. Or city names such as London.

There is one modern name I have a particular grievance against but that is for a practical reason.

A few years ago I supported a software system used by a large hospital. One of the things it was used for, every month certain patient data was extracted in to a comma-separated file which was then used to create a spreadsheet report. This had been working successfully for a long time until one day I got a call from my contact there who said that it was failing to extract one patient's name successfully. Instead of the expected forename it was just outputting 1, as in the number one.

Anyway I investigated and it turned out this was a child called True! When you put True in to a cell in the Excel spreadsheet it changed it to the value 1!

I sorted it eventually but was exclaiming in some incredulity to the rest of the office about someone naming their child True. A younger colleague informed me that one of the Kardashian clan had done this, hence perhaps it becoming a potentially popular name. I just think of all these children destined to go round breaking people's spreadsheets. Glad I am retired!

Tiffany was originally short for Theophania, centuries ago, so Typhanie is a fine way to spell it.

I know a boy called Teddy. Wonder how he’ll feel about that when he’s older.

Aren’t Precious, Blessed and Angel normally Afro-Caribbean names? We have one in our dental surgery and I’ve always thought it was such a positive naming, and there was a Blessing elsewhere who won a celebrity show. What an amazing name, your parents see you as their blessing or blessed

I have an 87 year old uncle in law called Teddy, he likes it just fine. Teddy Roosevelt managed ok too.

Angel is a little harder to live up to of course

Elae pronounced LA then moans nobody can pronounce her name or they think her name only has 2 letters. I hate made up names there just a bit try hard. They think they gave them a unique names then loads of others have the same name. Bambi and Minnie has to be one of the worst poor child.

A mother on this morning think she’s a singer named her baby Forever Sugar. I also hate it when they change it slightly. I know one mum who liked Olivia which is lovely but thought it was too common. So changed the O to an A so she’s Alivia that child will be forever correcting people. If you like the name just name that name ffs.

I had an African tour guide named Clever - it suited him so well

I'd never really thought of those names in that context before, but as a retired teacher yes I agree they can sound annoying.

Honestly OP, I wouldn't know where to start.

Why doesn't she post some she is thinking about, like most people do, and then the negativity is targeted and useful.

I knew a woman called Comfort, she was Nigerian, and although I’d never use it I always thought it was lovely.

I love James, Jack, Emily, Rose and Edmund.

To me that's the genre of name to aim for if you want to give them something that won't be a problem.

Chill - it has a practical purpose and is quite fun to see the breadth of views. I really liked the uplifting Chardonnay story
