To not butter both sides of a sandwich?

RoaryLion1 · 15/08/2026 18:16

Please help settle a (light-hearted) dispute between me and DH.

Buttering sandwiches for child’s birthday party (with spread, not actual butter, before anyone worries about kids arteries). I butter one slice of bread only and leave a little gap between buttered area and edge of slice, so spread doesn’t ooze out over the edge. DH butters both slices of bread AND spreads butter right to the edges of the slice. DH says my sandwiches are too dry, I say his are clarted in spread and too greasy.

Obviously how much butter you apply is down to personal preference - but DH maintains that I am in the minority and most people butter both slices and butter right to the edge.

YABU - DH is right, only buttering a single side of the sandwich is wrong
YANBU - one side of butter is sufficient

Always. Always. One.

🙄🙄🙄

I was only the 16th response on the thread and already the 5th person to mention it ! But whatever.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 15/08/2026 18:37

Both sides. I recently read a book written not long after WW2 and a character complained that since rationing you could only buy them with butter on one side. And that nobody liked it. (Monica Dickens, I think.)

Oh good.

You can all skip off feeling smug and superior then.

And worry about those poor children leaving a birthday party with their arteries bursting - destined for a life of ill health after munching on a sandwich.

Shortcutsgalore · 15/08/2026 18:44

I worked in a cafe as a teenager and have never forgotten being shouted at for buttering both sides 🥲

GardenCovent · 15/08/2026 18:47

I’m with you op although I do use butter not spread.
I don’t like sandwiches that are clarted with butter/spread so you can actually taste it

MelonSorbet · 15/08/2026 18:48

Been making sandwiches for almost 40 years and I have only ever buttered one side of the bread. I don't know anyone who butters both sides!

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 15/08/2026 18:50

YABU for using "spread" and YAB even more U to only butter one side. Bleurgh.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2026 18:52

DH is right

but you should also ONLY be using butter. Everything else is a UPF unless you’re ‘buttering’ with olive oil 😂

dontmalbeconme · 15/08/2026 18:52

Oh course you butter both slices right to the edges (with real butter). The point of the butter is to stop the fillings making the bread go soggy. It also stops sandwiches being dry, and real butter tastes delicious.
Spread is horrible, so arguably the less of it the better.

It was the OP who raised the topic of the poor kiddies arteries, she's just misinformed. Anyway enough from me now. The point's been made.

Ohthatsabitshit · 15/08/2026 18:54

If you find it hard to spread butter thinly just beat it first in the mixer. I sometimes use mayonnaise instead if it’s a savoury sandwich. I don’t use margarine at all.

I think she means she butters just one slice in a 2 slice sandwich, not that her DH butters both sides of each slice of bread!

AllStarBySmashMouth · 15/08/2026 18:55

YANBU, I’ve only ever buttered one side

Clarabell77 · 15/08/2026 18:56

Both slices get buttered - and if by spread you mean margarine then butter is the better choice in every way.

Gobsmacked.

Until this thread I had never heard of anyone only buttering one slice.

Overthebow · 15/08/2026 18:57

I butter both sides and use real butter. I’d rather my kids ate real butter than spread.

Cannesdo · 15/08/2026 18:59

I butter one side only but would only use real Irish butter.
Or mayonnaise if an egg / egg salad sandwich.
I would never buy a spread.

Wadsworthy · 15/08/2026 18:59

Your DH is correct. Your sandwiches sound mean and dry.

Except you are both barbarians for using “spread” (WTF is that?) instead of butter.

hotmumshit · 15/08/2026 19:00

Yabu for making me side with a man

Sandwich heathen!

DoAWheelie · 15/08/2026 19:00

Use actual butter, and do a thin layer on both sides right up to the edges.

Leaving a gap near the crusts is horrific and makes the dryest most boring part of the sandwich even worse. Using "spread" is what makes it taste rank when you use the right amount as it's plastic crap.

MyLeftArmpit · 15/08/2026 19:03

I grew up in a household where neither of my parents liked butter so we always had dry sandwiches. In fact, I never even realised it was a ‘thing’ until I was about 14 and I had a sandwich at a friends house. Consequently, as an adult, I slather on the Lurpak…both sides 😋 😋

Elmtrees · 15/08/2026 19:04

No matter whether you're using butter, spread, mayo or whatever, it has to be on both sides and right up to the edges of the bread. Otherwise it'll be a dry sandwich.

Except there are six posts to the same effect on the first page alone…

pinkfondu · 15/08/2026 19:08

I don’t use anything, DD likes one side lightly, DS is a slatherer

I think she means she butters just one slice in a 2 slice sandwich, not that her DH butters both sides of each slice of bread!

Wait. Is this misunderstanding?

I think normal is to butter one side of both slices. Is this what you mean?
