To think this was weird (dress code)

The boss at my new workplace organised a 'casual clothes Wednesday'. It was very hot, almost 30 degrees and i didn't fancy jeans, but also the way I dress is probably already what most people would consider more 'formal' anyway.
I went in my outfit and noticed the boss looking. She said "Oh you've definitely forgotten haven't you?"
I tried to say, "No this is just how I'd dress anyway."
She said "No, I saw you earlier and I thought, "she's definitely not remembered.".
I just laughed it off, no point arguing with stupid. I didn't turn up in a suit or ballgown or anything.
Bit weird how she was looking at my outfit and judging from wherever she was, surely she can realise that not everyone wants to wear jeans or a tracksuit and should it matter?

The issue isn't 'but what were you wearing??' The point is that the clothing day was optional and that everyone has a different idea of casual. Not everyone wants to wear jeans or shorts.

It is a bit about what you were wearing. If you stood out from everyone else and weren’t dressed any differently to how you’d normally dress. It would be easy to think you’d forgotten.
It’s not really a big deal though either way.

throwaway3749574 · 16/08/2026 10:27

I agree with you it was a bit weird and unnecessary of her to comment. Also most work places aren’t that smart these days. I’m more than happy wearing my summer dresses to work and wouldn’t change for a “casual” day

WildFatball · 16/08/2026 10:29

Who wears jeans in this weather? Also, your boss needs to be careful commenting on people's attire, it's an HR liability minefield.

AnnaBelIa · 16/08/2026 10:39

... Maybe she needs to organise a 'mind your own business Wednesday' next 😂

Venusunbroken · 16/08/2026 10:40

People can be really weird about clothes. Competitive and jealous.

i always dress well, my clothes tend to the expensive, my bil always comments, like ffs why are you wearing that, how much did that cost, I don’t tell him, and “why do you need expensive clothes” , and then refers to himself, “i don’t need expensive clothes” etc. for info, I never talk about the brands or cost, I never talk to him about my clothing full stop. I’m always dressed in my opinion appropriately and comfortably . Usually in midi dresses or wide leg trousers and a silk top or cashmere slouchy jumper. I do wear jeans, but occasionally,

he wears really old jeans or crap his wife bought him from temu, cheap t shirts and hoodies. Always done in as none of it lasts long. They are not short of money, but tight,

i just don’t get it, there is no prize for looking like a hobo , I never comment on his clothes. I love him to bits , he’s such a lovely guy, but for some reason how I dress drives him to comment, and occassionally when he’s coming over I consider wearing jeans and a t shirt just so I don’t get comments, but I don’t as I am who I am and I’m not going down that path.

his wife is worse, as she eyes me up and down and makes a cats arse mouth,I’m sure she talks about me behind my back to him, which could be driving it, but I’d never dream of commenting on someone’s clothes past you look lovely,

Likeiloveyou · 16/08/2026 11:21

Why are you so bothered about a light hearted passing comment?

WonderingWanda · 16/08/2026 11:48

She sounds like an idiot. She had got it in your head that you'd forgotten, there was no need for her to make a thing out of it whether you had forgotten or just don't like ultra casual or her idea of casual. It is entirely irrelevant to your ability to donyour h
job. It's a her problem, she must be a fairly rubbish manager if she is giving it this much headspace to be thinking about who might forget, then noticing who forgot (or not), hasn't she got any actual work to do?

This is what I wondered along with why does the OP keep going on about jeans, like they're the only form of casual clothing.

This really wouldn't illicit more than an eye-roll from most people.

Whatsyourflavour12 · 16/08/2026 14:27

So presumably I'd be able to comment on what she's wearing too on any particular day?

IME students that arrive in their uniform on non uniform day have something bad going on -

They either don't have the appropriate clothes to keep up with their wealthy counterparts or
They are between two houses with one of the parents playing silly buggers and refusing to send clothes across.

Or in my DS case ND and school uniform is what you wear to school so why would you wear anything else 😂

Howlerhog · 16/08/2026 16:19

I really don’t understand why people buy formal clothes that aren’t comfortable to wear.

I mean you can…but it makes less sense than her commenting on the fact you’ve showed up in formal work dress on a day where everyone else has agreed to come in wearing t-shirts and shorts, or similar.

It was just a light hearted comment ffs. Same as if everyone agreed to bring in a cake one day, and you showed up with a stir fry, I’m sure you might get a comment of ‘you didn’t get the cake memo then? Haha’. It’s just human/social nature to be thinking this.

Well yes, if she turns up on a normal day in jeans you can say ‘oh, did you think it was another casual day’?

Because who gives a shit? She’s not giving it a second thought.

Or it was just a flippant passing comment meant as small talk and OP has blown it all out of proportion

Whatsyourflavour12 · 16/08/2026 09:46

What i was wearing isn't really relevant, I wore a dress but as I already mentioned i didn't come in something very formal it's not relevant as I should be able to wear whatever I like if it's optional.

It is relevant and also this is a chat forum it isn’t an unreadable question.

Blomama · 17/08/2026 19:31

DetailRedacted · 16/08/2026 10:12

What a weird non problem to start a thread about 🥱

Even stranger that the post is about what she was wearing but OP says this is not relevant 🤣🤣🤣

anewlifeinthesun · 17/08/2026 19:52

You sound hard work OP

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 17/08/2026 19:57

Casual clothes doesn’t mean ‘come in jeans’ though OP! I’m wearing casual clothes right now…a pair of loose, cream, linen blend wide legged trousers and a pale blue t-shirt. It’s very casual, and very cool. It also looks nice so I’d be comfortable wearing it to work 🤷‍♀️

Katigee410 · 17/08/2026 21:13

It seems judgemental and dare I say unnecessary. Just because you don't want to wear jeans then does it matter and why call you out for wearing what you feel comfortable with ?

She says, being incredibly rude about his clothes....... Hmm

This makes your post a bit redundant.

My child is autistic and prefers to wear uniform on non uniform day. It's her routine to wear uniform to school and she doesn't like change.

Some people may genuinely forget.
