AIBU to expect people to reset gym equipment after changing settings?

AIBU to think that if your taking part in an organised gym class (think HITT, Hyrox etc) that if you change the equipment setting to do something else (because of injury or whatever) you should reset it before you move on?

For example the manual treadmill, is set to do a sled push on it, you’ve an injury so you run instead. Do you leave it on run (even through the instructor has told everyone to do sled push) or reset to run before you move on

YABU - it’s your job to check the settings before you start using the machine

YANBU - the instructor set it to one setting and told everyone what to do, if you change it. You change it back before moving on.

Honestly, so many people will use the equipment on different settings id always assume it was on me to check it's on the correct one.

I’d agree with this.

Beer3000 · 21/08/2026 23:07

I don't see a problem with this. They change it once, you change it once. Why should they change it twice and you never?

I have to admit though, I probably would change it back, if it was me.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/08/2026 23:10

I'd never use any equipment without checking the settings myself first in any case - it's just not worth the risk - although, tbh, I'd settle for them at least attempting to wipe their sweat off occasionally.

Fieldday26 · 22/08/2026 08:05

Even in a class with routine set by the instructor? So 9 out of the 10 people in the class are using the machine on the same setting and you’re the only one that’s changing it? HITT is super fast rotations so you just get on and try and run / sled push etc.

It would be a nice thing to do but I’d always expect to check the settings when getting on any machine, even in a class.
Depending on what stations/exercises are being used in the class, there might be various adjustments people have made, either to machines or equipment, to adjust for fitness, injury, strength, height etc.

I'd be very mildly irritated I had to change it but accept that it's one of those things. Only takes a few seconds

I know someone who gets annoyed that their partner prefers a different setting on the showerhead to them and thinks it should be changed back to their preference as the default rather than cracking on and changing it back to their preferred setting when they use it just like their partner has to do. Some people think they are the main character in life and shouldn't be inconvenienced

Ah yeah, I don’t think this in a 50/50 two people situation or obviously in the open normal gym etc.

rainbowbee9 · 22/08/2026 09:07

Nope. You're likely going to change it anyway. Just set it to what you want and workout. Otherwise you'll find yourself being chronically annoyed whenever you're there.

Though it does piss me off when blokes leave 4/5 plates on the bar and I have to move them as they are ridiculously heavy!

IwanttoWFH · 22/08/2026 09:09

If the instructor knows one person needs the treadmill amended, I’d expect them to change it back for the next person. Especially if it’s circuits and they’re just standing there, giving instructions or supervising.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · 22/08/2026 09:10

In the classes I attend the RX would be different for men/women training to compete/non compete etc so would be noted for those wanting it and everyone adjusts as they go.

MerryUmberHedgehog · 22/08/2026 09:10

YABU for worrying about something so trivial. If you are that worried ask the instructor to tell everyone.

tulippa · 22/08/2026 09:11

I don't think most people are getting what the OP is saying. This is not a normal gym situation where everyone is just doing what they fancy.

Hie do you know what the normal setting is maybe everyone is sleding ?

I think they do get it but don’t agree with the OP.

daffodilandtulip · 22/08/2026 09:16

I don’t reset the weights machines, but things with free weights on, I remove before I leave it. I always check/change cardio machines before I start (but I thought most of them reset?)

Simonjt · 22/08/2026 09:18

Things like treadmills just leave on the setting you’ve used as you’ve no idea what the next person wants to do. Manual things, put them back to 0-the lowest kg.

If its a class/organised hiit etc, put the equipment how the instructor intends it if you’ve personalised it.

dustabsorber · 22/08/2026 09:20

Council gym, many don't even wipe the equipment after use

Wadsworthy · 22/08/2026 09:40

Sled push on a treadmill?

this intrigues me more than having to make a quick adjustment to a machine in the 15-20 seconds of a HIIT change over.

But my gym has two sled tracks so never an issue.

I do understand. I just don’t agree. It’s no problem to just reset equipment to one’s own effort level on each HIIT rotation. I do it all the time in a HIITclass.

pimplebum · 22/08/2026 09:12

Because one station is run, the next is sled etc. So you run, then she says rotate and then you ski erg, then sled push for example, but then someone can’t run for what ever reason so they change the run station so push and you get on try to run and it’s on the push setting.

Yes.

It's my physical safety.

Merrybandofpirates · 22/08/2026 12:12

I don’t think most people understand what a HIIT class is, or the etiquette. If you change the setting from what the instructor has set up then you put it back before you move on. It goes so fast, and everyone is meant to do what’s been set up at each station without worrying about changing things that if someone does mess with the settings, it can screw up the workout flow for everyone. You have to change it back. That’s the rule in every HIIT class I’ve ever gone to, in lots of different gyms.

Fieldday26 · 22/08/2026 15:14

For the people not understanding the type of machines I mean. These are them, you set the tension depending on whether you are running, walking, pushing etc
