Looking for outside perspective Modeling for my artist son’s project

To give context, I'm not upset, angry, or uncomfortable with my son. He's 19, extremely professional about his art, and it's a serious passion/side gig for him. He's painted me a couple of times over the years, as well as his siblings and other models. Last year he did his first artistic nude painting (with a professional model) and it turned out genuinely amazing. I’m really proud of his talent and work ethic

Yesterday, he pitched his next project to me. It's a 6 to 8 painting series focused on women in their mid 40s, specifically centered around me. He showed me the rough sketches and explained his vision, and honestly, I was really impressed.
Here's the thing he mentioned that 2 or 3 of the pieces in the series would involve partial nudity. He explained the artistic reason behind it, but was also super respectful and immediately told me that if I'm not comfortable with it, there is zero pressure and we don't have to do it. He just asked me to think about it

I talked to my husband about it, and he told me he supports whatever decision I make

I personally don't feel weird or offended by his request because I know the context, I understand his process as an artist, and I trust him completely. But because it's a situation you don't run into every day, I wanted to post here and get some neutral, outside thoughts.

Dear god no wonder this place is a perves paradise
MNHQ happy to encourage it
Never forget it's all about the clicks
Cant fund overnight moderation so trolls and weirdos can post stuff including CSA images but lol we'll leave up some weirdos wank fodder for your titillation

Lentilcakes · 19/08/2026 06:52

I can see the poster has been banned but my 22 yr old DS said ‘urghhh’!’ when he accidentally saw my boobs the other day (came out of my room to turn landing light off when going to bed and he was right there - thought he was in his room!). No way would he want to see me naked!!

TheresDirtInTheYurt · 19/08/2026 07:05

@HopeMumsnet what on EARTH is the reasoning behind leaving this thread up, which was obviously created for the sole purpose of titillating someone with an incest fetish? Nobody on this thread is discussing the pros and cons of nude life modelling as a general concept, and surely anybody who wants to do that can create a thread for that purpose.
So many threads where people actually ARE discussing serious issues in a reasoned way that may be helpful for another person, disappear because the OP turned out to be a troll. But this one, inexplicably, is felt to be making such an exceptional contribution to the site that it's going to stay up.
MMHQ has become a really weird place lately.

Your son wants you to model for him, nude?? Err no.

Agreed.

Evaka · 19/08/2026 07:58

Poppingby · 18/08/2026 12:51

What's his vision anyway?

For me a 19 year old man doing a series on women in their 40s is pretty fucking patronising. That's before you get to the nudity. Of his mum. Perhaps an explanation of his artistic vision will change my mind?

Hahahahja. Nailed i lt.

Error404FucksNotFound · 19/08/2026 08:06

Your son wants to do a collection of you and he wants you nude for half of them?

I have two sons. They would rather pop out their eyeballs with a poo knife and dip them in bleach than have me pose naked in 3 different positions for their 'art'.

It is as weird as fuck.

Error404FucksNotFound · 19/08/2026 08:09

Urgh. Just seen its a troll.
And mumsnet wants to keep the thread so we can discuss the pros and cons of our kids seeing us naked if they call it art.

Fabulous decision.

I can hear the squelchy fapping of a thousand perverts with their mums knickers over their heads.

nomorekitchenislandsplease · 19/08/2026 08:44

Venusunbroken · 19/08/2026 06:33

Wow, mumsnet already posted to say it wasn’t,

Do you always read every single post in a thread that seems fake? I only read the OP's posts , in this case just one.

titchy · 19/08/2026 08:50

Well it’s an original topic from a brand new poster, so I’ll give them that….

OtterlyAstounding · 19/08/2026 09:05

Well, thanks to this thread I've learnt about Lucian Freud, who was clearly an incestuous, sick bastard.

And If this is real (hmm), then no, don't let your son paint you partially nude, what the fuck. Talk about an Oedipus complex (which, very appropriately, Lucian Freud's equally unappealing grandfather coined).

Rollercoaster1920 · 19/08/2026 09:12

Liz Hurley (and her son?).

YowieeF · 19/08/2026 09:47

Great idea, think it’s quite wonderful he wants to do this.

Gossipisgood · 19/08/2026 10:56

When you say partial nude do you mean you'd be nude but have things strategically placed to cover your bits? or would you have underwear on or covers of some kind? I think if you weren't totally nude & didn't feel uncomfortable then go for it but if you'd be completely nude then it's very weird you'd even consider it tbh. Even more weird is your Son asking you if it is expected you'd be completely nude when he could have another model the same age & not his Mum.

crackofdoom · 19/08/2026 10:59

Sartre · 18/08/2026 12:42

Haha ultimate dig there… well done. I’m certain he could find a woman who looks a bit like you and live out his Freudian fantasies that way.

You're aware that Lucian Freud and Sigmund Freud are different people?

Gossipisgood · 19/08/2026 11:00

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 18/08/2026 12:35

I'm an artist. If everyone involved is happy with it, it's fine. No matter what any outsiders say or think.

See Lucian Freud's nudes of his daughters. Etc.

I find some of the poses his Daughters were in quite disturbing considering it was their Father painting them. why did he feel the need to paint his Daughters in such an intimate way?

Danlsb · 19/08/2026 14:51

I do think it’s a bit sad how everything gets turned into automatically being weird or over sexualised. Many artist paint nudes and sometimes people they know can be a cheaper easier option if money is tight. Partial nudity does not necessarily mean he will be looking at her private areas - she could be from behind or have a sheet/props covering her modesty. Frankly the clothes and swimwear people seem to wear nowadays can have more on show than a partial nude painting.

JoeSikoraTommysStory · 19/08/2026 15:03

Absolutely fucking not!

IdaGlossop · 19/08/2026 15:09

crackofdoom · 19/08/2026 10:59

Related though. Perhaps they had an incestuous relationship.

Bigcat25 · 19/08/2026 15:31

Absolute no. A big boundary crossing and it could hurt both of you professionally.

Lurkingandlearning · 19/08/2026 16:46

I think you would get more informed opinions from other artists. Maybe contact an art school or two. I also think you would get very different answers from people from the countries where people are relaxed about family nudity.

tomatoplants · 19/08/2026 16:49

define partial nudity.

personally though I wouldn’t do any form with my son

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 19/08/2026 16:49

why has he decided to make an art project focused on his semi nude mother? It would be a definite no from me. An odd request.

Taztoy · 19/08/2026 16:49

Why is this being allowed to stand? Weird.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/08/2026 17:37

Well I didn’t think I was a prude til I read this thread

I wouldn’t even let my adult DAUGHTER paint me in the altogether 😱

Eumaybe · 19/08/2026 20:54

Naked children??
No sorry, no amount of « This is art » will make this ever acceptable.
