AIBU to think that the amount of processed snacks people buy in their grocery shopping is getting ridiculous? Watching people share their grocery shop on instagram etc and I can’t see what meals they can even make as it’s all snacks?? And then they say oh grocery shopping is so expensive!Do people really do this? I don’t buy any biscuits, fizzy drinks (18-20 pack slabs) or crisps as a part of me weekly family shop. I buy the meat, veg and pantry items. That is my weekly shopping. I buy one packet of oat bars for my DCs lunches. If my dc want a snack they have fruit, yogurt, homemade flapjacks etc.

Why do you buy oat bars and make flapjacks?

Newnamesameme · 17/08/2026 11:27

Wow op. You are amazing 👏.

(Is that what you wanted to hear?)

DolphinOnASkateboard · 17/08/2026 11:27

Your question seems to be less "Am I being unreasonable" and more "Am I better than other people," and you seem to have already decided the answer.

OP, if you have a recipe for properly healthy flapjacks I'd been keen to see it.
To me they all seem like sugar disguised as healthy eating for people who judge people for eating sugar.

Healthy flapjacks are one of the easiest snacks to make!!! We make them all the time.

Incredulousaboutlife · 17/08/2026 11:28

I do think the issue here is not the snacks people buy but the fact people are apparently unpacking their shopping on Social Media and others, for some inexplicable reason, spend their time watching them doing it.

Jaimelefromage · 17/08/2026 11:29

While I agree with some posters above that people can eat/feed their families exactly what they want, and I have never watched an Instagram shopping haul, I also agree that the amount of processed snacks in some people’s trolleys is pretty shocking. I always think they must feel really shit eating so much processed ‘food’, it can’t do your body any good at all.
But each to their own.

I have my own eyeballed recipe I don’t use sugar or syrup. I use some coconut oil and it has oats and seeds etc, banana, dates (these are great for binding) and some almond or Peanut butter etc

Coconut oil is not good for health I am told

Why do you buy oat bars and make flapjacks?

I do get a certain brand of oat bars because they have no nuts in them (classroom allergies) but these are only for school use. As I said I add peanut butter etc to mine

Four adults here, we do have snacks, I wouldn't have many in but DH and DDs like them. We have plain and S&V crisps and small Tesco versions of Snickers, ice lollies and Kinder Bueno. Also coke, soda water, tonic, beer as we like lime & soda or G&Ts and I have the odd can of Coke zero. We also have a ton of fresh fruit and veg (at this time in the week anyway) and fresh, dried, tinned and frozen ingredients. It looks like the Masterchef pantry with snacks on a Saturday.

Noras · 17/08/2026 11:30

Coconut oil is not inherently "poison," but it is about 85% to 90% saturated fat, which raises "bad" LDL cholesterol and increases heart disease risks.

MyOliveStork · 17/08/2026 11:31

I agree OP, there is an awful lot of processed foods and snacks out there and they do seem to be the main part of many people’s diets these days. All of sugar and additives and crap.

I've bought two packs of chocolate biscuits, choc caramel wafers and Time Out. I've bought them as having tradesman in tomorrow. I hope he eats quite a few so I don't have to.

Normally I don't buy any biscuit stuff, crisps, sweets or any other type of snack product.

Not great in large quantities no, but a great substitute for butter in a Flapjack recipe. I use a small amount

You don't need to justify yourself

And equally you don't need to eat what's left unless you want to.

People’s shopping could be distorted eg I buy my beans/ tomatoes etc from Biona on line and might get my veg separately. So saying we are becoming increasingly Puritan here so no breakfast cereals, no soda drinks, only seeded eg spelt or brown sourdough, few potatoes / rice. We prefer fresh veg, nuts especially walnuts, yoghurt, keffir, flax seeds, berries, quinoa, tofu, lots of pulses eg lentils cauliflower to make rice, fresh salmon, mackerel etc but my 22 year old ASD son likes the occasional crisp - I prefer them to en lentil.

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 17/08/2026 11:35

DH and I buy a lot of snacks. We are both neurodiverse and struggle with cooking and eating in various ways. Snacks last a long time, taste the same every time and don't have the textural issues that fresh food has.

HTH.

BringBackCatsEyes · 17/08/2026 11:36

YANBU, but you thinking this is not worthy of debate. We all know that as a nation we eat too much processed and junk food.

YABU for watching junk Insta, thinking it's real life and using it to inform your opinions.

takealettermsjones · 17/08/2026 11:37

Why do you assume that the people buying snacks are the same people complaining that their shopping bill is high? 🤔

(It's me, I'm the same people - but at least I know why mine is high 😂)

Could you share the brand please? I’ve a child with a peanut allergy and have never seen any that are readily available.

Noras · 17/08/2026 11:38

I seem to ignore most of the supermarket these days as little of it applies to us. By the same time our shopping is not so expensive as we don’t buy all that stuff. If only people realised that but people are too short of time, too depressed and frazzled to get to grips with it all. Also people lack an education to cook from scratch. They see fast food as food not plastic junk. It’s quite sad really.

Talk me through why you think coconut oil is healthier than butter?

BringBackCatsEyes · 17/08/2026 11:41

Upsetbetty · 17/08/2026 11:24

It’s not about being virtuous but people need to stop buying processed crap and actually meal plan if they want to reduce their shopping bills! It’s the “oh look I bought all this and it cost £150 and I’ll still have to do a top up shop in 3 days time!” Statements that are ridiculous! Well yeah no shit Sherlock because I’m you didn’t actually buy anything that constitutes a meal you bought snacks…

I thought junk food was cheaper than raw ingredients.
Can't you go to Iceland and stock up on loads of frozen crap and call it 'meals'?

I don't think regular supermarket raw ingredients (meat, veg, herbs and spices) is cheaper than an Iceland haul, you need to have the time and education cook more cheaply and eat well.

Bloozie · 17/08/2026 11:42

What is it about this that has moved you to posting here about it, beyond the opportunity to virtue signal?

Our weekly shop includes one slab of fizzy drinks and two multipacks of French Fries as basic staples.

It also includes salad ingredients, 3 sorts of fruit to snack on, veg for the week, meat for the week, fixings for lunch (baking potatoes, pasta, eggs, baked beans) and enough greek yoghurt to sink a ship, as basic staples.

I reserve the right to whinge about how expensive everything is and the need to sell a kidney if it's a week where we need both butter AND olive oil, without someone like you whinging about the French Fries and fizzy drinks.

LondonLass2026 · 17/08/2026 11:42

I don't really care what you think when my Tesco shop arrives later today and there are Snack a Jacks and Haribo in it. We eat very well and cook most nights (one night a week we get takeaway), and I've lost 3 stone in 2 years, so if I want to snack, I'll snack.
