To not butter both sides of a sandwich?

Please help settle a (light-hearted) dispute between me and DH.

Buttering sandwiches for child’s birthday party (with spread, not actual butter, before anyone worries about kids arteries). I butter one slice of bread only and leave a little gap between buttered area and edge of slice, so spread doesn’t ooze out over the edge. DH butters both slices of bread AND spreads butter right to the edges of the slice. DH says my sandwiches are too dry, I say his are clarted in spread and too greasy.

Obviously how much butter you apply is down to personal preference - but DH maintains that I am in the minority and most people butter both slices and butter right to the edge.

YABU - DH is right, only buttering a single side of the sandwich is wrong
YANBU - one side of butter is sufficient

I don't know anyone who makes a sandwich and only spreads one slice. The sandwiches you make must be so dry.

I don’t know anyone who does it your way.

Depending on the filling, doesn’t butter help it all stick together eg if it’s slices of cheese, butter helps the cheese stick to the bread.

Legolaslady · 15/08/2026 18:20

I dont go right to the edge but definitely spread both sides. I don't know anyone who doesn't. They must be dry to eat

Mooselander · 15/08/2026 18:21

Yeah you have to butter both sides. YABU.

chedderland · 15/08/2026 18:21

we were asked to do that when I worked on a cafe. I’ve never known of it otherwise. So weird and tight

IdaGlossop · 15/08/2026 18:23

Clarted! There's a word I haven't heard for decades. Wonderful.

This is the first I have heard of only one slice of bread being buttered when making a sandwich. Butter helps the filling stick.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 15/08/2026 18:23

Just no, both sides and use butter, not nasty spread

BrickBuilt · 15/08/2026 18:24

I butter both sides all the way to the edges; there is usually tomato or lettuce or cucumber or something damp in there so it helps it not make the bread soggy.

I thought this was the main point actually!

I'm with you OP, I've only ever buttered one side (but I go right to the crust).

Roseshavethorns · 15/08/2026 18:25

I hate butter so make my sandwich with dry bread. If I'm making for anyone else I butter 1 side but there is normally something "saucy" like pickle or mayo next to the other slice.
Do people really have mayo next to butter?

Sometimessmiling · 15/08/2026 18:26

Totally agree, spreads so much more unhealthy than butter

Youhadrambledonfor18pages · 15/08/2026 18:27

How much spread are you putting on that it will “ooze” 😱😬🤢

Also agree with pp’s, use butter as it’s not a UPF like gross margarines.

bananaapplepears · 15/08/2026 18:27

Both sides and use proper butter not spread (which is full of god knows what).

TunnocksOrDeath · 15/08/2026 18:28

I'd be more worried about you ditching proper butter in favour of hydrogenated junk full of transfats.

PinkyFlamingo · 15/08/2026 18:29

I butter both sides, I've never had any "ooze out"!

Wehavealaughdontwe · 15/08/2026 18:30

One side only! Have never buttered both sides but grew up poor so maybe we rationed butter (or margarine!)

Yes it "holds" the mayo stops it sinking into bread

LennyLenses · 15/08/2026 18:31

I'm with your DH.

I'd be very disappointed if I received a half buttered sandwich.

And it's hard enough to get some kids to eat their crusts, without them being so dry.

Justmemyselfandi999 · 15/08/2026 18:31

I only butter one side!

Loulou4022 · 15/08/2026 18:31

I butter both sides but leave a teeny edge unbuttered. I’ve seen your version suggested for dieting to lower calories.

Always. Always. One.

🙄🙄🙄

BacksToTheFuture · 15/08/2026 18:32

I'd you've been together long enough to have a child old enough for a party with sandwiches how the helly has this only come to light?

Have you never made a sandwich in his presence before?

There's no way the majority will agree with you so once the debate has been settled will you be changing your ways?

StHilarion · 15/08/2026 18:35

When I was growing up in the days before toasters or at least our home did not have one and bread was toasted under the grill, my dad only ever toasted one side
