Why does it feel so hot today?

Genuinely interested. I'm in Cambridge and apparently it is 23 degrees here. I was shocked when I looked at the thermometer and weather forecast. It feels at least 30. I am from the Caribbean and spend a fair bit of time there. This feels similar to Caribbean summer. Curious if any clever person can tell me why it feels so much hotter than it is? I have never known 23 degrees to feel like this!

Is it because we were told itll be cooler, but in reality we would think 23/24 is nice weather? Also houses retaining heat?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 16/08/2026 15:23

Humidity?

LoafofSellotape · 16/08/2026 15:24

Yes, I just said the same. I'd like a nice cool breeze please!

curious79 · 16/08/2026 15:29

The ground / environment has already warmed up. Everything is warmer so when the sun shines you have a warmer effect in general

dhillan · 16/08/2026 15:31

Interesting! As I said, I have never felt 23 degrees like this before. Thankfully I really enjoy this kind of weather but wow is it warm!

Yeah I think the houses have all warmed up and are retaining heat. Outdoors isn’t as bad but still seems quite sticky. Get yourself a Jack’s gelato OP from Benet St. Daily if you can! That’s my coping strategy.

I'm outside! Just feels as though the sun has moved a few million miles closer.

I was going to say dew point but then I checked what it is in Cambridge and it's only 13 today so should feel cooler. Are other people around you feeling it too?
Also, if it is sunny, then it would feel much warmer as temperature is generally measured in the shade.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 16/08/2026 15:35

Well I'm in the West Coast of Scotland and it's cold here.
I've got the fire on.

MsGreying · 16/08/2026 15:36

We had a bit of rain - you could count the drops. That's made it worse.

somanychristmaslights · 16/08/2026 15:36

I’m in the SE. It’s been cloudy all day but feels super warm and humid.

RealEagle · 16/08/2026 15:37

It’s 26 here a lot cooler than it has been ,it feels quite nice.

Norugratsatall · 16/08/2026 15:39

Yes I’m in SE and agree it’s been very humid today! Close to 60% humidity. Lots of cloud cover and trying desperately to rain so moisture in the air. Not a stir of a breeze either…. Feels way hotter than the 24° the weather app is showing.

Theresmagicwheretheflowersgrow · 16/08/2026 16:02

According to the BBC weather app it's 22° in West Mids. They measure the temperature in the shade. The thermometer in my sunny garden says it's 35 degrees!

My car says 34!

I was at the carboot at 7am this morning. It was overcast and the car claimed it was 22 degrees. I was roasting, like it was high 20s. It must be the humidity.

Lottapianos · 16/08/2026 17:15

Same in London today and yesterday. Supposed to be 26 but feels at least 32. Horrendously hot and sticky. Looks to be cooling down properly from Weds. It's going to be a shock!
