BBC and a U in French. Served me right, I had insisted against all advice on switching from Sociology to French half way through the first year of A Levels, because our Sociology teacher was either absent, late or distracted. Then I thought merely having a French pen friend would get me through Hmm. The arrogance of youth! I got to study English pre student loans though, so I guess I’m lucky!

2.2

Desmond Tutu x

Oh ok.
(I don't really know what 2.2 actually means. I know it's the way university degrees are given but is it good or bad?)

GreyCarpet · 13/08/2026 17:15

ABD. Was capable of higher but family shit, abuse and the fact my mum didn't think girls should be educated because it would put men off so even doing GCSEs had been a bit of a battle.

Went on to get a first class degree and a masters 👍🏻

OneInEight · 13/08/2026 17:15

Five A's! All downhill from then though. And we will ignore that one of them was General Studies which was not really a proper one. In our family there is an inverse relationship between grades at A level and salary so at the end of the day there is a lot more to life than good or bad grades. Still proud of my A's though.

It's like getting a C.

A first would be an A; a 2:1 would be like a B; a 2:2 a C; and a third a D

NimbleHiker · 13/08/2026 17:18

I got c in law, b in government and politics and a in sociology. I did fail an AS in english lit but it did give me the kick up the backside that i needed. I was a people pleaser and i only studied english lit to please my mum. When i failed my english lit AS my dm was extremely angry.

Thanks.
I have always wondered how university grading worked.

Quartzfairy · 13/08/2026 17:21

ABB - English, History and Sociology.

We all went to the pub after picking up our results and my friend was sick in my Dads car after driving pints of cider and black 🤣

❤️

Same re trauma, I do think i was worth 3 As

But youve still done really well - j'adore la langue française

Thanks. ❤️ I feel you did slightly better lol

AAC geography, maths, physics and a B in general studies (what was the point of that??) before the days of Astar

We were forced to take General Studies and had no classes to prepare for the exams. It strongly favoured the maths/science/language students who all did far better than those of us who took arts courses. Not that I’m still bitter about it or anything…

Stinkybooks · 13/08/2026 17:24

hotmumshit · 13/08/2026 16:19

😄😄😄 I do as I always feel sad I didnt achieve the As

For sociology i was the best in class! But I missed one class where the main topic was covered and fucked up the exam 💔

If you think “feeling sad” is worthy of a trigger warning I don’t think you truly understand the reasons for a trigger warning.
And your using it as you have is negating the value of a genuine reason to use the phrase. It’s not a bit of a joke, ha ha smiley faces.

I have always wondered how university grading worked.

More employers nowadays (including at least two of the Big Four, many very well respected international law firms, a lot of the insurance, banking, and pensions industry, the civil service, and all kinds of employers between and beyond) now use contextual grading, anyway - no longer sole focus on your degree grade, more rigorous insight into who a candidate is and what challenges they might have faced in life and education which meant they didn’t get the ‘A’ but are bright and clever and persevering.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 13/08/2026 17:26

B- Biology
C -Sociology
C -English Language
E -General studies . This was 1990, no A stars then. Went on to do my nurse training where no one else in my class of 30 had a single A level, then a health related degree in 1996 and got a first. So redeemed myself somewhat!

peachie82 · 13/08/2026 17:28

A - English Lit
B - Geography
B - Design Tech
C - Ancient History

NewYearEveryYear · 13/08/2026 17:29

I’m a great advocate that for most people, A Levels don’t actually matter. Of course it’s good to do well, especially if you have specific career aims like medicine or engineering. But it’s not the end of the world.

I got DEE.

I worked for a year, got into university based on work experience, got a 1st.

I am now in a senior leadership position - very comfortable lifestyle.

I was gutted by my A Level results (esp after 9x A and A* at GCSE).

IckyTecky · 13/08/2026 17:29

A-Biology
A-Chemistry
A-Maths
A-General Studies
A-Further Maths

Went to the wrong university, did the wrong course but it all worked out in the end. I would skip university these days.

Same! We had a couple of lessons on random subjects that I think were meant to fill the gap in our a levels (I remember doing French!) but it was such pot luck as to what questions you got on the day it seemed like one year you could get an A and the next year you might fail it completely!

EmmaStone · 13/08/2026 17:31

1993 (before A stars)
A - English Lit
A - Economics
C - French.

After a disastrous 2 weeks in France in the summer between Lower and Upper Sixth, I fell out of love with French and stopped trying so hard. Had been predicted a fail in Economics so the A was a real FU to the teacher (who I suspect told me I'd fail to give me a kick up the backside)!

My University wanted BBB, and kept me hanging on for nearly a week before they eventually accepted me.

Papyrophile · 13/08/2026 17:31

A, and Merit in S level in English; A in History and D in French, 1974. It was the last year before Oxbridge colleges went co-ed, so I refused to apply and went to Bristol, mainly because I knew and liked the city.

IckyTecky · 13/08/2026 17:32

What year did A* come in for A levels? We had them for GCSEs but not A levels (1998)

borborygmus1 · 13/08/2026 17:39

Would be A*AAAB in today's money in the 3 sciences and maths for A2.

The B was in general studies. I had an instrumental lesson during the class and they gave me the wrong paper to prepare for the exam. Still annoyed about that 21 years later!

Agree, although in today's currency @Needmorelego although would say that 2.2 today isnt considered good, as most people get a 2.1 or 1st.

Oh ffs

As someone who has real ptsd and a bloody good reason for having it, I just wish people would lighten up a little

Its a joke about how stressful the process is and its lifelong impact

Its not meant to diminish the experience of soldiers or abuse survivors and the like!

IckyTecky · 13/08/2026 17:43

I would say when I was at university it would be

First - A*
2:1 - A
2:2 - B
3rd - C

I think less than 10% got firsts in my subject even though pretty much everyone on the course would have had at least 2As at A level

TokyoSushi · 13/08/2026 17:44

DEE, I made no effort and did no work, I was more interested in drinking, and boys, and having a jolly old time.

I’m now COO of 2 small, but successful companies, I could have gone about things in an easier way and got here a lot sooner if only I could have been bothered!
