My MIL and step-FIL visited us about a month ago while DH was away (I posted about this already, but in a different context). It was awful, I felt like I was being punished the whole stay with a lot of passive-aggressive jibes. Notably, during that time, MIL took me aside and told me off for being "jealous" of my husband's attention towards the baby, apparently assuming this was why I'd been upset with him around my birthday. The following day, she then explicitly asked me about our sex life. She then said that if she'd been "all shredded down there," she wouldn't want to have sex either and that I would lose my husband's interest if I didn't. She knew I'd had very severe tearing during birth. I found this incredibly insensitive and insulting, particularly given how vulnerable I've been this year.

I told DH about it when he got back, but he spent the following weeks avoiding confronting his mum.

Yesterday, he finally decided to speak to her by phone to set the record straight, which I was not expecting.

He actually went into the conversation trying to take some responsibility himself, saying that perhaps he'd miscommunicated something about an argument we had just before they arrived and that I was not a jealous person. Instead of asking what had happened or trying to understand why I was upset, MIL got very heightened, categorically denied saying any of it, and immediately turned the conversation around to how hurt she was by me.

She said she's miserable and depressed, that we don't care about her, that she only ever tries to be my friend and I make her feel unwelcome. Step-FIL then joined in, saying they'd both apparently been "extra nice" to me during their visit because of the argument. MIL eventually agreed that she would speak to me to make amends.

Shortly afterwards, she sent DH a very long text message saying she was hurt beyond belief, was not going to apologize for something that didn't happen, that all I wanted was to drive a rift in the family, that she is generous and kind, and that everything I'd said had never happened and was all made up.

Step-FIL then messaged DH saying he needed to call him first thing this morning.

DH spoke to him this morning, and he continued to deny everything for both of them, saying there may have been a "misunderstanding" and that MIL was simply very hurt. However, it seemed maybe there was some conceding on his half about crossed wires, which was positive, but unsure why he had to step in.

However, shortly after that call, MIL sent DH a complete tirade of messages, listing everything I've apparently ever done wrong since 2016, calling me a liar and saying that all he has done is hurt her because he has listened to my lies. She also said she "doesn't want to live anymore" because of all this and shes never going to see her grandson again.

What I find really odd, is that all the things I find difficult about her - like I can't seem to have a proper conversation with her, she sends a message, I respond, but she never responds back. Doesn't respond to baby photos. Makes me feel super unwelcome by pretending I'm not in room, etc. She has turned back on me again, saying I do these things to her.

At no point has she acknowledged what she said to me, apologised, or even shown any curiosity or concern about why I was upset.

DH is absolutely devastated. He feels like he's lost his safe space with his mum because he genuinely believed he could speak to her honestly and have a reasonable conversation.

What's particularly upsetting is that DH wasn't even attacking her. He was trying to address something that had happened a month ago and explain why it had upset me, especially with my PPD. Somehow the entire conversation has become about how badly she has been treated, with everything being denied and turned back onto me. It's literally all become about her.

This seems like such a crazy escalation. I'm struggling to know how to interpret this reaction, but it seems very manipulative and cruel towards my husband.

@GreenAcreFarm22
Just block these two chunks of cancerous human misery completely from your life, you deserve better than continual deliberate misery
DH will eventually soon be having the scales falling from his eyes about his twisted vicious mother when he still initially tries with her
As there's that shitty stupid saying about blood been thicker than water
But if he thinks about it he'll do as you're going to
Aren't you??????

I played this rodeo with ex mil - even tried live bombing her.

Great typo!

😂😂 should have full on atomic bombed - her tbf she’d survive it and still have a fag in her gob with a glass of red!

BettyBoh · 19/08/2026 19:25

This is classic narcissistic behaviour.

DaisyChain505 · 19/08/2026 19:38

Your husband needs to stop running to mummy everytime he’s a bit annoyed at you.

Your husband needs to be as infuriated as you are at the things his mum has said to you.

Your husband needs to make it extremely clear that the way she’s treated you isn’t going to be tolerated.

You need to stop seeing her, especially when your husband isn’t even there. Why would you host someone you clearly don’t get along with alone? Surely you’d communicate with your husband that you’re not willing to do it given the history between the two of you.

You can’t win with people like this. Cut her from your life, tell your husband he can continue his relationship with her but you don’t want to hear about it. Protect your peace and your family and stop playing into this drama.

Isitevensummer · 19/08/2026 20:16

Any time there's a suggestion that Someone is suicidal like this, it's a sign of extreme manipulation. No one reasonable would act like that. As a pp said , you can't reason with the unreasonable.

Pinkbananaa · 19/08/2026 20:26

She sounds like my dm. Completely manpulative and rotten to the core. You cant reason with a narcassist. Ive since gone nc for my own peace.

Treemouse · 19/08/2026 20:45

Ewwww who are these mums who are advocating for their sons to get a shag from their post partum partners?!! Why are they thinking about that and why do they care? It’s so weird!
that aside - you’ve been treated terribly OP. I agreed with pps that your MIL is a narcissist and unfortunately you aren’t ever going to be able to reason with her - especially as she is being enabled by step FIL

Tuesdayschild50 · 19/08/2026 21:15

She is extremely manipulative responding in these ways.
If anyone is driving a wedge its the parents and she seems to have step father backing her up .
For the sake of your own family look after the 3 of you and take some space away from them that really is the right thing to do .
This behaviour needs to be stopped your husband is a grown man and doesn't need to be spoken to by his step father in that way either who do they think they are.

Foolish1984 · 19/08/2026 21:46

Wait is this the creepy step-FIL who keeps trying to change your baby’s nappy?

Kokonimater · 19/08/2026 22:01

It’s funny how she denied saying anything to you then contacts your husband with a list of all your wrongdoings. Which really proves that she has a very negative opinion of you. Shot herself in the foot there.
she must be avoided at all costs. And be wary of how she speaks to your children if she thinks there’s no one around.
She’s the sort that would slip little comments to the children about you if she gets the chance.
She’s a narcissist and your husband’s been the golden child.

AtlasCedar · 19/08/2026 22:21

Honestly I’d just get your husband to say if that’s how she feels then that’s that but that the conversation is no longer constructive and so you won’t be engaging in it. And leave it there. Both of you withdraw and if they tantrum about it just say that you won’t continue to have contact when the tone is destructive.

pollyglot · 19/08/2026 23:58

I beg you, don't engage further. This is my MIL to a T, except she said, when I told her of the second DC on the way, she said "Bloody kids, can't get away from them." She had no other DGC, had no interest in the first one. She was a vile person and I never spoke to her again after DC3 and some other truly horrible stuff. It does your head in.

Millie2008 · 20/08/2026 00:18

She sounds like my mum. She’s a narcissist- I’d suggest reading up on it. I have been no contact for 5 years. This ended up being the only solution for me. They don’t change. So sorry you’re going this.

anon666 · 20/08/2026 00:39

She's got issues and obviously needs very careful handling.

Dh can and probably should try to repair and forge some sort of relationship - if he wants to.

But stay away and try to see this as potential future bullet avoidance.

canklesmctacotits · 20/08/2026 01:11

You can never win with people like this, because their entire raison d’être is to be the winner. They will lie, cheat, steal, cry, whine, be aggressive, be pathetic - anything, whatever it takes to be the winner. You’re being naive in harping on about truth/lies, right/wrong. All of that is secondary to her being The Winner.

GreenAcreFarm22 · 20/08/2026 03:12

Thank you for all the replies. It has escalated so much that now she is sending my husband incessant messages saying I am mentally ill, dividing her from the family, and he needs to leave me and not allow me near my DS, posting this on social media too. She has stated publicly that she has removed me from her life as I am a mentally ill person.

We have not responded to all the messages. I don't think there is any return from this. It's like she is self-fulfilling a prophecy and narrative that does not exist. I don't think I could ever trust this around my DS or be in the same room as someone who has said these things. It's very, very sad.

Classic DARVO by MIL.

DARVO stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It is a manipulative psychological tactic used by wrongdoers or abusers when held accountable for their behavior. Instead of accepting responsibility, the perpetrator denies the action, attacks the credibility of the person confronting them, and turns themselves into the victim

Nailed it. Exactly this.

She sounds impossible, OP. I'd go as low contact as possible, personally.

I think @Vaxtable has given you the best advice, block her and focus on your life and family. It's up to your DH how/if he wants to maintain a relationship with her just tell him to stop giving you any updates about her or what she has said or done.

MammaJ14 · 20/08/2026 04:19

yeah that woman is a manipulative narcissist. at a guess your husband is very easy going and accomodating. why because he grew up knowing that she was not a safe person to be around. i would give her a wide birth and never have her around you again alone. always ensure there is someone with you to back you up as i guarantee she will lie play victim and threaten suicide just to avoid responsibility for their behaviour

Sugargliderwombat · 20/08/2026 04:39

Bunnyofhope · 18/08/2026 01:13

DH obviously feels like he has/d a decent relationship with his mum, so leave him to it. She will still see the gdc, but without you, which sounds like a blessing for you. She sounds very tricky, but honestly your DH bringing up this on the phone after a month to set the record straight, was never going to go well.

No way would my children be seeing a liar like this without me when DH is such a coward it took him a MONTH to speak to her about her behaviour.

SixAndJuliet · 20/08/2026 04:57

You personally shouldn’t reply to any messages because the situation has gone past that now. Just be calm and disengage. Your DH must be devastated, don’t put any extra pressure on him. He will see for himself you are not mentally ill and the actions of his mum are not reasonable. He will probably want to mend the situation with his mum at some point although it sounds impossible now. I feel for him.

Rufusisturnedon · 20/08/2026 05:05

The phrase true colours springs to mind. Or perhaps she’s “ mentally ill” whatever she means by this.

awful for you and husband too.

So sorry. It's so hurtful when you try and deal with issues like a normal human being and get met with deranged behaviour. Her ego is more important than any reparative work.

I cut off my cousin for saying untrue things about me. She also employed classic DARVO. Her mum was the same and cast a long shadow over my childhood and self belief. She had bullied my mum for her whole life and my mum had zero idea of normal boundaries or relationships (ended up with my dad, who has no emotional fluency whatsoever). My MIL does a good DARVO too.

As a menopausal woman with teens I am fucking done with insane behaviour from narcissists.

Given what we now know about MiL, calling him a coward seems a bit harsh. Yeah, sure, he took time to work out what to say, or to muster the courage, but we can see why. He’s grown up with that….. The important thing is he did, and we can see why he delayed. Her response says it all.

@GreenAcreFarm22

It does sounds like DARVO.

Frillysweetpea · 20/08/2026 08:40

Just seen your latest update and I am so shocked. Particularly going public on SM with all this. Your MIL is completely bonkers and extremely vindictive and cruel. It does look like you will have to go NC with her personally. Obviously your DH is devastated but is he remaining supportive of you? Does he want contact? Does he want MIL to have contact with your DC? I would not be keen on either in your shoes but recognise you may have to tolerate it; you cant impose on him and he may want/need to keep a vestige of a relationship. I do hope you can be there for each other through this - thinking of you.
