AIBU to think that the amount of processed snacks people buy in their grocery shopping is getting ridiculous? Watching people share their grocery shop on instagram etc and I can’t see what meals they can even make as it’s all snacks?? And then they say oh grocery shopping is so expensive!Do people really do this? I don’t buy any biscuits, fizzy drinks (18-20 pack slabs) or crisps as a part of me weekly family shop. I buy the meat, veg and pantry items. That is my weekly shopping. I buy one packet of oat bars for my DCs lunches. If my dc want a snack they have fruit, yogurt, homemade flapjacks etc.

I can't believe the junk people watch online, such a waste of time and can't be good for their mental health.

I live in an off grid cabin, lit only by the sun and pure beeswax candles I make myself. I only eat food grown on my homestead and never touch any chemicals. /s

Shamesame · 17/08/2026 11:43

I cook from scratch every single day for me and my toddler, including making them muffins or ’cakes’ (which contain vegetables and oats and raisins) I also run nearly every day.

does that mean I don’t also put a packet of biscuits or grown up cakes in my weekly shopping? Of course not! Life is about balance.

I hate shopping. I'd hate to watch someone else's shopping!

Snacks are a massive part of people's diet, that's why we are fat. They are a quick hit, cheap to buy and addictive. Quite often it's cheaper to buy a 5 packet of donuts than a 5 packet of decent tomatoes that actually smell and taste like tomatoes.

You do realise that by using beeswax candles, you are enslaving bees?

We only use rapeseed candles to light our underground geothermally heated ecobunker. Soy and coconut are decent alternatives, but the airmiles are horrific and obviously there's the deforestation to consider with soy.

Coconut oil is not inherently "poison," but it is about 85% to 90% saturated fat, which raises "bad" LDL cholesterol and increases heart disease risks.

It's a fantastic example of how dumb the whole "UPFs are bad" thing has become. Hideously unhealthy and objectively worse for you than more processed alternatives, but, hey, it's "natural" and therefore "good".

Ha! Very good.

You are getting a lot of pushback here, I'm guessing probably from people who love their snacks and fizzy drinks. My habits are like yours - I don't buy any kind of snack foods or fizzy drinks, so naturally, I am inclined to agree with you. I notice the snack habit when I'm waiting in the queue for the till at my local supermarket and see what other people have in their trolleys. Plus, I am regularly gobsmacked by the sheer amount of totally unnecessary food on the supermarket shelves. A whole aisle of sweetened HPF breakfast cereal? Sometimes I Iike to imagine what would be left if all the unnecessary crap were taken away. The supermarkets would be 1/10th the size.

Ignore the criticisms of your video viewing preferences. Watching people unpack their shopping is a harmless past-time.

True, if the things that make you want to live are cigarettes, booze, sugar, and fatty foods. Not so much if the things you live for are love, friendship, rewarding work, creative hobbies, and country walks.

I have my own eyeballed recipe I don’t use sugar or syrup. I use some coconut oil and it has oats and seeds etc, banana, dates (these are great for binding) and some almond or Peanut butter etc

Coconut oil is a saturated fat and awful for cholesterol levels.
Dates contain high levels of sugar - fructose. Fructose is actually worse for your body than glucose (normal sugar) because fructose can only be processed by your liver and impacts your metabolic health. Glucose can be broken down by all body cells and is the primary source of energy for the brain.

Sorry but replacing fat with another kind of fat and sugar with another kind of sugar doesn’t make it “healthy”.

But we should probably just let people eat and enjoy the things they like without judgement…

As we're judging people we don't know based on a brief glimpse of their lives on the internet, can I say what I think about people who use "past time" instead of "pastime"?

Could you share the brand please? I’ve a child with a peanut allergy and have never seen any that are readily available.

Getbuzzing is the brand I get them off Amazon or their site.

Most people (shock) like things from both of your lists.

OMG I can't believe some awful, awful people buy stuff from Amazon. Not like me, sainted as I am.

redskyAtNigh · 17/08/2026 11:52

Lots of people can't cook and processed food is all they know.

And, you have no idea how long the snacks etc are intended for. We buy biscuits but they can sit in the cupboard for weeks. We buy trays of fizzy drinks but they go down at the rate of 1 or 2 a week. We do, however tend to buy things in bulk, so you'd get a false idea of our weekly eating habits.

Can you believe? The tax evasion, the poor quality control, the depletion of local high streets, the carbon emissions. All just so they can be lazy.

Exactly. Snacks last ages. I have packs of biscuits in the cupboard that haven't been opened and that have been there since May. I just got them when they were on offer.

ViciousCurrentBun · 17/08/2026 11:53

If you are older like me maybe you were to believe that snacking in between meals was just not allowed. It did not matter if it was healthy or crap it was just very much frowned on. So for some older members here they very much may have been raised to believe this.

It’s actually a huge significant cultural shift in the habits of the nation. I worked in a social science dept, food habits and diets were not my specific area but there was some interest in food habits as I studied poverty and educational outcomes.

I think one of the interesting things about snacking is teeth. I do have a bridge as I had an accident as a teenager. My current bridge has lasted almost 30 years which my dentist says is exceptional. I almost never snack, do when hiking as needed for energy. She explained how every time we eat it affects our teeth, they bathe in sugars, fruit so beloved by MN has fructose. She called grapes sugar bombs. So she said if you have a packet of sweets it’s best to just eat them up rather than say have one every hour for many hours, or something like that.

BCBird · 17/08/2026 11:54

Funny old world where watching people unpack shopping is entertainment.

Next up, paint drying.

I stumbled on a YouTube video of someone unpacking an Amazon mystery box. My first thought was why would anyone want to pay over good money for a box full of useless shite (which it was) and my second, was that watching paint dry would actually be a lot more entertaining !!

People eat snacks all day, wonder why they’re fat, complain about being poor, say they barely eat, ask for GLP1, keep eating snacks.

Meanwhile, millions of people go hungry.
