I got grade "N".
Which apparently is better than a complete fail (grade U) but not a pass.
I assume it stands for "Nearly But Not Quite" 😂
I had no plans to go to uni.
I only stayed on a school because I didn't want to leave. I wasn't cut out for A-Levels and really shouldn't have done them.

IdaGlossop · 13/08/2026 16:09

ABB English literature, French, history, plus an S level grade 1 in English literature and a fail in creative writing supplementary paper. In 1979, there were very few As so I was over the moon. No predicted grades then. A friend from England phoned me with the results as I was being a holiday cook and sand sweeper in France. I told the family's adorable five-year old, who said 'Does that mean you can stay?' I said that it meant the reverse, and that I had to leave, to go to university.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 13/08/2026 16:11

A* A A

My overachieving perfectionist teen-self was furious 😂. It was the first year A*s were available at A level (which just split the existing A grade, rather than shifting boundaries down) so if I’d done them a year earlier it would have been three top grades, and that thoroughly annoyed me.

Boomer55 · 13/08/2026 16:12

Did we need a TW for exam results? 🤷‍♀️

44PumpLane · 13/08/2026 16:12

BBBC biology, chemistry, physics and maths

I was predicted AAAA but did no work.....one of life's regrets

Still got into Edinburgh Uni, got a post grad qualification and am a decently senior finance manager (I'm actually more senior than I would like to be)

So kids- honestly don't worry- it's not the be all and end all!

IsItShining · 13/08/2026 16:13

Um. Five As. No A star available, back in the dark ages.

My SiL also had five, though, so I've had to annoy her by going back to night school and acquiring another one. Sorry Liz.

Victorius19 · 13/08/2026 16:15

B in History
E in French language/literature combined
E in English

I had expected 3 F's so opening that envelope was like winning the lottery. My poor friend though who needed 3 C's for university failed two of hers and her parents were horrible about it. I was so taken up comforting her that I didn't really ever celebrate mine, and my parents certainly weren't interested Hmm

chasetheace99 · 13/08/2026 16:15

BBC - maths, physics and chemistry (no A*s then)

Did you like history?

Waitingfordoggo · 13/08/2026 16:17

I got a C in Psychology and a C in English Language.

French was too hard so I stopped after Year 12 and got an E for the AS Level. So because I had a gap in my timetable, I had to pick up another AS level in Year 13. I chose General Studies (!) and got a B.

Same here I regret not doing the work - was capable of the As

But it worked out in the end!

AAAA Biology, Chemistry, Physics and General Studies. No A stars in those days but I did do 2 Special papers and got a 1 for Chemistry and a 2 for Biology which still galls me a bit as I much preferred Biology to Chemistry and I think I was better at it.

I still remember my best mades grades were DUDE in that order, he put his certificate in a frame when it arrived.

DramaAlpaca · 13/08/2026 16:19

I got ABBC in 1982. I was delighted, as it meant I met my offer of BBC and could go to university, but I remember being slightly disappointed with the C which is a bit daft looking back. I was the first in both sides of the family to go to university, so it was really exciting. Incidentally, the same course now asks for AAB thanks to grade inflation.

2 Ns and a U.....ooops....there went my chances of studying Russian at Essex or Russian and Drama at Wolverhampton. Might have helped if I'd actually gone to lessons/ done some work.
Its not all bad though.... did BTEC a few years later, then a degree, got into a career I love that is totally unrelated and have done several Postgrad courses, Professional Development courses and an MA.

3 x A. But then caved under last finals pressure and got 2.2 which still bothers me. You win some you lose some hey.

Love this! I have a friend whose brother's A levels spelled NUN and I always thought N was shitty! Like, you nearly scraped an E grade...

I dropped out of my A levels in the lower sixth having decided school wasn't for me - but later went as a mature student and did a degree. I was far better suited to education at a later age!

It gave me a good giggle.
