To remember that it didn’t really get dark in the 1999 eclipse?

I was 14, in South Wales. If you look at the news coverage and videos recorded in 1999 it seems to get as dark as night. But I don’t remember that at all - the sky was still blue, it just went dim, like it would in heavy rain or as if it was 6pm instead of 11am.

Is this how other people remember it?

We were on the edge the area of totality and it went quite dark grey but not like nighttime. Weirdly the temperature seemed to plummet too.

pinkfondu · 12/08/2026 13:52

Not touch black but defo very cold

HelenHywater · 12/08/2026 13:53

I was in central London and it just went a bit grey. I don't remember having either eclipse glasses or a pinhole device. We stood in Lincoln's Inn Fields.

Nighthop · 12/08/2026 13:58

I remember it being very disappointing! Light was just a bit dim.

Corgi2023 · 12/08/2026 13:59

I remember it went a bit grey for about 2 minutes and then that was it. I was out in the garden and was rather disappointed.
(In the North West).

I watched it on Dartmoor and seem to recall it being very dark. But I was 5 so who knows if my recollection is reliable.

It was dark (not quite night though) and eerie in West Sussex. I'd just started my first job and the boss took the entire office out to see it with pinhole cameras he'd made for each one of us.

I was 13 in the west of Ireland and remember being completely underwhelmed by the whole thing after all of the hype. It's very overcast here today so I don't have high expectations of this one either.

godmum56 · 12/08/2026 14:09

no vote. I was on the IOW and remember it wasn't that dark but we weren't in the totality area.

It was pitch black for me in the south west.

I was in north Dorset, not hugely impressive. I was a 3rd year student nurse, we took a load of patients from the cottage hospital outside for it, we lost one of them, took ages to find him, he was in the park nearby on the swings. Happy memories.

Travelled down to Cornwall for it in 99 - on the beach in the totality, it got very dark.
Was an eerie experience, the birds stopped singing and the dogs started barking.
Unforgettable.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/08/2026 14:15

I was in the totality zone and it didn’t get dark until it was 99%. If you were outside the zone, that would be why.

daisychain01 · 12/08/2026 14:18

Here was one in 2015 which proves it does get quite dark. I pointed my iPad at the sun, without looking at the screen or the sun, by the way.

We were in Cornwall on a cliff. Probably not the best idea but guess where we are going tonight! 😂

Stopandlook · 12/08/2026 14:22

I’ve been lucky enough to see a total eclipse in N America 2 years ago. 4 minutes of totality with clear skies. It’s not going to get dark here but I’ll still get my colander out 😂

Purplesuns · 12/08/2026 14:22

I drove down to Devon in 1999 to watch it. I remember being underwhelmed, it didn't go dark, just went like twilight, the birds stopped singing and the street lights came on, that's it! My husband thinks I'm a misery because I said I wasn't bothered about watching this one!

Leapintothelightning · 12/08/2026 14:22

I’m in Scotland and I remember (as best I can, I think… I was 7) that it was around lunchtime and the sky was blue and just went a bit dull… kind of like when the sun goes behind a really big cloud! I don’t remember it getting dark at all

Igmum · 12/08/2026 14:22

I was on a walking holiday in the Lake District. It was quite moving because a group of complete strangers just sat in an open part of the woods and waited for it. But yes, a bit dusky, not too impressive.

Willowskyblue · 12/08/2026 14:24

I was on Guernsey and remember the wave of darkness coming towards us. It was incredible.
Am in south Wales today so am glad it’s such a beautiful day for an eclipse!

ListenToAlfDubs · 12/08/2026 14:24

I was in London and it was underwhelming. More like a very grey day than night.

Dr13Hadley · 12/08/2026 14:24

I was in the north west (England) aged 17 and remember it going dim, cold and weirdly quiet! I think the birds all stopped singing or something but it felt eerie.

Stopandlook · 12/08/2026 14:24

I also drove to Cornwall in 99. Was disappointed by the cloud cover but it was still very cool. I was tempted to go to Spain this year (there’s another total eclipse in Spain next year too!)
If money was no object I’d be a proper eclipse chaser…

Same. I was in a very high open space and remember it was a bit of an anticlimax. It felt like a brief dusk, rather than nighttime darkness. And it seemed a bit like an average New Year anticlimax - a lot of fuss and anticipation, and then incredible logistical difficulty when everyone wants to get home across town at the same time!

TellingBone · 12/08/2026 14:32

Yorkshire. It was cloudy anyway but got slightly dimmer for a bit. 2/10

Dilemma999 · 12/08/2026 14:33

We were all allowed to leave work and head to Greenwich park. Everything went very still - it was quite eerie. It was like twilight.
