AIBU to discuss A level success without private school spending?

Absorbthecost · 14/08/2026 10:32

Parents/carers who have not spent a penny on Educating their children and they have just received great A level results.

The sacrifices made all the struggle,

I’m interested to discuss families where the child has succeeded without need for private school

https://www.gbnews.com/money/private-school-fees-soar-vat

https://www.ft.com/content/091b214d-231b-414a-8f3e-9ef9fc021926?syn-25a6b1a6=1

Those who did pay,

presumably to secure great results at A level

The same kids off to Uni, placements easier to secure as less international competition. Uni the playing field evens.

And now time to pay for Uni,

https://inews.co.uk/news/education/university-tuition-fees-11000-2030-4705197?srsltid=AfmBOorss52PSHD6xJzisWMdeNxcXDen3IrCGS49nnGH1ZyDnmvTOh_k

A child who did outstanding (without spending a penny) the same result as a family who spent £250k + The above article is a low estimation for a selective U.K. day/ boarding.

The kids holding the same result off to the same Uni, How are families feeling!?…. Did you save to help towards the Uni Fees/accomodation.

Private school fees soar to £216,000 amid VAT raid

A private day school education from reception to A-levels now costs an average of £216,189

Now why would any of us be trying to damage the image of “private school” or those in attendance. ?

Are you linked to the bot which kept ranting about teachers fees a few weeks ago? That kept replying to itself, and not answering posts properly, so it was pretty obvious. The tone is fairly similar. And the repeat posting of images.

I do think you're a human. Some of your replies are funny. But I don't think you're being honest.

If you were a parent trying to move their 10yo DC to state school next year, that would be very easy and wouldn't justify all this posting and vitriol.

Do you honestly believe posting on mumsnet (no offence mumsnet) has the power to damage Private school!

Private school have been self sabotaging for a decade. This situation is by their own hand. I don’t want to see other families fall victim to the brochures, open days and websites without fully understanding this current climate. I’m not going to post further. This thread will remain on the internet as a red flag for all who research “Is independent school worth it? Value for money?….”

I completed what I set out to do.

It is not possible for you to save, rescue, private school rep. with a couple of posts on mumsnet. A decade of Independent school financial mismanagement is too great a burden to overcome.

As a state school parent I can tell you the Government have not maintained the buildings in many state schools and in real terms, given inflation, they are a lot poorer per pupil. Our grammar tries to make as much cash as they can by the most inventive methods possible, because the State leaves them no choice! Like I just had to pay a lot to get to see my DC’s exam scrips ahem admin charge. I also donate monthly or there will be no new equipment for science or sports field. QE just did a deal with a private school in India to raise funds. This is because the State has decided children and young people are not worthy of taxpayer funds to get the best out of them. It makes me really angry.
What if private schools are just paying their teachers, maintaining their facilities and accounting for inflation and doing their bit via discounts. Isn’t is actually far more plausible that a good secondary education in this day and age would cost 15000 per pupil (especially accounting for all SEND needs) and a STEM uni education would actually cost 20k?
Seems far more likely to me.

Mistymagic77 · 16/08/2026 16:19

I went to a state comprehensive (not a good one) and got straight As and then As at A level (there was no A then). I don’t send my children to private school for the results and they definitely won’t do as well as I did academically. Hopefully more rounded though.

Araminta1004 · 16/08/2026 16:19

So by all means send your DC to state school, but expect to volunteer and top up where you can, like most of us who do and are in a position to. I have been a governor for years, hours and hours of additional volunteering on school trips and in school reading over many years in primary due to “need” basically. Our old state primary cannot run school trips or do much without heavy parental support in all regards. We may not be paying under a contract term, but we are paying in hours and other ways to make state schools successful. It does not just happen with the shitty funding provided by the State.

This thread won’t be the red flag, your posts will! Your lack of ability to engage in actual discussion is astounding.
You have repeated yourself over and over when in reality, it’s the chip on your shoulder about money rather than actual concern about your daughter’s education, that shines through

My child thankfully is still young enough to succeed anywhere.

For many trapped looking at potential off ramps, transition points they are not so fortunate.

I don’t see there being anything wrong with offering evidence and cause for concern. If I had a very young child Independent school would be like playing Russian roulette with family finance. No one can answer how this will go. The information provided RE the coming years is from the CEO of ISC!

To date, Fees subsidising benefits for 1/3 who cannot afford to be there. This year that figure will increase. It stretches the budget and the standard of provision too thin. Unsustainable.

There's a consistent lack of punctuation too. Is that deliberate - a chosen style? Or is there a translation limitation you're working around?

The same two with the “judgemental” attitudes.

A highly intelligent person will not be ripped off.

People of low intelligence who fail to be able to put across informed argument always resort to insult. You lose.

Highly gifted people with fantastic teachers will do well, That’s what we’ve learned.

No £250k investment per child?….. They achieved this for…. Free?

Seems very clear, students have many pathways to outstanding A level results and the Top universities.

Independent school “support” those who need it and charge £250k for the Day care.

I agree. Do you mean comments like this (which you’ve made)?

“Many at independent schools are mediocre academically”

“You can't afford the first class”

“It's a "top one" with waiting lists
it's still sh*t”

“spoon fed at private”

My thread was an honest investigation into Value for money.

My response will always match the tone I was met with.

However, that never distracted from the purpose of this thread which was and is,

Investigating IF Independent school represents value for money in 2026 onwards.

"People of low intelligence who fail to be able to put across informed argument always resort to insult. "

"Investigating IF Independent school represents value for money in 2026 onwards"

See, these mistakes just don't scan as native British.

To me, the pattern sounds Chinese. Especially "always resort to insult" - that singular is a really typical mistake.

strawberrybubblegum · 16/08/2026 20:52

Also "You can't afford the first class”

No one British would make that mistake (and neither would an autocorrect)

You are hilarious!

You’re dreaming and wishing I am a bot?, youth? Chinese?

Im simply an independent school parent recognising that this is not going to end well and realising I’ve wasted my money.

It is incredibly obnoxious to assume that there is only one way, your-way to communicate.

Are you a bot? Are you living on planet Earth?

Individual idiosyncrasies or communication methods are not wrong, they’re just different to yours.

Again,

This thread was an investigation into viability of private school after reading article of the £250k price tag per child!

Whether I’m human or as accused.. A bot, a youth, American, Chinese! The information is accurate and the purpose for the thread remains the same.

OP posts:
strawberrybubblegum · 16/08/2026 20:56

British mistakes are normally quite obviously linked to how things are said verbally, or similar sounding words.

Well there are actually grammar rules...

But more to the point, people who are non-native in a language tend to make mistakes which link to how their own language is structured.

It simply wouldn't be how a native speaker would speak - and so they don't write that way either.
