AIBU to think that the amount of processed snacks people buy in their grocery shopping is getting ridiculous? Watching people share their grocery shop on instagram etc and I can’t see what meals they can even make as it’s all snacks?? And then they say oh grocery shopping is so expensive!Do people really do this? I don’t buy any biscuits, fizzy drinks (18-20 pack slabs) or crisps as a part of me weekly family shop. I buy the meat, veg and pantry items. That is my weekly shopping. I buy one packet of oat bars for my DCs lunches. If my dc want a snack they have fruit, yogurt, homemade flapjacks etc.

And what's the problem with the word "snack"? It's not exactly a new word and I feel it describes something that needs a term: a small quantity of food that is eaten outsided regular larger meals. It's even hard to describe it without returning to the word "snack". Apparenly it's been in use since the 18th century!

What would the objectors like us to use instead??

An eyeballed recipe is where you just bung the ingredients into a bowl, give it a brisk whisk, chuck it in the oven, and pop in on a cooling rack, and see the joy on your family's faces as they can't wait to munch on their sweet treats after a delicious and nutritious supper.

Tbf, I'd eat the OP's flapjacks.

Yes this…it’s a trial and error process. I could make them with my eyes closed at this stage.

Watch out, it's the snack police!

Good for you. Some of us like snacks and don't care what you think. Crisps a few time a week, why not. A sweet treat each day, yes please.

Why are you so invested in other people? Doesn't seem healthy to me.

Shopping and eating habits affect everyone in society. You can only eat the processed snacks because wider society lets you.

That’s why it’s interesting to think about how other people eat.

Instagram is not real life. It's curated bullshit designed for engagement. If showing loads of snacks gets rage bait engagement then that's what they'll do.

Why are you watching people unpack shopping?

The most boring hobby I've ever heard of 😂
And this in a world where golf exists

godmum56 · 17/08/2026 14:46

It bores me unpacking my own shopping, why would I want to look at someone else's

yeah but all sport is duller than watching paint dry

Turtlebed · 17/08/2026 14:50

Feels a little judgy OP. It's obviously a complicated issue, and isn't just as straight forward as people should just eat healthier foods. Some people, including me find life quite hard and have a fair amount of things to overcome, so forgive us our snacks!

JenLxxx · 17/08/2026 14:54

oh bore off and mind your own business

All these posters saying "why do you care?". I care because I care about the general health of the population. It matters. And yes I know that you can be healthy and eat some processed snacks. But I think that in a significant number of cases people eat badly and it is a problem.

I don't see the point though in caring about something you can't do anything about as you can't control what others eat

If you look at how much junk food is sold in supermarkets, I'd say that's ridiculous... aisles of sweets, crisps, chocolates and so on. Junk food is designed to be addictive, it gives us sugar rushes, it's cheap and sometimes people will have it to perk themselves up after a bad day. Some people can't or won't cook, whether it's because they can't be bothered, or because they don't have time after work.

You would have approved of my (expensive) basket earlier. It looked terribly healthy (mushrooms, kale, chicken, etc.). It even had dates in <preens>... which are going to be used to make sticky toffee puddings later.

VanquishedColston · 17/08/2026 15:10

Lol OP I wish I could say this wasn't my shopping trolley, but it is 🙈
Even when I think I've bought stuff for meals it turns out I've missed some essential ingredient of the meal out 🙄
Dreadful meal planner and shopper.

MrsEmmelineLucas · 17/08/2026 15:15

Hang on, you go online and watch people unpack their shopping?

Loulou4022 · 17/08/2026 15:16

I’m not bothered about what other people do I’m too busy filling my trolley full of my snacks!!

Ok. Wider society/ companies/ government. Lots of factors. But I'm glad we have choice personally.

I do broadly agree OP. I think for a lot of people, they buy 'products' that barely resemble food. People have less time unfortunately and two working parents or one working single parent does not fit well with learning about food, cooking from scratch or doing any activity that isn't essential.

I do buy some snacks, such as rice cakes for when I want to just grab something quick while working from home, but in the main I buy ingredients. I have the privilege of being childfree and working from home though.

And I've not eaten meat for 31 years.

Oh piss off with the working mum shaming.
Most of us manage to cook just fine.
Actually research indicates children of working mums eat better due to available funds.

that's like saying there's no point caring about eg poverty.

there are policies and education that can help. we might not be able to do much individually but collectively as a society we can.

NC9000 · 17/08/2026 15:26

OP, this thread is very strange like you're trying to 'out' people who buy or eat snacks.

Why do you even care?

Do you want us to protest against Walkers crisps or McVitie's or what is the issue?

Apparently eating between meals makes you a lesser person, hence they find the term “snack” so objectionable.

TrugFullofLove · 17/08/2026 11:07

OP, if you have a recipe for properly healthy flapjacks I'd been keen to see it.
To me they all seem like sugar disguised as healthy eating for people who judge people for eating sugar.

I was thinking this. A lot of people seem to think if you make junk from scratch in your kitchen, it isn't junk. It's "homemade baking" not junk.

It may have less upfs but the amount of fat and sugar in most edible flapjacks does not make them healthy. Why not a bowl of rolled oats if you really care about what they are eating?

The reality is a small amount of junk won't harm anyone.

Yawn. Well done you. Not everybody has the time to be making homemade flapjacks.

SummerDive · 17/08/2026 15:36

@Upsetbetty there was a time in my life when I was baking cookies, flapjacks etc… a time when there was no crisps in the house etc….
Then I couldn’t (got ill).
You know what? Our health is still ok. Eating the ‘perfect diet’ (according to the couple of nutritionists I saw) didn’t stop me from getting ill either. Or to see my health declining.

Now I’m not saying you’re wrong on paper. A home cooked diet with no crisps etc… is PROBABLY better for you (Probably because eating home made food still doesn’t mean you’re having a balanced diet)

Bit you have no idea what the people you’re judging are going through. Health, ND, stress, family issues, crazy hours at work (I’m thinking shift work etc…) There are MANY reasons why people don’t spend the time you do in the kitchen.
And you do because even if your flapjack feels effortless to you now, it 1- still take time and 2- took more effort AND time in the first place
