AIBU to think that the amount of processed snacks people buy in their grocery shopping is getting ridiculous? Watching people share their grocery shop on instagram etc and I can’t see what meals they can even make as it’s all snacks?? And then they say oh grocery shopping is so expensive!Do people really do this? I don’t buy any biscuits, fizzy drinks (18-20 pack slabs) or crisps as a part of me weekly family shop. I buy the meat, veg and pantry items. That is my weekly shopping. I buy one packet of oat bars for my DCs lunches. If my dc want a snack they have fruit, yogurt, homemade flapjacks etc.

My point really is that instead of carping at consumers, maybe we need to look at deeper structural lifestyle issues including the way we access food.
I can access healthy food on a tight budget because my attitude isn't like yours.

Yes, you are right: we do seem to have different attitudes - particularly to being quick in judging the habits of others, including those with disability.

At least I can read and comprehend, Marie-Antoinette.

People should start growing their own vegetables and raising their own animals in the backyard, a hog, a chicken or two and maybe a few sheep.

Well actually that's back to front: she COULDN'T care less or comprehend why people couldn't manage, which is much closer to your cry of "Let them eat Shredded Wheat" than what I am saying.

Not sure I'd be up for killing my own animals, 😂but vegetable growing is a really great suggestion where people have the space.

My grandparents did it, as did many of their friends, and I think it was seen as more normal, though I do know quite a few people in cities who make use of allotments and they really enjoy it. They also swap produce, which I think is really nice.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 19/08/2026 23:15

I do grow some fruit and veg but just as a nice add on, not to sustain us. The local veg box is pretty good though.

We (DH) grow lots in our garden (tomatoes, peppers, chillies, courgette, dwarf beans, runner beans, cucumber, blueberries, salads/spinach, beetroot) which us why there's not so much veg in our virtual trolley at the moment. So if the Sainsbury's delivery person wants to judge, crack on.

Blueberries is interesting! Do the bushes take long to get to size?

Blueberries are quite expensive so that is a useful bush.

I would have to ask DH as he is the gardener 😁 We do have quite a few bushes, but have had blueberries every day for weeks, but think they are coming to the end now.

The thing with growing your own is that you have to eat what you've got, which can mean a lot of dinners with courgettes if you get a glut! (Although lemon courgette cake is 😋).

I forgot strawberries and raspberries.

There is something quite nice about the slight lack of control in that though - kind of turning yourself over to Nature and being at one with the seasons.

It contrasts hugely with force-ripened strawberries at Christmas!

Do you have a good courgette fritter recipe!? 😂

And courgette cake is actually moist and delicious.

Ponderingwindow · 20/08/2026 00:36

I think your feed would benefit from some of the content creators making recipes for disabled and chronically ill people. You might gain a bit of understanding of how people can struggle to cook healthy food from scratch.

I've never had them before, but these sound delicious so I might give them a go

How old do I need to be 🤔

Some of us don’t see anything wrong with snacks or treats or whatever you want to call them - as part of a balanced, varied diet. I don’t believe in restricting any food groups.

Most of this stuff is not “food”, just a mix of flavouring, colouring and preservatives! Have a read of Ultra processed people it is a real eye opener. The food industry and big corporations are playing us and dont give a crap about the nations future health, only interested in profit which they make by the millions by creating more and more addictive “treats” that we consume and give our kids and so the cycle goes on…

Lilyhatesjaz · 20/08/2026 08:23

I grow blueberries in large pots, they are really easy to grow but they do need eracacious soil which you can get from the garden centre and to be watered with only rainwater.
You would need to be in an area with acidic soil to grow them straight in the ground.

Have a look at 'eat well for less' I'm currently working through the NZ version. There are a lot of reasons people buy snacks, and they are not all straight forward.

I used to like that and have the cookery book, but wouldn't watch the UK version now (Gregg Wallace 😐)

Well I rejoined instagram for content on certain dietary needs and these are popping up. There are a lot of “normal” people tbh not those in USA doing Costco hauls etc.

Normal people don't unpack their shopping on Instagram.

Put the internet down.

I don't think that obesity is all down to snacking. I was brought up in the 60s and 70s and I have a theory that the real reason many more people are overweight today than in the past is that we are the first generation to actually be able to eat food that we enjoy the taste of rather than what was available.
I remember roast and veg Sunday, cold meat and fried potatoes Tuesday and Wednesday, the same meat minced up as cottage pie Thursdays, may be some stew or beans on toast.
It was all the same all boring and I ate the minimum.
These days we have access to food from all around the world, we eat things we actually like so we eat more and get bigger.

Well not if you’re snacking on apples and nuts.

But UPFs are deliberately manufactured to make you crave and buy more.

Food needs to be much more tightly regulated and foodstuffs with little to no nutritional content should be banned outright.

Why? Genuinely, why?

I enjoy them as part of a well-balanced diet. I eat super healthy through the week, at weekends I chill the fuck out. As likelihood is something else will kill me first.

Why should anything be banned? People need self control. They shouldn’t have to be babysat through life.

God forbid someone enjoys themselves.

What are you classing as no nutritional content?
