How much do you do on holiday

Bit of a row between dh and I on holiday today - in Balearics and have spent most of the week in the resort. It’s a good family friendly place, loads of activities for kids and a beach and water park nearby which we’ve visited. But when abroad I like to see a bit more of the area and suggested a boat trip to a different part of the island tomorrow. Dh basically shot the idea down saying it’s too hot and it’ll be a nightmare with the youngest (3) who to be fair is probably happiest playing in the pool and attending the hotel activities. Older ds (12) may benefit from seeing a bit but isn’t really fussed either. But I get bored and just feel like it’s a waste to come this far and basically stay in the hotel all week.

I don’t disagree with Dh per se but feel a bit deflated and I guess guilty for not making the most of our time away. I’m not talking exclusions everyday but if it were up to Dh we literally wouldn’t go anywhere. Is it worth pushing this or do we just stick to norm.

I'm the wrong person to ask as I almost exclusively do theme park holidays (where I'm on the go every day), hiking holidays (where I'm on the go every day) or city breaks (where I'm on the go every day)!

It's exhausting 😂

GoodkneeBadKnee · 13/08/2026 16:06

Why don't you go with your older DC? When ours were little, that's what we'd do. I'm not fussed about boat trips etc when on holiday, so DH and the DC used to go on them without me.

Anononony · 13/08/2026 16:07

Why don't you split it? DH stays at the hotel with the youngest, you take eldest on the boat trip - everyone's happy

Ablondiebutagoody · 13/08/2026 16:09

I like to do roughly alternate days. One out doing stuff, one chilling by the pool. Or morning out, afternoon by the pool. Will always get out for an evening walk or something though.

Just go and do stuff with older ds.

gollygosshhh · 13/08/2026 16:12

It is really hot and I’m a bit nervous going off alone which is ridiculous I know. I don’t mind what we’re doing, the hotel is great and we’re all having a good time. Ds has said he will go if everyone else does but isn’t overly fussed. I guess im overthinking about ‘making the most’ of our holiday.

I am 'do-er' on holiday, not everyone is. I think you have to be prepared to do things on your own sometimes in this situation just as you would at home. No one is right or wrong but everyone is entitled to have the holiday they want to have. Thats what works for me. A solo excursion can actually be quite empowering

NuffSaidSam · 13/08/2026 16:13

I like to do a mix, but it's not really relevant what I like! I'm not in holiday with you!

In your situation, divide and conquer. Go on the boat trip by yourself or with the eldest. Leave DH and the little one at the hotel. Win win.

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/08/2026 16:15

I holiday to relax, thankfully DH and DC feel the same way. Take the older one and have some quality time on a boat trip! You’ll have fun. That’s a big age gap, it’s good for everyone to do different things.

loveawineloveacrisp · 13/08/2026 16:17

If I'm in a top quality all inclusive as is usually the case I ain't moving mate. I've been known to not leave the resort for the week. Food, drink, waiter service, good books, sunshine, pool. That's all I need.

emuloc · 13/08/2026 16:17

As little as possible, I am on holiday to relax, not run myself ragged going on excursions.

G5000 · 13/08/2026 16:18

go on your own. It's not that scary and will become easier for next holidays.

Where in the Balearics are you? People might have some tips for you. If it's Mallorca, I might.

Natsku · 13/08/2026 16:23

I don't do resort holidays but if I did I'm sure I'd want to go do daytrips and actually see the country I'm visiting, I'd get so bored otherwise.

LividResults · 13/08/2026 16:24

You need to do what you like on holiday but fgs woman up, you don't need a man holding your hand to go on a bloody boat trip or whatever.

Silverbirchleaf · 13/08/2026 16:27

I’ve never done a resort holiday to this day. I go on holiday to explore.

This is exactly how me and ds holiday too.

i find it the perfect balance.

itsgettingweird · 13/08/2026 16:28

But yes I agree about going on your own - sounds bliss!

Lykia · 13/08/2026 16:31

DH and youngest stay around the hotel you and oldest do excursions.

Or how about you all chill around the pool in the morning and go out and about in the afternoon. That’s what we do as I too like to see some of the country I’m visiting and too much time at the hotel drives me a bit stir crazy. I’m also happy to wander out and about on my own on holiday.

Cookiesunderthesofa · 13/08/2026 16:31

all based on a week holiday

Beach / resort holiday abroad - 1 or 2 trips - maybe a boat trip or a bit of historical visit to a town . Most of time just chilling and reading and in the sea or pool.

city holiday - packing in as many trips to galleries and museums and monuments and churches as I can - so non stop . Exhausting but see so much.

uk holiday - nice cottage - mooch to local town or village and maybe a couple of attractions like a castle or museum etc. lots of bbq’s and walking.

ApplePieCinamon · 13/08/2026 16:45

I’m with your dh. It’s blazing hot, why would you want to be travelling around just to say you experienced some ‘culture’. Surely the novelty is the pool?
Lucky both dh and I have zero interest in doing that unless there’s a must see attraction.

Same. Especially with a 3yo!

PinkNailPolish2026 · 13/08/2026 16:46

It depends on the holiday, somewhere like Thailand/Malaysia etc we explore most days in the mornings, go back to the villa and spend time in the pool/reading etc from around 1/2ish then out again at night. If I’m flying long haul I’m making the most of seeing wherever I’m going.

City breaks we cram as much in as we can because we love exploring.

5* adult only all inclusive beach resorts we go out maybe 6 days over 14 days in the mornings then back for the pool/beach/cocktails/food, if there’s somewhere we want to see we do full days occasionally. We normally do a couple of meals out at night too.

I don’t think I could cope with staying in a resort for the full holiday.

HollyhockDays · 13/08/2026 16:55

We do loads. We do city breaks where it is just constant sightseeing. We’ve just done a cruise and it was all go with a few sea days.

I’d love a villa holiday either a pool and a book but DH hates that…

PeonyBulb · 13/08/2026 16:59

If you really want to go and the excursion will be interesting then take your older DC it’ll be fun bu not if you’re sweating for hours on a boat. Depends on the length of the boat ride and where it’s actually going. Some boat excursions are great some really aren’t worth it.

I’m really not that desperate to go it’s more of a we ‘should’ do some memorable, cultural stuff and see a bit of the country but it’s blazing hot and the kids are happy by the pool it just gets a bit samey.
