To think this was weird (dress code)

The boss at my new workplace organised a 'casual clothes Wednesday'. It was very hot, almost 30 degrees and i didn't fancy jeans, but also the way I dress is probably already what most people would consider more 'formal' anyway.
I went in my outfit and noticed the boss looking. She said "Oh you've definitely forgotten haven't you?"
I tried to say, "No this is just how I'd dress anyway."
She said "No, I saw you earlier and I thought, "she's definitely not remembered.".
I just laughed it off, no point arguing with stupid. I didn't turn up in a suit or ballgown or anything.
Bit weird how she was looking at my outfit and judging from wherever she was, surely she can realise that not everyone wants to wear jeans or a tracksuit and should it matter?

IME students that arrive in their uniform on non uniform day have something bad going on -

They either don't have the appropriate clothes to keep up with their wealthy counterparts or
They are between two houses with one of the parents playing silly buggers and refusing to send clothes across.

As PPs have said, it's very common for ND students who are going to school and prefer the routine and security of wearing their school clothes over going off-routine and into the social and sensory minefield of wearing something casual.

In our last month of term our students could wear PE kit due to the heat. The majority of those who opted to stick to shirts and blazers are ND. Their temperature regulation can often be different too.

As an adult, the boundaries of casual/ workwear have blurred, particularly with trends in dresses that cover both.

She's not called Ingrid is she? My old boss had an obsession with clothing.
She cancelled casual Friday because apparently none of us knew how to dress in the correct smart casual office wear.
She constantly picked on people for not wearing expensive enough clothes. We were all on mimimum wage.

Nah she was just expecting at least one person to forget. I’m a secondary teacher and have done the same to student in uniform.
Also they had chosen to wear uniform that day!!
Just smiles and agree.

what were you wearing.

We had difficulty getting DD (year 7, soon year 8) into anything different in the last few weeks of term. Like most schools they said no blazers or ties, please wear PE kit (and ultimately anything to keep you cool as couldn't wash things quick enough) but she's autistic and was really resistant to change her routine. Ended up managing a school shirt with PE shorts combo. And keeping the blazer off was touch and go.

Just seen your post after I'd posted mine. Yes very difficult to get DD out of the school uniform as she loves it so much. I'm the same (AuDHD) - my winter work outfit is jeans and a hoody, my summer one is shorts and a vest, and there's not much else I would wear. DS when he was at school would have a meltdown on wear what you want days - will he get picked on, what if the Christmas jumper isn't right...he also struggles with temperature regulation, so he'd love to wear a Christmas jumper year round

Why would you not just take her at her word - that she thought you'd forgotten? Why are you making a massive fuss over it?

People who insist on wearing office clothes when it's casual Friday are usually a pain in the arse. They'd be the first to judge if someone dressed casually in a traditional office environment.

Are you one of the 'id rather die than wear trainers' brigade? I work with couple of those who harp on about how no one wears proper shoes these days or takes care of their appearance.

I can't remember the last time I wore jeans it's been so hot my go to is a casual dress or shorts in 30 degrees.

You can make dresses look casual with flat plain sandals or I wear with pull on skechers.

I think you’ve got some weird ideas about ‘casual’ meaning jeans or tracksuit bottoms.
