£610 a week pension demand is insane

Just read that there is an online petition doing the rounds for a £610 a WEEK pension demand to the government.
WTAF? Is the heat melting some peoples brains? It seems over 5000 have signed it.
Where do they think the money is coming from?

Btw my son has been offered a mortgage. He's thinking of moving. Same deal we had when we were 23. Three times the first, one times the second. Not 8 or 10 years 😱

Double digit interest rates were late 80s and early 90s a period of approximately 8 years.

They were only over 15% for around 10 months in 1990.

With MIRAS tax relief, even 15% was actually more like 11/12% because of the tax relief on the interest.

It was far longer than that. According to this graph some people paid double digit interest for the majority of their mortgage term.

Mortgage misery set to be as bad as 1980s — with interest rates heading for 5.75%

Mortgage rates are quickly approaching 6 per cent - with experts saying this is equivalent to double digit rates seen in the 1980s

Well more than a quarter of over 65s live in a household with assets valued in excess of £1m. So if you have more than a handful of pensioners, your are either a statistical anomaly or a chunk of your acquaintances are understating their wealth

Assets. The key word.
Not cash rich.

Whilst I’m not saying they don’t exist, this is something I only know from the media as I do not currently know a single poor pensioner. They all seem to living the exact life they want as far as I can tell. And I know the whole range id say from my grandma on benefits through to my friend who lives in a 3 million house and goes on holiday whenever she fancies.

I agree. And im a pensioner. I hate to hear some of them pleading poverty.

There's obviously some exceptions. But all the ones I know are very comfortable and able to help their kids out financially.

All the ones I know aren’t able to. See we can all do that. It’s meaningless.

However, do you think people who have paid tax and NI for 40+ years should all be living in penury?

Not at all. I just don't know any who do. Those that are on the bread line deserve some support. But there's a difference between penury and £610 a week.

MyLeftArmpit · 13/08/2026 17:56

There’s a bloke on our local FB group who posts about this almost every day. People are always reporting him to the moderators and telling him to shut up but he never stops. It might sound harsh but if you’d read his posts you would know why.

The government pension is not the only one you’re supposed to have. If you plan well, you should be able to live well after you retire.

£610 a week is ridiculous.
……. clearly these people haven’t planned well.

I agree but in this thread and another one on the go it’s apparently ok if pensioners get £200 per week and that shouldn’t even need that!

But the current pension is about £250 per week.

I couldn’t live on that and I have no mortgage.

Well it’s the only one a lot of current retirees have, particularly women. So what you’re “supposed to have” is a bit of an irrelevance.

Why couldn't you manage with a 4 weekly payment of £1000 if you have no mortgage?

Cactus09 · 13/08/2026 18:14

I'd love to retire at 60. I'd happily accept a pension at 35 hours of the Living Wage. That's exactly what I earn now working in uni admin. I'd love to give my job up to a young person. I feel like a job-blocker.
Take some young (graduate?) off universal credit and let me retire. Win win.

Maybe some of them didn't plan to have a disabled child eg? Or get ill themselves. Or have to give up work to look after an unwell partner or parent. Or get made redundant.

Remiss of them really.

I'm more concerned about a generation of young people who appear to be sociopaths.

I couldn’t. Council tax is £350, utilities £200, water £70, so £380 a month for everything else. No wonder my friend who’s reliant on it thinks several times before she has a coffee away from home.

Who gets their pension at 60?

In April 2010, the equalisation process to 65 started for women

That was me roughly before I retired. I downsized to a house which is much more affordable.

I have never met a rich pensioner. I know loads on pension credit though…

They are all on 3 or more cruises/holidays a year and in Booths/M&S/Waitrose.

Chezron24 · 13/08/2026 18:32

I retired last year, I received £977.08 every 4 weeks. My husband works, so I can't claim pension credit.
How do you (and the government) expect us to live on that?
I rent my house btw.
The things I'm reading on here are disgusting 🫣

They would off load your work to your colleagues rather than advertise the job

Not do. We've done all the restructuring and redundancies last year. Newly vacant posts are being filled.

I don't know. But direct debits would be about £800, so I would have 50 quid a week left for food etc. Lucky me.

I don't have to though but people do.

Then you’re lucky, I know lots of poor pensioners. Could you live on £965 per month?
you wait until you’re older, it’s ridiculous all this whinging by younger people about pensions. We didn’t stay in education until we were mid 20’s. I was working from 16, I’ve worked all my life and EARNED my pension by paying into the system for decades. I happily paid for the generation above me to have a pension, on the understanding that pension would be there for me. Now all you young people think you have no responsibility to do the same. Shame on you all!
