To not butter both sides of a sandwich?

Please help settle a (light-hearted) dispute between me and DH.

Buttering sandwiches for child’s birthday party (with spread, not actual butter, before anyone worries about kids arteries). I butter one slice of bread only and leave a little gap between buttered area and edge of slice, so spread doesn’t ooze out over the edge. DH butters both slices of bread AND spreads butter right to the edges of the slice. DH says my sandwiches are too dry, I say his are clarted in spread and too greasy.

Obviously how much butter you apply is down to personal preference - but DH maintains that I am in the minority and most people butter both slices and butter right to the edge.

YABU - DH is right, only buttering a single side of the sandwich is wrong
YANBU - one side of butter is sufficient

Both sides or it falls apart, you get soggy bread, it's too dry - etc etc.

I lost my shit at a James May video the other day where he buttered one side and is then moaning that the sandwich isn't sticking together. ITS DUE TO YOUR OWN INCOMPETENT BUTTER PROTOCOL MAY!... ugh.

Timble · 15/08/2026 21:57

A friend of mine only butters one side of bread for sandwiches, I don’t know anyone else who does this!!

Teenagerantruns · 15/08/2026 21:57

M wife only puts butter one side.. she says thats how her mum did it..its ridiculous if you ask me but she does butter 2 sides for me now.

canonlydoblue · 15/08/2026 22:12

Both sides, proper butter. Those poor children....

Titsywoo · 15/08/2026 22:21

I only butter one side too OP. I don't find it tastes any different - definitely not dry. Just seems a waste to me!

Hankunamatata · 15/08/2026 22:23

Oow no. How do you decide which side to butter?

(Massively over think lol)

elm26 · 15/08/2026 22:27

Team DH and we only have real butter in the house, because it’s better for you than spread. I always spread right to the edges too.

Always the bottom slice for me!

mondaytosunday · 15/08/2026 22:32

I don’t use butter (and please use it, spread is gross) but one side is sufficient.

blythet · 15/08/2026 22:38

Team DH for me. The more butter/lurpak the better.

And I’m Scottish so don’t think it’s a Scotland/England divide like you suggested. If anything I’d expect us Scot’s to have the unhealthy version (as a nation, not saying all Scot’s are unhealthy)

Fifiesta · 15/08/2026 22:44

Overall I agree with your husband.
However if it was for myself, and I was having a multi layered sandwich, and the top layer was cream cheese for example, I would not butter that side and then put cream cheese over that, why eat the extra calories when they are not needed?

I also drink wine with lots of ice…so perhaps I’m just good at being me, not the pack.

Perhaps I am your friend as seems there are very few of us doing it this way!

Both sides, though if it’s for a kids birthday party it doesn’t matter as they won’t get eaten (at least not by the children) anyway.

To be fair the jam ones went down very well, despite only being buttered on one side 😉

Howlerhog · 15/08/2026 22:53

Gah! Spread is so unhealthy. Use butter or nothing whatsoever. Never, ever ‘spread’.

Turtlebed · 16/08/2026 00:00

I am Team DH, love the butter, dont want a dry a sandwich. However my children dont like butter at all, so it's personal preference im the end. I did vote YABU thought, sorry!

Lubrana061302 · 16/08/2026 02:08

I am Scottish and I butter both sides and right to the edges and corners. Agree with DH :-)

Dontcallmescarface · 16/08/2026 02:09

I only butter one side. If I'm making a sandwich with a hot filling I don't butter at all. I hate butter or butter spread type stuff and as for warm spread, just no.

LennyLenses · 15/08/2026 18:43

Oh good.

You can all skip off feeling smug and superior then.

And worry about those poor children leaving a birthday party with their arteries bursting - destined for a life of ill health after munching on a sandwich.

I think the people mentioning the spread are doing so in response of the OP reassuring us that she is using spread rather than butter as she believes it’s healthier. People are just pointing out that it is not the case.

Summernites · 16/08/2026 03:27

I’m Scottish and butter both sides. Quite thinly compared to other people around me, but always to the edge. I NEVER butter jam sandwiches 🤢

BacksToTheFuture · 15/08/2026 18:32

I'd you've been together long enough to have a child old enough for a party with sandwiches how the helly has this only come to light?

Have you never made a sandwich in his presence before?

There's no way the majority will agree with you so once the debate has been settled will you be changing your ways?

No indication it has only just come to light, is there. It could be a 30 year issue.

Firstly spread is worse than butter. Proper butter is buttermilk & a dash of salt. just two ingredients. I purchase my butter from Tesco (Tesco label) If your spread is just 2 ingredients good for you. Now for the bread. Company called Jason’s has fewest ingredients for bread. Flour, Water, Yeast & salt, some have added iron etcetera etcetera. You should really check your labels.

no sugar in either of the products I purchase. I make sure I eat like my grandma would.

I do butter both sides all the way to the edge. As I know my food is the cleanest I can get.

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 04:03

For myself I never butter the bread I just eat the sandwich with dry bread as my cholesterol is a little higher but for anyone else I used butter or spread if they prefer that and do both sides of the bread.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/08/2026 04:57

OP, you're being a bit stingy with the butter, etc.

LaCerbiatta · 15/08/2026 21:35

I never ever butter a sandwich! Absolutely hate it when I have to deconstruct a cafe one that comes with 1cm thick knobs of butter 🤢. And when I have toast I use margarine (which no longer have hydrogenated fats!!!) which i hate but are much lower in saturated fats and I have high cholesterol.

Really funny the indignation of using a UPF product when talking about what I can only picture as sliced bread!

“Really funny the indignation of using a UPF product when talking about what I can only picture as sliced bread!”

Many people make their own bread (by hand or by bunging the ingredients in a bread maker) but even if not, many packaged breads now are little more than flour, yeast and salt. Definitely not in the same upf league as margarine.

WineCharm · 16/08/2026 08:48

Spread will clog arteries. Butter is healthy. Both sides or no sides!
