To remember that it didn’t really get dark in the 1999 eclipse?

I was 14, in South Wales. If you look at the news coverage and videos recorded in 1999 it seems to get as dark as night. But I don’t remember that at all - the sky was still blue, it just went dim, like it would in heavy rain or as if it was 6pm instead of 11am.

Is this how other people remember it?

Well I was in Cheshire, so a bit further South than Manchester, and I definitely don't remember it getting all that dark, not really.

What I do remember is that we all trooped out from the office in to the car park opposite to watch and I noticed somebody in really weird garb. They were wearing a black cape and a silvery thing on their head. At first I thought it must be somebody in to New-Agey bollocks or a sun-worshipper or something. I eventually realised they had come out of the hairdressers next door and were presumably mid-perm!

😂

It was weirdly eerie near me

Herefordshire (so probably not that far from you) and would agree with that.

Because the experiences are completely incomparable and a lot of people don't understand this.

Partial eclipses make barely any difference to the visual experience even if they go up to a high % coverage.

Many people might see the 90% eclipse here and from the media hype believe that a total eclipse is just not worth seeing because they have seen one that is 90% and that was meh. In my opinion that is absolutely not the case.

I would also strongly point out the dramatic difference between totality and partial to encourage people who are able to go that extra mile to try to get to a place where they can view totality, because the quality of experience is hugely improved.

Entirely agree. Total eclipse is a phenomenal experience. Partial is a mere shadow by comparison.

I was in Northern Ireland so it didn't do much but I seem to remember it was in a Eastenders episode or did I imagine that?

It was. Ian Beale proposed to Mel I think

Peachy2005 · 12/08/2026 19:24

It didn’t get dark just now either, just briefly dimmer.

TellingBone · 12/08/2026 19:30

I put a lamp on for five minutes. 2/10

Disturbia81 · 12/08/2026 19:40

In Yorkshire, very disappointed as it just slightly dimmed

Hakunatomato · 12/08/2026 19:44

London. I thought it was going to be as dark as 1999 ☹️

I was in Devon and for a couple minutes it was totally black. It felt spooky.

Waitingfordoggo · 12/08/2026 19:51

I’m in the South East. It definitely got darker but not dark. Was a bit like dusk I suppose.

I couldn’t recall the London one though I did watch it. I’m sure it did get darker. All our office went outside to watch it.

MsLllama · 12/08/2026 20:08

In the south east it was very cloudy, got windy, dark& eerie feeling, dogs not impressed& fish jumping in the pond.

Violet76 · 12/08/2026 20:10

North West - I remember it being like dusk rather than dark with a rapid drop in temperature.

Rollercoaster1920 · 12/08/2026 22:54

Tonight I think the birds weren't fooled. They stayed in their nests, no second dawn chorus for me. Perhaps because the eclipse was so close to dusk anyway.

JaceLancs · 12/08/2026 23:04

In 1999 I was in Brighton - it went very quiet - the birds stopped singing - but it didn’t go as dark as I expected or last.as long
I didn’t know what to expect but was disappointed
Tonight was even less impressive

1999 was amazing in my experience. We went to France, and drove right into the perfect spot (I was 18, my dad did the planning) and watched as the band of darkness came over. Pitch black, silence, then the light came back and the birds started singing.

This evening was fun, took the kids out on the boat, they enjoyed the experience, but it was very different. It did get notably darker and cooler etc.

montysmaw · 12/08/2026 23:47

I was in Scotland for the 1999 one and I remember that it looked total, that is the sun was obscured. But looking it up , apparently it was only 86%.

It wasnt totally dark but was a weird eerie twilight and it got cold. Like no light I have ever seen so it was dramatic.

Tonight's was seemingly 92%. Couldnt see the sun for clouds, but it barely got noticeably darker nor lighter afterwards. Nothing happened! The birds continued to do their thing. Defo not as dramatic as the 1999 which was seemingly less complete. Very odd

notimagain · 13/08/2026 05:55

Funnily enough there were a few comments here or on a related thread yesterday AM that some people were going to be disappointed.

I'm not quite sure why UK MSM seemed to be pushing the eclipse in the manner they did, unless some had shares in eclipse glasses makers.

Eclipses are highly predictable, from the UK it was never going to be as impressive as the 1999 was but the way some outlets were pushing things you'd think it was going to be.

Disturbia81 · 13/08/2026 07:36

Yep disappointing like this one was (Yorkshire)

BringBackCatsEyes · 13/08/2026 09:31

The few videos I have seen of people watching it in totality have been marred by screaming (in awe?). Part of its wonder is how silent the world around you becomes.

Anyway, I joined a few villagers with our various home made pinhole cameras and it was fun. I then went for a short run during the eclipse and it did get a bit cooler and felt like dusk was approaching even though the sun was still high.

Came home, DS (17) declared he didn't notice a thing and that "science isn't real". I am a scientist so he has been disowned!
